    3. Recently Footnote has added some Rev. War information, including some letters written to Washington requesting information on my John Wilhite. One page of his pension had many names that requested information and written by date of request. Requests came from Indiana, Kansas, KY and Oklahoma. A Robert Duker (3-30-1938)from Martinsville, Indiana stated John was his wife's gggrandfather. He also stated Lucy Stapp was John's second wife. (I question this) Any feed back on a first wife named ? Smith married to John? I have John and Lucy Stapp married c 1769 in Orange County. In 1936 a lawyer Jos. A Guthrie, stated one of John's daughters (Martitia)married Alexander Guthrie. Other names were Stafford, Messeur, Simpson etc. There is information on Tobias (John's brother) and his family. My Tobias was John's son and I believe named for his brother. This avenue seems a wealth of information if you haven't visited the site before.

    3. Marriage Affidavit, Marriage Record, Marriage License According to the Crawfordsville District Public Library http://history.cdpl.lib.in.us/marriage.html "A marriage affidavit is a statement where someone appears with the couple at the courthouse and swears that both parties are of legal age and that no impediment to the marriage exists. Some affidavits were filled out by the parents/guardians or by the clerk with parents/guardians present. Some of the records also contain handwritten consents for underage grooms or brides." "A marriage record includes full name of groom and bride (maiden name, if a widow), place of residence, age next birthday, race, occupation, place of birth, father's name, mother's maiden name, number of previous marriages, place of marriage, by whom married, date of marriage (month, day, year), record number." "A license usually includes full first name and surname of groom and bride, race, place of birth, place of residence, occupation, father's name, mother's maiden name, number of previous marriages, place of marriage, by whom married, date of marriage (month, day, year), record number." 3. Could Henry President Wilhite/Willhite read and/or write? According to the 1870 Census Indiana, Montgomery County, Coal Creek Township, Crawfordsville Post Office, Page 11, line 26. Henry President Wilhite/Willhite: Column 16, Could not read Column 17, Could not write Same for Susan Ann (Batteral) Wilhite/Willhite Is this information 100% reliable? Probably not. However, if he did not sign his marriage document, and the 1870 Census record suggests that he could not read and that he could not write, I would lean toward these being facts, unless/until something more conclusive supports an alternate answer. By the way - In the 1870 Census Henery President's last name was spelled Willhite. In the 1880 Census Henery President's last name was spelled Wilhite. Henry and family can be found on the following 1880 Census record: Indiana, Montgomery County, Coal Creek Township, Page 12, Supervisor's Dist. No. 4, Enumeration Dist. No. 90, line 25. 3. good info, but I still don't understand the rationale behind having two documents (affadavit and license) that seem to be for the same purpose, i.e., someone's getting married. Also, under the explanation for license, it looks like they are asking for the particulars of the actual wedding ceremony (isn't that usually part of the marriage certificate/record?), and asks for much the same info on the marriage record...I guess I'm not quite getting the fine distinctions. I guess some things one has to take on faith (smile)...as always, thanks for your help Madelon On Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 11:38 AM, Rick Willhite <[email protected]>wrote: > > Marriage Affidavit, Marriage Record, Marriage License > > According to the Crawfordsville District Public Library > http://history.cdpl.lib.in.us/marriage.html > > "A marriage affidavit is a statement where someone appears with the > couple at the courthouse and swears that both parties are of legal age > and that no impediment to the marriage exists. Thanks for your reply, I will indeed take this into consideration...however, I am curious: why would a clerk put an 'X' on a document with 'his mark' written over it if the person making the attestation were capable of signing his own name? thanks, Madelon On Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 1:34 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: > > > The document you are looking at is probably a court copy written start to > finish by a court clerk. > Remember that there were no copy machines and the court carried a hand > written copy > in most instances. 3. Thanks for the information, Rick....I have one correction to make, the document that H.P. Wilhite made his mark on was not a marriage license, it was a marriage affadavit...not sure why they needed one as opposed to a license, maybe someone more familiar with Indiana marriage laws and customs could enlighten me...thanks, Madelon On Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 4:57 AM, Rick Willhite <[email protected]>wrote: > > Susan Ann Batteral and Henry President Willhite > > Some additional information which might help with Susan Ann Batteral and > Henry President Willhite > > Willhite Family Bible > http://ingenweb.org/inmontgomery/bibles/willhite.htm > > Excerpts: > > "Henry President Willhite b. 3. Susan Ann Batteral and Henry President Willhite Some additional information which might help with Susan Ann Batteral and Henry President Willhite Willhite Family Bible http://ingenweb.org/inmontgomery/bibles/willhite.htm Excerpts: "Henry President Willhite b. 2. The document you are looking at is probably a court copy written start to finish by a court clerk. Remember that there were no copy machines and the court carried a hand written copy in most instances. This person may very well have been illiterate, but you would not be able to tell by this document for the most part. Originals can be found at the courthouses however clerk transcribed copies are the norm. Note: This is in my experience and may not be yours. <<One other bit of information, Henry President Wilhite must have been illiterate, because the signature on the wedding license is in the same handwriting as the person who filled out the rest of the paperwork, and there is an "x" by his name with the notation "his mark". 3. I can help out here. Henry President Wilhite and Susan Batteral gave birth to my great-grandmother, Myrtle Ann Wilhite, and several sons (I have all that info, but won't go into it here...I can supply it later if anyone is interested). Myrtle Ann married John W. Harmon on or about 10SEP1890 (I have a copy of their marriage license). Henry President signed the license application. Myrtle Ann and John had several children, one of whom was my grandmother, Retta Marie Harmon. Retta married twice, the second time to Arthur Wake, and (among other children) had my mother, Bertha Wake (who is 92 and living, I'm going to visit her this Friday). Bertha married Amor Alvin Lorentz and had me (Madelon Redena Lorentz) and my brother. I have a picture of my grandmother (Retta) and her mother (Myrtle Ann) taken when Retta was about 15 years of age. I also have a couple of letters Myrtle Ann wrote to my mother. Myrtle Ann (who is sometimes referred to in records as 'Myrta') and John Harmon were divorced and she was remarried to a man named Davis and a man named Townsend (although there is some speculation if she and Townsend were, indeed, formally married). She and John Harmon, however, went to live with one of their sons when elderly, on a farm the son owned in Missouri. Both of them died there. They did not remarry each other as far as the family knows. I'll try to get more specific information together and send to you. My mom says Myrtle Ann was a woman far ahead of her time, that she was very independent and didn't take guff from anyone, especially a man (smile)....anyway, hope this is of some help, and I'll be happy to try and answer any specific questions you may have about the family. 2. Don, The earliest Wilhite that I have in my Thomas tree was President. I don't know where he fits into the family but you can see the speculation about him that Gerald Wilhite sent to me a few years ago. Henry President Wilhite married Susan Batteral. Here is where she fits into the Thomas family -- through two lines. I wish that I could be more help for you on the Wilhite family but this is all that I have. 1. [GERMANNA] Germanna 13
    2. don willhoit
    3. The Germanna Record No. 13 contains a wealth of information on "The Wilhoit Family", starting with the immigrant Johann Michael WILLHEIT. The author is John Connie Wilhite, Jr. I have made unsuccessful attempts to locate the author. Does anyone know if he is still alive? Or the whereabouts of his data? G13 contains bio info on the first four generations, ending with number 350, Young Wilhoit, Jr. Descendants through number 1267 are listed. Al Welch and I would like to find what data may exist on numbers 351-1267 and beyond. Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Don Willhoit (Johann Michael, Tobias, Conrad, Solomon, John, James Harrison, James Templeton, Marion Templeton, Robert Gillmor)
