    1. [GERMANNA] Tapp/Jett
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. Barb: I'm not so sure about your placement of this Stephen Jett. William Tapp Sr. had several children, two of whom were Vincent Tapp who married Mary Jett, daughter of John Jett (d. 1771), and daughter Sarah Tapp who m. John Jett. The John Jett who died in 1771 also had a son Stephen Jett. So these three Jett's are contemporaries. That is, Stephen Jett is NOT a son of John Jett and Sarah Tapp Jett. In other words, siblings Vincent and Sarah Tapp married siblings John and Mary Jett. I am not sure, but the John Jett who died in Culpeper in 1808 may be the John Jett who married Sarah Tapp. His will also names a son Stephen Jett, to whom 1 shilling, suggesting he may be the Stephen Jett who married a daughter of Joseph Bach, Sr. and moved to North Carolina (not Kentucky). This will also names sons William, John, Joseph and Nimrod Jett (Vincent and Mary Jett Tapp also had a son Nimrod), and daughters Ann Churchman, Elizabeth Canady, Sarah Hopper (wife of John Hopper, m. 1785), and Abigail Arnold. There is a Tapp family genealogy book at the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library in Lancaster, VA that I intend to look up today. Perhaps it will throw more light on the Tapps of Culpeper. 1. [GERMANNA] Zebulon Smith 1758-1840 of Sullivan, TN or VA?
    2. Wetannah Cates
    3. Learned listers, I need help ... Researching Zebulon Smith 1758-1840 of Sullivan or Washington, Tennessee I Found the following information in a book titled "Some Tennessee Heroes of the Revolution, compiled from Pension Statements by Zella Armstrong five parts on one volume Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc Baltimore 1975 pp 114-115 Zebulon Smith applied for revolutionary pension while residing in Sullivan County, Sept. 24, 1832, when he was "aged seventy-four past". The date and place of his birth and the names of his parents are not given in his pension application. He enlisted while a resident of Sullivan County, THEN VIRGINIA and served as a private to VA and N.C. troops. In the fall of 1778 he was three months in Captain Wallace's company in Colonel Isaac Shelby's regiment; in the fall of 1778 he was three months in Captain Jonathan Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; in the spring of 1780 he was three months in Captain William Asher's company and was a substitute for Solomon Smith (no relationship indicated); in the fall of 1780 he was three months again in Captain Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; in the fall of 1781 he was three months in Captain Wallace's or Captain Topp's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; immediately afterward he enrolled and served one year in Captain McKelvey's company on Colonel Moore's regiment; from the fall of 1782 he served three months in Captain John Scott's company in John Sevier's regiment. question , where it states he enlisted in "Sullivan County, then in Virginia, " above, I am questioning if this means Sullivan County, Tennessee was actually at that time, Sullivan County Virginia ? I know that Sullivan County TN. was formed from Washington County, TN. My family tree left to me states he was born 1758, in either Sullivan or Washington County, Tennessee, and died about 1840 in Sullivan County, TN. I am wondering if this was actually a part of Virginia or North Carolina, at that time? another source I found US and International marriage records 1560-1900 lists Zebulon Smith (b. 1759 in TN) married Sarah Dungan (b. 1760 TN) 1783 in Tennessee. Sarah Dungan was d/o Jeremiah D Dungan 1731 Bucks PA - 1813 Watauga, Washington, TN. and Rebecca Hendry b. 1735 Frederick, VA no DOD known, Rebecca was a d/o George Hendry and Deborah Borden. Zebulon and Sarah Dungan Smith had 5 known children Samuel Smith 1783-1882, Rachel Smith, 1785-1885 married Thomas Smalling, Solomon Smith 1787-1887, Ruth Smith 1785-1885 married a George Smith, and my ancestor Jeremiah Dungan Smith 1788 native of Washington Co, TN -1846 Hensley twp. Johnson Co, Indiana. In 1814 Jermiah D Smith married Elizabeth Arrants b. 1789 Piney Flats, Sullivan TN d. 1863 Johnson Co, Indiana. Elizabeth Arrants was a d/o Harman Arrants and Francina Price. All records I have found of Jeremiah Dungan Smith and Elizabeth Arrants Smith issues, state Jeremiah Dungan Smith was of English descent, and were natives of Wadhington Co, Tennesee. His son William Harrison Smith married Margaret Foster, dtr of Richard Foster and Lucinda Coons. The Coons family goes back to the Germanna's Joseph Coons of the Little Fork Group. Can anyone possibly tell me more of these Smith families, or their allies of marriages? Does anyone have any idea whom the parents of my Zebulon Smith may have been? Thank you for any help.

