    1. [GERMANNA] KY Kinfolk, Louisville Herald Post 1930, reference to old Simon Miller and part of his family.Hord Family relationship?
    2. Winifred K Miller
    3. Found this article in the KY Explorer printed from the old Louisville Herald Post 1930 and as this is one of my lines worth investigating. " The will of Simon Miller of Stafford County, Virginia, dated July 30, 1798, is recorded at Fredericksburg, in Book A3, page 142. We have been told, through this column, of the original Capt. Simon Miller, born in England in 1642, who came to this country in 1673, and patented land in Old Rappahannock County, and reference made to some of his children, who lived in Essex County. It is through his son, John Miller, named in his will, whose son, John, had a son, Thomas, who was Thomas, John, Richard, Nancy, Jane, and Mary Miller, about whom we have been solicitous through the weeks, and thankful to those who have contributed information There must be many descendants of these children living in Jefferson County and other counties of the state". Mary (Mollie) Miller is mine. She married James Hord. The Jane mentioned may be the wife of Thomas Hord and the mother of James Hord that married my Mary Susan Mollie Miller. Remember a story that old Simon was a father and father in law to the same person.... This also opens up checking the KY Kinfolk Column published in 1930 for any past columns. Does any person have access to the will of Simon listed July 30, 1798? I have him deceased Nov 1799 in Spotsylvania, VA. They must have been " characters" from some of my papers I had copies from the Court House.

    2. May I recommend that you subscribe to these websites and post your queries there. You did well--you posted DATES, which is wonderful. _valouisa-l-request@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:valouisa-l-request@rootsweb.com) also to _VA-SOUTHSIDE-request@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:VA-SOUTHSIDE-request@rootsweb.com) Rootsweb has been taken over by Ancestry.com and the subscription process is different these days, but it is still FREE, thank goodness. (I subscribe to a few in United Kingdom, and the people are very helpful there, because a lot of records are centralized, and the censuses have not been destroyed!) Now, a few deeds and other Louisa Co. documents have been put on a webpage, and, fortunately for all of us, some kind person composed an index. This is far from complete, so don't give up hope. These are notes taken when a professional genealogist, Janice L. Abercrombie, was doing research for a client. Notes are not the same as transcribing a whole book of deeds or church records or court records. This is NOT a rootsweb or genforum or any particular organized genealogical website. Good luck in your searches. This is a surname index, which will link you with deeds of persons with that surname. It is a hit or miss proposition. If you are interested in some inexpensive books--abstracts of deeds, church records, tithable lists of early Louisa Co., write me privately. _http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm_ (http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm) (The Germanna Colonies rootsweb is mostly for those of us who are descended from several groups of Germans brought over [through England in some cases] ca 1714 and 1717 and perhaps later to work in the so-called iron mines of Virginia. Governor Spotswood was involved in this scheme.) (It is better to post to a county rootsweb--or a State rootsweb--when you have some details about your ancestry. One person was right about photography--a newish invention!!! Oh, yes, and always give some dates in your queries!!! Many people don't give dates, hence no responses.) This person is not my ancestor, and I have no further information. The name, which I recognized from Germanna Colonies e-mails and lists, was of interest. I have done no further research. Pass this info on to interested parties. Note the late dates. Also note that there is a time gap of 50 years between the will of one Ezekial Wilhoit and the later one. The last column is the will book number and the page. I shall not repeat the name every time. 1839 Wilhoit, Ezekial - will - 12-462 1839 " " inventory 12-9 1839 " " ad a/c 13-346 1841 " " Excr 14-170 1842 " " a/c sales 14-368 1843 " " Excr a/c 15-69 1845 " " " " 16-29 50 years later 1889 Wilhoit, Ezekial will 29-624 1839 - Wilhoit, Ezekial - Will Since typing the above, I dipped into the census indexes on Ancestry.com and found listings for Ezekial Wilhoit and Wilhard in Albemarle Co. in these census years: 1850 1870 1880 - the last image is quite faded. I did not do the actual reading. I hope this is of interest to some curious genealogist/family historian. 1. [GERMANNA] Doing Research in Early Kentucky - Suggestions
