I have read somewhere that illegitimacy wasn't always a sign of moral failing. In some areas of Germany, people weren't allowed to get married unless they had enough money. You can understand how a pregnancy could occur when two people in love aren't allowed to marry. I don't, however, know the time period so I'm not sure if it falls into the Napoleanic era or not.
