    1. [GERMANNA] DNA answer
    2. Would I have any Willhoite Blood that could be tested? Can several tests be made from one test? Unfortunately NO. Start with yourself and work backwards up the female line ONLY. The results from your DNA would reflect the earliest female line that you have knowledge of. The only person that can test both paternal and maternal lines is a son for one generation only. He inherits his mother's Mitochrondial DNA but does not pass it along. BUT he can have both tests run from the same sample. I had my brother's test done for both my father and my mother's lines. The Maternal test does not connect you to other people like the paternal line does (y-DNA). One reason is that it is not surnamed based. I hope this helps. Marilyn

There are special prices there also for ordering through a project. There are other DNA sites to look at also that have special deals. John

    2. Corlee Morris
    3. Cousins, I followed the link to the 1/2 DNA Tests. Are you sure that the testing company is Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)? FTDNA does not offer a 33 Marker Y Chromosome Test Kit nor a 46 Marker Y Chromosome Test Kit. I am the Group Administrator for the Morris Surname DNA Project through FTDNA. As a member of the group FTDNA offers a 12 Marker Y-Chromosome Test Kit for $99 and a 37 Marker Y Chromosome Test Kit for $189. So the 1/2 Test Kits seem to be a bargin. But I could not find out who the testing company is. I searched Ancestry and I Googled without results. In answer to the question about the ability to have additional tests performed on the original Test Kit, yes if you are with FTDNA. That is why I recommend to people to have their relatives tested while they are still alive. New and improved testing is being invented all of the time. Corlee Morris San Diego, California A Yeager

    2. Someone who know more about DNA could help you with this. My knowledge is limited. I did have mtDNA on myself but that is our mother's mother and so on, for several generations. I cannot tell that helped me at all. I think you would get the best result's on the Ydna on the Wilhite men in your family. One thing I have found interesting is the Ydna doesn't go any further back than my paper trail on my different surnames. I have Wilhite cousin's but I don't think they have done DNA. I didn't do all of my DNA with FTDNA. I did my DNA tracks with another company and that helped me to know where we lived and what our nationalities are. I am a great mixture and lots of German. 2. Sorry Marilyn, See if these are better instructions for books.google.com 1) Go to "advance search" 2) Click for "100 Results" (sorry not searches) 3) In the box "with the exact phrase" TRY Knowlton Genealogy - it should automatically put " " around your phrase or name you want to search 4) Below the bluish gray box where it says "Search:" Mark the FULL VIEW ONLY button/circle. This will pull up complete books that you can download. If this is not marked your return will include full books, partials and just snippets of books. By doing the above I had a return of (11) books with one interesting written in 1897 on the Knowlton Association titled "Prospectus and Year Book Containing the History, Constitution, By-Laws, List of Officers and Members of the Knowlton Association of America..." The Germanna Foundation is in the process of establishing a certificate program of First Families of Fauquier to document the earliest familiies and to raise funds for programs related to the 250th Anniversary of Fauquier County next year.  We anticipate receiving a manuscript on the Germantown settlement (now in Faquier County, this is where the 1st Colony removed to in 1719-1720) from Don Tharpe in December 2008, which will be published as Germanna Record 19 to coincide with many celebrations and observances in Fauquier County in 2009.  Volunteers for this project would be welcome!  --- On Mon, 7/28/08, Gailsline@aol.com <Gailsline@aol.com> wrote: From: Gailsline@aol.com <Gailsline@aol.com> Subject: Re: [GERMANNA] Fauquier County 250th Anniversary, First Families of Fauquier To: germanna_colonies@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, July 28, 2008, 7:07 PM I haven't really been keeping up but I think there might be a society for those who were the first settlers in Fauquier. 3. Jennie, This is a follow-up on my earlier message, asking for help on the Google book site. I've found that if I put a full name, IN PARENTHESES, in the box that says "with all the words," then I can actually come up with some good hits. For example, I put "Jacob Coons" in the search, and came up with some interesting books. The downside is that I found some very enticing "clips," but not access to the books. In my quest to find out why, at the "Google Book Search Help Center" I found the answer to the copyright question: "Why can't I read the entire book? "Many of the books in Google Book Search come from authors and publishers who participate in our Partner Program. For these books, our partners decide how much of the book is browsable -- anywhere from a few sample pages to the whole book. "For books that enter Book Search through the Library Project, what you see depends on the book's copyright status. We respect copyright law and the tremendous creative effort authors put into their work. If the book is in the public domain and therefore out of copyright, you can page through the entire book and even download it and read it offline. But if the book is under copyright, and the publisher or author is not part of the Partner Program, we only show basic information about the book, similar to a card catalog, and, in some cases, a few snippets -- sentences of your search terms in context. The aim of Google Book Search is to help you discover books and learn where to buy or borrow them, not read them online from start to finish. It's like going to a bookstore and browsing - with a Google twist." So, the bottom line seems to be: If the book is available on the site, then there's no copyright. So ENJOY! I don't think they are. They were printed in 1914, 1926 and 1929 and far as I can tell out of print and no longer available for purchase unless you luck up finding a very old copy. The 1914 volume is available in many libraries but not for checking out of the library. I bought two of my CD copies several years ago (2003 & 2004) from a printing company that scanned old books onto CD. The other one (1929) I downloaded picture page by page and then scanned them into a PDF file for myself and some other researchers. I then just recently downloaded the 1914 volume due to the pictures were much better in the digitized PDF that I found online for FREE. I have always felt funny selling CDs to others especially when I like to share any info that might help others in their research and I don't like making money off others who are trying to research their families without spending a fortune doing it. So, I just charge the fee of mailing and I can mail any way the person would like. I recently mailed a CD to Australia. My new best website friend for downloading full books for free in PDF format is at books.google.com There is a trick though...Go into "Advanced Search". Mark "100 Searches". Enter a "Name" and any other clue, like an author name. Mark "Full book". You will be shocked as to how many books are out their that mention the Fishback family. There is one book that I found on Abraham Lincoln where he writes to his old lawyer William M. Fishback (Gov. of Arkansas). I have found books on almost all my family lines that I am researching (even one called "Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia" Published 1900) They are big files, big books, so be prepared. I keep flash drives (256MB, 1GB and 2GB) with me at all times. When I am not busy at work, my bosses allow me to do my family research (I think they get as excited as I do when I find that missing fella or gal that I have been looking for), so when I find something I can download it onto my stick and transfer it to my home computer or a CD later. Another thing I have done is if I see a book on ancestry or some other site I then immediately go and check to see if I can download it from books.google.com for FREE!! (I just looked at books.google.com and they do write on that the 1914 book copyright has expire) Anyway, send me your address to _JensTwigs@aol.com_ (mailto:JensTwigs@aol.com) and I will be happy to get a cd out to you ASAP if you would like one. If not, I would love to have a PDF file for all of them. This would be great to add to the website for the 1st and 2nd Germanna Colonies (unofficial), on a separate page, listed in the Index on the Home Page. The reason I mention copyright is that if such has been renewed, we couldn't copy the data and put on the website; however, if there is no copyright, "fair game".
