    3. Ok, we are related as Robert Slaughter Jr. and Mary Smith also had William Slaughter married to Katherine Zimmerman. Their son Gabriel married Frances Sophia Hord.

    1. [GERMANNA] Genealogy Conference, Washington, D.C. area
    2. Virginia Nuta
    3. I highly recommend this conference, described below, for those who live in the D.C. area. It is sponsored by the LDS. Last year, after attending a workshop on immigration records, I was able to go home, get on the computer, and locate one of my husband's family's home villages in Poland, before nightfall. This was for a family that thought it was from Russia! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are pleased to invite you to the Washington DC Family History Center's 3rd annual Family History Conference on Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 am - 3:15 pm, at 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington, MD 20895. For class descriptions and registration information, please visit our website at: www.wdcfhc.org. This conference is free of charge and features 14 classes that cover a wide variety of topics including a 4-session track on newFamilySearch, online website research and DNA in genealogy. The keynote speech, "Preserving Your Personal and Family History" will be delivered by Dr. Gregory A. Prince. We hope to see you on April 25! Thank you. Carol Petranek, Director

    3. I'm at work so I don't have a bibliography of sources to submit with my response, but I believe that you'll find that your sources have confused several key relationships in the cluster of families and individuals you are trying to sort out. There were a series of articles published over a period of several years in the Virginia Genealogist (edited and published by John Frederick Dorman, who is also a Slaughter descendant), so that would be a good place to start. There's also a fine article on the Towneley/Warner (and Smith) kin-network that is key to determining the relationships between these families. I'll try to remember to look it up at home, and post it tomorrow. Anyway, I think you'll find that while Mary Smith (wife of Col. Robert Slaughter, Jr.) was indeed the daughter of Augustine Smith (I think he's actually a Major, like his father), we don't really know who her mother was. I've seen the name Mary Carver mentioned (although some secondary sources, if I remember correctly) have also floated that name for Maj. Lawrence Smith's wife (i.e. Augustine Smith's mother). Usually, however, Augustine Smith's wife is identified as a Susannah (maiden name unknown). Augustine Smith, was indeed the son of Maj. Lawrence Smith, but his mother (and as far as I know Lawrence Smith's only wife) was Mary Debnam, daughter of William and Catherine Debnam. Mrs. Catherine (or Katherine, I've seen it spelled both ways) Debnam married Rev. Charles Grymes, after the death of William Debnam, and they are the ancestors of the very prominent Grymes family that intermarried with the Lee (Robert E. is a descendant), Page, and other elite Tidewater families. Major Lawrence Smith was the son of Christopher Smith and Elizabeth Towneley (widow of a Halstead). Elizabeth Towneley Halstead Smith's sister, Mary Towneley, was the wife of Augustine Warner, Sr. Their son, Augstine Warner, Jr. was married to Mildred Reade (if I remember correctly), and George Washington is among their descendants (so it's easy enough to verify the Warner/Towneley and Warner/Reade marriages). You didn't raise the issue, but once you begin to research the families, you'll find that Col. Robert Slaughter, husband of Mary Smith, was the son of Frances Jones, and the grandson of Col. Cadwallader Jones and, in all probability, Catherine/Katherine Debnam, widow of Robert Taliaferro, and daughter of William and Catherine/Katherine (N.) Debnam. Hope this helps. Jeff Duvall (descended from Col. Robert Slaughter, Jr., and Mary Smith's son Col. Francis Slaughter) -----Original Message----- From: germanna_colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germanna_colonies-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Winifred K Miller Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 1:13 PM To: germanna_colonies@rootsweb.com Subject: [GERMANNA] Wife of Augustine Warner immigrant 1635 I have found three different names for wives of an Augustine Warner: Mildred Reede, Anne Fisher, Mary Townley. 3. We should make a collection of all of these for now land in the future. I have had three great moments and one very terrible moment walking in my ancestors’ shoes. First great moment: My first trip to Madison County and finding a piece of Adam's original land for sale. Second great moment: Touching the deed book from c.1728 where Adam Yager's original land patent was recorded (Spotsylvania Court House in Fredericksburg). Third great moment: The first service I attended in the Hebron Lutheran Church Worst moment in my life: After researching the Adam Yager's original land patent and following the deeds and transfers from 1728 to the present, not being able to buy the land and keep it in the family for another 270 years.
