In Chicago, our mayor wants more people to ride bicycles, and a few streets have bike lanes. We also have bike paths along the lake front. Those are separated from auto traffic and I think are much better. I do think folks used to walk more in the U.S. I remember as a child visiting my grandparents on their Michigan farm. Grandma would go for a long walk every evening after dinner and my mother and I would go along. Most of the time Grandpa would drive into town, but Grandma would walk there too. In Chicago my mother walked to the local stores, grocery, butcher, bakery, etc. Of course she didn't do the big grocery shopping I do once a week. She went every few days and bought what she could carry. With the demise of the small local stores, we're all driving, and getting more at one time. Lois