    2. Since a good many of the descendants, at least of the First Germanna Colony, migrated to Kentucky, one needs to be aware of several shortcomings in doing research in that state [commonwealth]: 1. The counties multiplied--and divided. Woodford Co. is mentioned in one recent query/answer to a query. One has to be aware of the parent county in whatever State you are researching. This is what the Family History Library Catalog [Place search] says about Woodford Co., KY Formed 1788, created from Fayette County. A disaster in 1965 destroyed most of the records. 2. The 1790 census for Virginia, which included Kentucky and whatever other land Virginia claimed, is among the missing censuses. In order to make up for this missing census, two diligent genealogists compiled three volumes called The 1787 Census of Virginia. This so-called census includes all the the-then counties in Kentucky. If you live in Virginia or Kentucky or near a large genealogical library, try to find these three volumes. The third volume is an index of the surnames and given names in the preceding two volumes. They will be shelved with Census records, for the most part. Netti Schreiner Yantis and Florine S. Love, The 1787 Census of Virginia This is the full title as found in the FHL catalog _The 1787 census of Virginia : an accounting of the name of every white male tithable over 21 years, the number of white males between 16 & 21 years, the number of slaves over 16 & those under 16 years, together with a listing of their horses, cattle & carriages, and also the names of all persons to whom ordinary licenses and physician's licenses were issued_ (http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titlen o=622815&disp=The+1787+census+of+Virginia) This is a compilation of all the existing 1787 personal property tax lists for every county in Virginia for that year. A few counties are missing. Be sure to check all references in the Index to your ancestor--or collateral. Why? Because -- I discovered that my ancestor from Albemarle Co., VA was already making his move to Madison Co., KY. He is listed in both localities. The personal property was livestock and slaves [see description above], so be quite careful when copying this material. Copy the key which is in the first volume and probably the second volume also. A good many widows are listed--good for finding your *missing* ladies! Interestingly enough, the wealthiest man in Albemarle Co. VA seemed to be Thomas Jefferson, according to the tax list for his district.. In the past, I have found the lady in charge of the Kentucky land records in Frankfort--The Secretary of State is her boss, but he changes all the time--has been most cooperative in the past when I have written to her inquiring about land grants for various relatives and collaterals. One time she sent me a map of the land holdings of the person from whom my ancestor bought his land--Island No. 2 in the Mississippi, which Island no longer exists!! Another time, she sent me information about an North Carolina ancestor's widowed daughter to whom he had bequeathed some land in Kentucky. I am not sure this kind lady is still there. But--be thoughtful and explain as much as you can--and give dates, for goodness' sake. (So many queries are missing dates. When did this event occur--yesterday? A century ago?) Of course, when you are searching for any name, be aware of misspellings. Hultzclaw and so forth are common misspellings. My ancestor's surname is Kemper, spelled Kamper and Camper. At least two John Kempers are in early Garrard Co., KY but at least one of them bought his land from Holtzclaw, who I believe was in Mercer Co. But be sure to find the parent county of whatever county you are researching in Kentucky--and especially in Virginia!!! If you are beginning your research in a new jurisdiction, such as a new State, you may find Guidance on the Familysearch.org website. Research Outlines are thoroughly researched and edited before publication. The nice thing about Research Outlines is that if the document/book has been filmed, frequently the film number will be given--saving you a good deal of time. Best of luck!! 2. This marriage is listed in a book I have of early Madison Co., KY marriages. Source is given below. Interestingly, contrasted with most other marriages in this book, the Wilhoite-Crigler marriage does not list a bondsman nor a consent, nor is there a bond date. The return was 28 Dec 1815. No marriages are recorded in Madison Co. for a male Crigler nor Krigler for this period through 1822. Madison Co. divided into other counties. Searches may need to be made in adjoining counties. 3. Bute County, NC was cut out of Old Granville County, NC. It only existed from 1764-79 and then was absorbed back into Warren, Halifax, Vance, Granville Counties after 1779. What's so interesting about this county is that it's like a time capsule. Also, this county was home base of the Transylvania Land Company ( Richard Henderson & others involved with TN/KY lands, Daniel Boone, etc.). Second thing, is the wagon road, out of Va, ran through this county, so, appears it was a staging point for moves West. I'm guessing many people elected this route from VA, through NC, and then on to TN/KY ... Just an opinion, from looking at migratory paths. Anyone who has Fauquier/Staford/Westmoreland area family connections, might want to search this site ...Seems to be many of the same surnames here. Bute Coutny Location: On today's maps, if you locate Roanoke River in NC, then old Bute County ran along south side of NC/VA line and included lands on the southwest side of Roanoke River in the area of current Vance,Warren & Halifax counties.
