    1. Re: [GERMANNA] Errors in Editing Data in the Germanna Tree at Ancestry
    2. One thing that I have learned is to search for a source that may have already been entered for the fact that you are using before entering a new one. That way it keeps a smaller source list to navigate. I have been entering my sources by county rather than what type of records they are. e.g. I use Culpeper Co., VA Deed Book rather than Deed Book Culpeper Co., VA. Just my personal choice. It is good to be as consistent as possible. TAke care. Marilyn George - Could you add a page to your website that includes tips you are learning about editing the tree? Offering some guidelines would be a very helpful resource. Marc

    3. Please add E1b1b1c1a to the data and when the test was taken. I have cc'd Corlee Morris, who coordinates the Germanna DNA Project, to ask if she has other suggestions for what to include. On Sep 8, 2011, at 9:32 AM, gneolog@aol.com wrote: Is anyone using DNA as a source for relationships in the Germanna tree. I am going to add the following note today to the page for Johannes Thomas and then use DNA as a source for parentage on the specific sublines who have been tested. "Y-DNA tested from direct male lines of John Thomas of Guilford Co., NC and Michael Thomas of Fayette Co., KY confirms that these two were the brothers, Hans/John and Michael Thomas of Culpeper Co., VA., sons of Johannes and Anna Maria Blankenbaker Thoma" Do you think any more info is needed or should this cover it. The most obvious difference between this Thomas line and the others is the haplogroup -- E1b1b1c1a -- the only Thomas men tested who belong to this haplogroup -- and we have 11 lines tested from desecendants of these two men -- still have miles to go but definitely well into our journey. I disagreed, saying that Germanna descendants could not possibly make mistakes. (GRIN) Well, I have been proven wrong. I've discovered mistakes where people just clicked the wrong place. In all those cases I know of, the "Editor" emailed me, or left a comment for the person involved, and I corrected those errors. Now, what really ticks me off is when "Editors" go in and haphazardly change data I had entered in the original database. I AM NOT so proud of ownership that nothing can be changed, or so sure of myself to think there are no mistakes in the database. But, when I have included source documentation for events, such as marriages, and someone ignores the sources and inputs his/her data, changes spouses' names, dates, etc., I'm upset. Most of the problems have occurred when someone was working on a person where there were multiple people with the exact name. Folks, MAKE SURE YOU ARE EDITING THE CORRECT PERSON!!!!! MAKE SURE WHEN YOU ADD A SPOUSE, CHILD, ETC., THAT THE PERSON IS NOT ALREADY IN THE DATABASE. If you want to add a spouse or child, you are given the choice to add a new person, or one already existing in the Tree. Look before you leap! At least one of you combined two men with the same name, gave the wives of both husbands to the newly created combined person. LOOK AT DATES, LOOK AT PLACES, LOOK AT SOURCE DOCUMENTS IF THEY ARE GIVEN, LOOK AT PARENTS, LOOK AT THE BIRTH DATES OF PARENTS TO SEE IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO GIVE THEM THE CHILDREN YOU WANT TO GIVE THEM. If you have a wife born 1769, don't give her children born 8-12 years after she was born. Just not possible. WARNING: If I see repeated bad editing from someone, I WILL take that person of "Edit" status, but he/she will still be able to "Contribute", just not change anything already in the Tree. If that person continues to add bad data, I will place that person on "View" status only. No adding, no editing. If you are as confused as I was when I started the Tree, you WILL have problems adding, deleting, changing data. There is a steep learning curve and you MUST figure out how to do things BEFORE "Contributing" or "Editing". Sorry to come across so harshly, but we can't have people changing data in a willy-nilly fashion. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Thoma/Thomas Family
    2. Craig, I can't vouch for Edmund in any manner but I can confirm that the John and Michael Tomer who got the land patent in Culpeper are the brothers John Thomas who ended up in Rockingham Co., NC and Michael who ended up in Fayette Co., KY since their descendants share the same DNA markers on 67 markers. Pretty convincing evidence. Edmund strikes me as an English name but no science connected with that idea -- just rambling. There is some other English Thomas and German Thomas interaction -- I suspect that is the case in the Railsback/Huffman line with a Presley Thomas and would love to learn more about this line. Also possibly an English and German Thomas intermarriage in Warren Co., KY in the Henry Thomas, son of Michael line. In Orange Co, there is also a Lewis, Owen, Joseph and Elizabeth Thomas mixed in with the Hardin's who interacted with the Holtzclaws. Lots of unanswered questions. Take care. 1. [GERMANNA] George and Mary Magdelane Holt
