    3. When my husband retired, we bought an old farm (house is 120 yrs) on the Little Kanawha River, a tributary of the Ohio River, in WV - only to learn later that Abraham Thomas (and perhaps his father, Michael, my 5th ggrandfather) claimed and settled, at least temporarily, on "land in Monongalia Co on the Main fork of the little Kanaway (Kanawha) on the south side of said Kanaway to include his Settlement made in the year 1774" (Core). They have paddled up and down the river that runs by our house. We garden, have chickens, eat deer meat and fish, and are 2 mi of dirt road to the nearest neighbor, and it's dark at night and quiet. I often think I have some sense of how folks lived -- and then use my satellite internet connection to learn the weather forecast and whether the river will flood, and have my fresh roasted coffee beans delivered by FedEx - so I remind myself, it's only the slightest inkling.

    3. Hello Janice -- here is the financial arrangement in the National Capital Region regarding Girl Scout Cookies: In our council, girls get 60 cents per box to the troop - which they use to do activities. Teen girls can opt to skip incentives and get 65 cents. $1.64 goes to direct services (programs, organizing troops, training). $1.06 is the cost of the sale (product, promotion, incentives, transportation) and $.20 is administrative costs. Money stays at the local council. > PS I quit buying Girl Scout cookies as I was told they only received .02 > cents per box....the rest of the money going to maintain huge building and > administrative costs. 3. James, I thought your post elicited quite a few replies. Sometimes these rootsweb messages are like a scramble from a multi- CD player....out of sequence and at random. As far as dirty shoes, add to that filthy cars. Just last November I posted to this list about the absolutely amazing journey to the Leroy Kilby grave yard near Slate Mills to mark his service in the War of 1812. I believe I sent photos from that event to about 100 people. It was also in the Culpeper Exponent. This event occurred on a rainy day but the sun broke just in time. After we had gone through 3 gates, trespassed on private property, mired down in mud and up very steep and slippery slopes, and greeted by about 20 horses, mules and other equine of questionable genetic origin, and all of their droppings. So, at least these correspondent can certify his shoes are definitely very dirty. So was his jeep. Nothing, however, is more fun and enjoyable than than real life, in the field, experiences like these. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Old Homesteads
    2. Well, I can't say I've visited an older homestead, but I have visited the village when an earlier ancestor lived and the old part of the church where he worshipped. While there I attended the communion service on Sunday and was welcomed to receive communion. Hochdorf-Nagold formerly Hocdorf a Horb. has records showing my earliest ancestor Hans Katz being born there before 1475. The tax and military records are available back to the early 1500s. Land records are still not transcribed and are not readily available. The first Katz, my ancestor, left in 1738 and over 350 relatives left over the next 200 plus years for America. The last known one coming in 1953. This village of Hochdorf had about 65 residents come in two different ships. One in 1749 and another in 1751. All were rather closely related.

    3. Janice, Does your Adam Fisher, Jr. connect with the Adam Fisher (b. 1783) who migrated to Mercer County, (now Boyle) Kentucky with his father and uncles Stephen and Barnard? This Adam is buried in Lobb Cemetery in Blue Springs, Jackson County, Missouri. http://www.geniecorner.com/HTML/Lobb.html If it is the same Adam, I would like to know more about his time in Indiana. 3. At the Kentucky Archives in Frankfort, I was able to hold and touch my ancestor John Funk's original divorce pleadings from 1798, which was kind of an odd thrill for a family law attorney.... Touched and photocopied another ancestor's War of 1812 "invoice" to the federal government for the costs of his militia at the National Archives...patted his gravestone in Jeffersontown, KY, and said, "I know what you did!" I hope many of you will come to the reunion in Virginia this year, where the biggest thrill for this 2nd colony descendant is to sit in a church where I know my ancestors sat, and gaze out at the surrounding mountains as they must have done. It is a great feeling. Virginia Nuta

    2. It's been a long time since we have been reminded to make sure we change the subject line to what the new message is really about. After tiring of walking the old homestead to buy Girl Scout Cookies, I began trashing the postings due to lack of time. I accidentally opened one and found a wonderful will about a person that I had been wondering about! The person's name was not in the subject line. I also am guilty of forgetting and just hitting Reply and going at it on another subject. Thanks, Cary

    3. Or just at a very busy time of life. :) All three of our kids are/were active in Scouts. Our daughter is now in College, but we have great memories of activities such as camping and rafting together. Both of our sons are still active in Scouts. Our son, Adam, has earned the rank of Eagle. Adam Willhite - Eagle: 09-07-08 http://www.troop51bsa.us/Eagles.html The picture on the Troop's main web page is from the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico http://www.troop51bsa.us/ But, we have hiked and camped in many of Virginia's parks and forests, including Old Rag http://www.troop51bsa.us/Doc/Old_Rag_area.pdf I have often thought about our ancestors while out in the beautiful wilderness that Virginia still has to offer, wondered if they perhaps walked some of the same paths, saw some of the same sites, etc. It was hard work at times, but the boys loved helping take care of animals on the nearby farm, and we do point out that what they were doing was an everyday event, for many of their ancestors who came to America years ago. Yes, we have chopped wood for a fire, drank - filtered - water from streams, cooked our meals over the fire, food that we caught, brought, or picked (berries for instance) along the way, and we have slept under Virginia's moon and stars. At times you cannot help but wonder, as you are looking up and thinking about them, could they be looking down, and thinking about you? Our time here is very short; our kids are only with us for a little while, treasure every moment!