    3. Barb: One problem with this. Actually two. Mary Bach wife of Moses Bach could not have been born in 1777. She was married to Moses Tapp by 1786. My correspondent on this topic tells me another Bach researcher has this (your) Mary Bach (b. 1777) moving to Kentucky and never married. That doesn't make it all true, though. Still, I think this is the right avenue to explore, and can't thank you enough for this information. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Mary Fishback, m. Moses Tapp?
    2. There was a Fishback family and a Back family, so it's very possible that Moses's wife was a daughter of the Back family and not the Fishback family. There is a Mary Back that was born in 1777, the daughter of Henry Back and Elizabeth Huffman, the daughter of John Hoffman/Huffman (1714 Immigrant) and his second wife Maria Sabina Folg. She's the right age to be the wife of your Moses Tapp, but nothing further is known about her according to BC Holtzclaw in the Bach/Back section of Ancestry and Descendants. Also of interest is that Joseph Back, the brother of the above Henry, has a tie to the Jett family, which BC notes on pg. 42: Joseph Back, son of Harman Back ".......On Aug. 20, 1786 the State of Virginia granted to Joseph Back and Stephen Jett, assignees of Joseph Back, 791 acres in Fayette Co., Ky., due to Joseph Back by a Treasury Warrant dated Aug. 16, 182, and surveyed Mar. 19, 1785. This land-grant indicates that there were two Joseph Backs, Joseph Sr. (to whom the warrant was issued) and Joseph, Jr. (to whom it was assigned along with Stephen Jett)." I'm not sure who Stephen Jett is, but the parents of Moses Tapp are Vincent Tapp and Mary Jett, she being the daughter of John Jett. Is Stephen Jett a son of John and Mary's brother??? Okay, I just figured out who Stephen Jett is, it does pay to read!!! Stephen Jett is the son of Sarah Tapp and her husband, John Jett. Sarah Tapp is the daughter of William and Christian _______ Tapp and the brother of Vincent Tapp, your Moses's father. I think it significant of the ties to the Tapps to the Jetts to the Backs and I would bet that your Mary Back is just that, a Back descendant and not a Fishback descendant! 1. [GERMANNA] YAGER family in Rockingham Co., VA
    2. Larry and Jean
    3. Again this is from Ray Groves. He sent it to the list in PLAIN TEXT but it arrived as a blank message. I don't understand why this happened but here is his information. Jean ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To The Germanna Colonies Research The Yager Family in Rockingham County, Virginia! WILLIAM L. YAGER William L. Yager was born about 1852, in the Stonewall District, of Elkton, in Rockingham County, Virginia. His parents were Andrew 'Jackson' Hayes Yager, and Elizabeth Runkle. His father being born in Rockingham County, Va. in 1818. And his mother, being born at East Point, Virginia, on the, 22nd of December, 1820. Both came from families with very strong German values. They were married on the 13th of September 1838, in Rockingham County. Other than the birth of their five children, there is no more information on them. Even their dates and place of death are unknown at this time. On June 14, 1876, in Rockingham County, William L. Yager married Sarah 'Columbia' Price, born about 1856, in Fredericksville, Albermarle County. From what I have been able to find out about her, she did not like to be known as Sarah. To her family, she was always Columbia Price, and after her marriage, she was Columbia Yager. William and Columbia Yager had five children, all born in Rockingham County, Va. The oldest was their only son, Charles E. Yager, born on April 3rd, 1878. The next child was their first daughter, Carrie M. Yager, born in August of 1879. My grandmother was the next to be born, Barbara Elizabeth Yager, born on the 25th of May 1881. Like her mother, she did not want to be called Barbara, or Elizabeth, but wanted to be know as Lizzis, instead. The next daughter was Nina I. Yager, born in October 1887, and the last daughter was Alice G. Yager, born on July, 22nd, of 1892. William L. Yager, died in 1896, and is buried in the Elk Run Cemetery, in Rockingham County. His wife, Sarah "Columbia" Yager, is also buried at Elk Run, having passed away in 1911. The children of William L. and Columbia YAGER all lived in Rockingham, or other counties, in Virginia. With the exception of Carrie M. Yager, there are no records past nine months for her. Charles E. Yager, died on October 21st, 1936, and is buried beside his parents at Elk Run. My grandmother married David Isaac "Marcellus" GROVE, born in Marksville, Page County, Virginia. More on her and her family in the next e-mail. Her sister, Nina Irene YAGER, married Virgil S. DAVIS, born on the 26th of February 1887, in Rockingham County, on March 1st, 1913. They have two children, Robert Virgil DAVIS, born in 1916, in Elkton, Rockingham Co., Va. And Sarah Katherine DAVIS, born on the 