    3. I am the person looking for Daniel Hitt.  I am very familiar with the book you mention since I own a copy.  I believe the book is listed as Germanna Record No. 1.  The information given is minimal at best.  I often use the LDS library catalog and use the Family History Center on a regular basis.  Asking on the list was a last try for me having exhausted all other avenues. I am sorry you had a difficult time in Columbia SC.  I am guessing you were visiting the SC Archives.  Sherman and Cornwallis both did a lot of damage to courthouses and records when they marched through.  Unfortunately, Sumter County really took a hit from them both.  If you will contact me off list, I will see if I can find anything for you on your Revolutionary War sergeant.  I use the archives on a regular basis.. If not, write to the Germanna Foundation and see what they have. However, I would look over all the other listings, as you may stumble on a cousin author--live or deceased!!! I think one of the Kempers had a Hitt bride!!! But they went to Kentucky and from there -- everywhere!!! We know of both Campers and Kempers in the descendency from the Germanna colonists. However, the histories that I have read indicate he was known as John Kemper after he settled. Are there primary source records that show he that he called himself John Camper? [above unsigned] Response from and confession of E.W.Wallace I really do not do a great deal of research on the Kempers in Virginia because I mostly work my way from *what I know* to the earliest days, rather than from the earliest days to the linkage which I have with the Kemper family--my paternal great-grandmother Amanda Jane Kemper, born in Texas ca 1845 but whose father was born most probably in Garrard Co., KY. About spelling--always regard the fact that the person making the records was generally the county clerk or the court clerk and not the principals themselves!!! Kemper, like many a German name, was spelled at least three ways: Kemper [modern spelling generally], Kamper and Camper. The difficulty I find is that the records list too MANY John Kempers!!! In Garrard Co., KY, where I do a good deal of my searching, there were two known John Kempers. No doubt they were related, but to what degree I know not. One was the grandfather of my great-grandmother. He lived near the Dicks River and his wife was Sarah Rosser. Another was probably a younger John Kemper who lived south of the elder John Kemper, and his wife was Judith Burdett [also spelled Burditt]. {I have written this from memory, and this may be in error) I suspect your best bet to study the early Kempers are 1) read the Kemper family genealogy on HeritageQuest, which database is available through many public libraries and some State libraries and 2) read the books of John K. Gott and others who have compiled books of Fauquier Co., VA. Fauquier Co. was formed 1759 from Prince William Co. Prince William Co. was formed in 1730 from Stafford and King George Cos. King George Co. was formed from Richmond County, and part of Westmoreland County was added later. My experience is that the records of Prince William Co. and of Stafford Co. are missing. The name of the book on HeritageQuest and also a film at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City is Kemper, Willis Miller Genealogy of the Kemper family in the United States: descendants of John Kemper of Virginia; with a short historical sketch of his family and of the German Reformed colony at Germanna and Germantown, VA. If you live near an LDS family history center, you probably can order--for a fee- the film of the Kemper genealogy from Salt Lake City. It is a hefty book. Not all Kempers seem to be included, but it will give you a start. The book is over 100 years old, so try to double check each family presented. This may not be easy to do, as I am certain that the later generations corresponded with Mr. Kemper--as I am certain my great-grandmother did. Even she, who had never been out of the State of Texas, made an error in the birthplace of her deceased husband!!! This book should be supplemented by some of the appropriate publications of the Germanna Memorial Foundation. Genealogy is NOT easy!!! E.W.Wallace **************Life should be easier. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Migrating Germanna Descendants - Some Possible Resources
    2. About your *missing* Daniel Hitt: Some of these South Caroline folks moved to territory under Federal Jurisdiction after the Louisiana Purchase [Remember that event?]. Parts of Mississippi and Louisiana, in particular, were filled with persons leaving South Carolina after the invention of the cotton gin. If you can access a book by Dr. Anne Gregorie about Sumter Co., SC, you can read about these migrations. This is from a google.com search: _History of Sumter County, South Carolina. (Open Library)_ (http://openlibrary.org/b/OL6156580M) History of Sumter County, South Carolina. by Anne King Gregorie Published in 1954, Library Board of Sumter County (Sumter) ... The invention of the cotton gin allowed small farmers to plant more cotton, and, in the case of large families, whole families migrated to parts of what were included in Louisiana Purchase states. For a possible clue as to some of these migrations, particularly from the *Old South*, check the BLM [Bureau of Land Management] website at _http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/_ (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/) However, if you are near a large genealogical library or a University library, try to check any online catalogs near you for a book entitled Grassroots of America by Phillip W. McMullin.. This is a computerized index of land grants appearing in American State Papers--some lands granted by the British and the Spanish before the Americans took over. Some of the volumes of American State Papers pertain to private claims.and the citizens were presenting them again to US Congress. I did a google.com search for Grassroots of American and came up with this info--which I tried to copy and paste. Hope the formatting is not too strange. _Public Lands and Claims in the American State Papers,1789–1837_ (http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/summer/state-papers.html) Although the CIS index is not as comprehensive as Grassroots of America for individual names, it can lead to information in the other classes of the ... www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/summer/state-papers.html - The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has microfiched this valuable index called Grassroots of America and it is on six microfiche NO. 6051323 Last time I ordered microfiche through my local LDS family history center, each fiche cost me 15 cents apiece. The price may have gone up!!! Remember, this is an index only--surname + given name and some volumes and pages--which pages pertain to American State Papers. These papers were compiled by Gales and Seaton on the orders of Congress. Many of these claims or papers pertaining to the claims had been burned during the War of 1812, when the British burned parts of Washington, DC. There was another edition of American State Papers, but the index mentioned pertains only to the Gales and Seaton edition. If you live near Houston and are not fearful about going into downtown Houston [some Houstonians I know decline to go there--but genealogists are generally fearless!!!], this will interest you: _American State Papers_ (http://www.houstonlibrary.org/clayton/clf/lr002.html) Clayton Library has the original volumes of American State Papers published by Gales and Seaton, two editions of Grassroots of America, and the Southern ... www.houstonlibrary.org/clayton/clf/lr002.html - 9k - Well, to test the BLM website, I searched the first tab--Land Patents--for Hitt in Mississippi, and found two screens full of them!!! Look for more recent books by Walter Lowrie, some of which have recently been republished by Southern Historical Press ca 1986. These are parts of another version of American State Papers, but, in some respects, they are quite detailed about early claims under the Spanish or the English. I did not find any Kempers in Mississippi [at least one county is named for Samuel and possibly Reuben Kemper], but when I looked in Louisiana, I found a few Kempers, including Samuel!!! Although this info may not help you locate your missing ancestor, you will have learned a lot about where you might search for people who got federal land from the Gulf of Mexico [but not Texas, which has its own land commission] to the Canadian border!!! After I heard a lecture long ago about Grassroots of America, a whole new world of genealogy opened up for me--and has kept me chasing Scotts and Kellers, formerly of South Carolina, through Mississippi, and Louisiana in the early days after the Americans took over!!! If you have any interest in the Kempers, do a google.com search for Samuel Kemper. The Handbook of Texas has a couple of detailed paragraphs about him!!! I am searching for a connection between Daniel Hitt listed as head of household in the 1830 census Abbeville District SC and known Germanna Hitt descendants living in the same area.  He was the son-in-law of Nathan Chaney and is named in Nathan's will.  Unfortunately, in this will Nathan does not refer to his daughter by name.  She is referred to as "my daughter who married Daniel Hitt".  So irritating!! This Daniel Hitt is not listed in the 1840 or later censuses in SC.  I think he may have moved elsewhere but currently have no idea where.  In the 1830's and 1840's SC suffered a net loss in population as people moved westward into Georgia, Alabama, etc.. Some of his sons kept the Kemper name and you may be descended from them. John Camper married Alice Cathrina Utterback. Their son Harman Camper married Catherina Elisabeth Coontz (Kuntz). One of their sons was John W. Camper. From there this line is Peter Camper, John Lee Camper,Robert Withers Camper, William Thomas Camper, me. My grandson is the last male Camper in this line. 2. They must have a pretty close relationship with Nathan and Jincey. She stayed close to them after Nathan's death. She and her mother in law, Rhoda, are named in the Cherokee Land Lottery of 1821, next to each other. My ancestress, Charlotte Holtzclaw Burnes, had moved to Tennessee with her family prior to Timothy's death, so all of those grand children were far away. I think that Royland Beasley is Jincey's brother. Barb In a message dated 11/19/2008 05:55:50 Pacific Standard Time, holtzclaw.research@yahoo.com writes: Wonder why Nathan names a daughter-in-law in his will? Most of the time daughters-in-law are not mentioned. Also in the Wilkes County Loose Papers is found the appointment of Royland Beasley as guardian of William B. Holtzclaw, orphan and minor of Nathan Holtzclaw, deceased. No date is given but would have been after 1814.