    2. Does anyone know what DB this deed was recorded I have pages 524-527 June 30, 1764 Culpeper Co. George Holt and Mary Magdelane his wife of Brumfield Parish, Culpeper County, to Jacob Medley of same. For 100 pounds current money, 78 acres on both side of the Robertson River in the parish aforesaid-- corner to Jacob Medley which he purchased from Jacob Blankenbeker-- corner to Michel Thomas on the north side of branch--- to Robertson River--- on the top of a hill corner to Michel Thomas George (H) Holt Mary Magdalain (X) Holt Witness James Barbour Jr., John Bohannon, Samuel French, John Lacy, Wm. (W O) O' Neal. This land must have been next to the original Blankenbaker land patent since that was the only land that Michael Thomas owned in Culpeper Co. How did Jacob Blankebaker come to own this land and who were the Holt's. I cannot figure out from the abstract that I have if Medley or Holt had the land originally. Appears (without punctuation) that Holt brought it from Blankenbaker and then sold to Medley and we can surmise that Michael and Catherine were living on adjoining land with their family. Take care. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Ortsippenbuch
    2. Thanks to the wonderful help in SLC, I was able to interpret the Danish census records of his ancestors. It helped that they gave me a hand out -- of the entries in Danish for the census and then the English equivalent. I was quite proud of myself esp working in Danish records where the surname changed with each generation. For those of you who have not this joy -- the surname of the child was taken from the first name of the father so the children of Hans Pedersen (whose father was named Peder something) became someone Hansen. Such fun. If they had stopped the practice one generation earlier --I would be Marilyn Mortensen rather than Hansen. <smile> Take care. But best of all, the book also included Tax and military records, which with my finds in surrounding villages of Katz ancestry, I was able to document the Katz family back to 1475 in Hochorf-Nagold. Even if you have an Ortsippenbuch for you village, I really think it wise to get the church microfilm and look up at least your direct line. I think it is great to have the Godparents names. It is rare that I have found close relatives as Godparents, but in Hochdorf, the Katz village, everyone descends from a Katz someway. Some more than others--I found one that had descent at least a dozen ways from the original Katz. About 300 left for America over the years. This is the joy of using the original churchbooks. Yes, it is a struggle at the beginning, but I have seen many folks at the FHC here become able to extract the important information, or at least identify persons who who be relatives. 1. [GERMANNA] Neuenburg
    2. Thanks Patricia for the wonderful explanation of the compilation of church records. I got to thinking about Albrecht and Barbara Thoma who first show up in the records in 1685 with the birth of johannes even though the records started in 1648. The mystery -- where were they before this? This young family with the almost 3 year old son and a pregnant wife had to relocate in 1788 when the nine years war engulfed their area. Did Albrecht go with them or did he stay to defend his new home? There is a 6 year gap between the child born in 1788 and the next child. Was their home destroyed during the destruction that took place in the area. When did they got to go home? Then I got to thinking about the other families in Neuenburg -- the Blankenbaker's, the Scheibles , Schlucters and Fleishmans. What is the first record for them in these church records. I can only assume that Albrecht and Barbara married not long before the birth of Johannes in 1685 because there is no record for any other children previous to him getting married or a death in the church records and they apparently married elsewhere. Did the other four families arrive about the same time? Did they travel together? Take care. Marilyn

    1. Re: [GERMANNA] [GERMANS-VA] Signature Marks
    2. That is so very interesting. The Thomas guys mostly used styled initials but it's good to know they were able to do that. Take care. Marilyn -----Original Message----- From: George W. One of the SNAPP men came over the mountain and married one of the Germanna women, I forget which family right now. Many of the SNAPP descendants migrated from the Shenandoah Valley down to Washington and Greene Counties, TN, where they married into just about all of the Germanna families there. Anyway, when Anna Catherine HABER, wife of Lorentz SCHNEPP (SNAPP) died in 1725 there was a settlement of her estate. Johannes SCHNEPP (SNAPP), Sr. , (1695-1762), signed a note that he had received his share as her son, with a very distinct signature mark. It was a shepherd's crook through an "S" in an oversize "H". This same exact signature was used to sign the ship manifest of the Samuel in 1733 and on the will of John SNAPP, Sr., in Virginia in 1762. The SCHNEPP family were shepherds in Alsace-Lorraine (now Bas-Rhin, France). If you have any samples of these marks or signatures -- you might want to think of posting a copy to the Germanna tree -- I have gotten quite a few comments about how special they are for descendants. In the Thomas line I have John/Hans and Michael and some of their sons. 1. Re: [GERMANNA] Kaifer tree on the master page
    2. George W. Durman
    3. Marilyn, you are correct. I've changed my database and the Tree at Ancestry to reflect her birth in the Colonies. On the master page, she is listed as born in Germany. If she is the daughter of Anna Magdalena Blankenbaker Thomas, a birth in Germany is not possible. Is there anyone on these lists who can edit and correct this information. I don't want to mess with the lines other than Thomas because I don't have enough info to be comfortable with changing facts.