26th of May 1924, in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. Nina Yager Davis died in 1967 in Harrisonburg Va. Her husband Virgil, died on January 9th, 1978, in Bedford City, Va. The last sister, Alice G. Yager, married Walter Franklin BRUCE, born the 20th of December 1894, in Rockingham, on October 7th, 1915, in Rockingham. Alice died on the 3rd of September in 1974. And her husband Walter died two month later, on the 26th of November 1974. They had one two sons, Richard Wallace BRUCE, born the 24th of April in 1917, in Elkton. He died on the 3rd of May 1999, in Luray, Page County Va. And Owen W. BRUCE, I am still looking for information on his. But I do know that Alice and her husband Walter, along with their two sons, are buried in Elk Run Cemetery, near her parents. Ray Groves Grandson of Barbara Elizabeth "Yager" Grove

    3. Hello all, I've run into a research problem and hoping one of you Fishback researchers can help me out. I'm researching a Moses Tapp, b. ca 1767 in Culpeper, and moved to Spartanburg County, SC in 1804. He was the son of Vincent Tapp (d. 1791) and Mary Jett. His grandfather, William Tapp (also d. 1791) patented several tracts of land, most of which were adjacent to Frederick Fishback in 1755. A great-grandson, in an interview, revealed much family knowledge, albeit all from stories he had heard. He states that his great grandparents were Moses Tapp and Mary Bach. That part is true, with the exception of the last name for Mary, which is I am trying to establish. I've checked Hotsclaw's *Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750" and while he includes a small section on the Tapp family (mostly correct, some in error), and he does mention Moses Tapp and also that he went to Spartanburg County, NC, he is silent on the issue of his wife's name. So, Fishbach researchers, is there a Missing Mary in the line who married Moses Tapp? Moses Tapp moved to Spartanburg District, South Carolina in 1804. Much obliged, Craig Kilby

My grandmother was Barbara Elizabeth Yager, her father was William L. Yager. Her grandfather was Andrew Jackson Hayes Yager, all from Rockingham County, Virginia. Her name, as you know, was Nancy Seal, and they were married on 3rd of July, in 1794, in Madison. On your World Connect page, you have information on both of Philemon Yager's marriages. But you only show the children of his second marriage, to Susanna Snider! I know that this is nothing more than an oversight, and nothing more. But for you site, to be completely honest! There were three children of this marriage, two sons and one daughter. The first son was Berry Yager, born in 1803. As you know, Berry was Philemon's mother's maiden name. The second was their daughter, Melinda Yager, born in 1804. The third was the second son. His name was Milton Yager, and he was born in 1806. I know that this is odd because of the birth of his first son, of his second marriage, was also in 1806. I could not find any kind of information on the two boys. They may have died at an early age, and Milton may have died at birth. But there is quite a bit of information on Melinda! I hope that you will be able to update the Philemon Yager page soon. As for the information on my grandmother, and the rest of my Virginia Yager family, I will try to send that as soon as I can. Yours truly Ray Groves - Grandson of Barbara Elizabeth, great-grandson of Andrew Jackson Hayes, and great-great-grandson of Philemon YAGER, of Rockingham County, VA. ------------------------------------------------------------------ #2 - The YAGER Family in ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA Andrew 'Jackson' Hayes YAGER Born between 1815 and 1818, in Rockingham County, VA. His father, Philemon Yager, born between 1771 and 1774, in Madison County, VA. And his second wife, Susannah Snyder! She was born in 1789, in Culpeper County, VA. They were married on 31 July 1807, in Madison County, VA. Both died between 1840 and 1850, no records on their deaths have been found todate. Andrew 'Jackson' Hayes Yager, married Elizabeth Runkle on 13 Sep. 1838, in Rockingham County, VA. She was born on the 22nd of Dec. 1820, at East Point, Virginia. Her parents were Jacob Runkle, born in 1786, and died 29 Sep. 1851 in Elkton Rockingham, County, VA. Her mother was Elizabeth Fay, birthday unknown, date of death, 13 Feb. 1849, in Elton Rockingham County, VA. They were married on 27 Dec. 1810, in Rockingham County, VA. 'Jackson' Yager and Elizabeth Runkle had five children, between 1842 and 1854, in Rockingham County, VA. They were Lorenzo Franklin Yager, born on 22 Jun. 1842. He married Sarah Catherine Leap, born 25 Jan. 1848, in Rockingham, on 14 Jun. 1866. Sarah Elizabeth Yager was born about 1845, in Rockingham. She married the older brother of Sarah Catherine Leap, William Anderson Leap, born 14 Feb. 1845, on 18 Nov. 1866. Third child was Fannie J. Yager, born about 1848, in Rockingham. No information on her after the 1860 census. My great grandfather is the next, William L. Yager, born about 1852, also in Rockingham County. He married Sarah Columbia Price. More on them in the next e-mail. The last child was Mary J. Yager, born about 1854, as the others, born in Rockingham. No more information on her after the 1860 census. I am still looking for information, on Fannie, Mary and their mother. All three may have died in the Civil War, but I cannot say, one way or the other. Yours truly, Ray Groves - Great-great-grandson of 'Andrew Jackson' Hayes Yager and Elizabeth Runkle. ------------------------------------------------------------ #3 - Missing Family in Rockingham County, VA Good Day to all the GERMANNA COMMUNITY, I am asking for your help in locating missing family members in the early 1860's, in Rockingham County, VA. The family name is "YAGER", and in 1860, before the Civil War. There were five members in the family, according to the 1860 census. They were: Elizabeth "RUNKLE" Yager, born in Rockingham, in 1820, and her five children. The children were: Lorenzo Franklin Yager, born in 1842, he was the oldest. His two sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Yager, born in 1845, and Frances 'Fannie' J. Yager, born in 1844. The youngest brother is next, he was born about 1852. The youngest sister was Mary J. Yager, and she was born in 1854. The census does not show their father. His name was Andrew 'Jackson' Hayes Yager. In fact, there is every little information, if none at all, about him. The census does show the Yager family, living on a farm, next to the mother's sister, Mary Runkle, in Rockingham. After the war, the only records that I could find were for Lorenzo, Sarah Elizabeth, and William Yager. There was no information on the mother or the two other daughters, Frances 'Fannie' or Mary J. This way, I am asking for your help, if you had family in Virginia, and in Rockingham County, during the Civil War. Could you please look in any records, files or any other papers that you may have, for that time, and see if these three names are there, in any way! Thank you for any help that you may give in this search. Ray Groves

    1. Re: [GERMANNA] Any information on George Caspar WAYMAN (WEIDMAN)
    2. Michael, You will want to read all of the information that John B has written about The Little Fork group as well as BC Holtzclaw's article about the same group as your George Wayman was part of that colony. In fact, my ancestor, Jacob Holtzclaw, sold land to your ancestor! We included this area on the First Colony Tour this year and Perry Cabot, a local historian in Culpeper, spoke in depth about the group to us. He is very learned about them and all of their convuluted land transactions! There are also some really good maps of The Little Fork on George's Germanna History pages. Oh, BC does discuss George Wayman and his wife, Catherine Jung/Young--was she related to John Jung/Young, from Trupbach and the Jacob Holtzclaw's nephew, or was she part of the 1717 colony? If you have trouble finding the articles, I can send them to you via email as I've been doing quite a bit of research about this group. If so, is there any data available on her? Also, thanks for the info on the ship Oliver. Are there any good documents to read regarding the ship and its fate? Thanks again, Michael john.blankenbaker@comcast.net wrote: > George Caspar Wayman is discussed at page 509 of Germanna Record 5 by B.C. Holtzclaw. George Wayman was one of the lucky passengers on the ill-fated ship Oliver which sank off the coast of Virginia. Though the ship had left Rotterdam about June of 1738, it did not arrive at Virginia until the following January. Two of every three passengers lost their life due to starvation, disease, or drowning. George Wayman was named in the Freudenberg parish book. > > -- > John.Blankenbaker@comcast.net > > -------------- Original message ---------------------- > From: "Michael L. 1. [GERMANNA] Events of interest to Germanna descendants?
    2. Virginia Nuta
    3. Hello -- I am working on the next issue of the Germanna Newsletter, and I am looking for any events of interest to Germanna descendants to include in the Calendar of Events. The events can be anywhere, like the East Tennessee Germanna Reunion--they can be for a particular Germanna family name, or for genealogy or historical groups working with 18th century German migration, or for historical societies in areas associated with Germanna like Madison County's Kemper tea in September, or Culpeper Counties historical society, or the many events coming up with Fauquier County's celebrations. Just let me know! Virginia Nuta

    2. Michael asks if there is any good material on the ship Oliver. Yes, there is. Klaus Wust wrote a series of articles for Beyond Germanna starting with the number 1 issue of volume 10 of Beyond Germanna (page 541). The material extended through a few issues. -- John.Blankenbaker@comcast.net
