    1. [GERMAN-LIFE] Reply to British Revocation Announcement
    2. Sorry, if this doesn't exactly pertain to German culture, but I wanted to share a response I received when I forwarded the Britisher's original announcement which was humorous, but unfortunately also true. >>Since receiving the royal announcement, I have a few questions to as the new goverment. 1. Must we salute the queen with all our fingers displayed or can we be selective? 2. How many East Indian doctors will manage our clinics for public health care? 3. Must we relearn how to cook bacon? 4. How can I get a seat in the house of commons and who will count the ballots? 5. Who will be crazy enough to direct traffic the first day we switch to driving on the left side of the roads? 6. Are we permitted to throw bombs on Guy Faulk's day? 7. Do we get tax credit for wasting all those previous dollars on English sport cars? Looking forward to your replies, old chaps, should be simply smashing.                                                  Cheerio,                                              Robert of Springslyshire.>> Shirley in Colorado Springs ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- Return-Path: <[email protected]> Received: from  rly-zd04.mx.aol.com (rly-zd04.mail.aol.com [172.31.33.228]) by air-zd02.mail.aol.com (v76_r1.23) with ESMTP; Fri, 17 Nov 2000 13:48:46 -0500 Received: from  pimout3-int.prodigy.net (pimout3-ext.prodigy.net [207.115.63.102]) by rly-zd04.mx.aol.com (v76_r1.19) with ESMTP; Fri, 17 Nov 2000 13:48:40 -0500 Received: from [209.254.241.98] (A010-0606.CLSP.splitrock.net [209.254.241.98])     by pimout3-int.prodigy.net (8.10.1/8.10.1) with ESMTP id eAHImZi119372     for <[email protected]>; Fri, 17 Nov 2000 13:48:35 -0500 User-Agent: Microsoft Outlook Express Macintosh Edition - 5.01 (1630) Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 12:48:02 -0600

    3. Claire, Since I haven't traveled in Germany, I'm not in the know and wouldn't normally have anything to say, but there do exist some all-American things that were well-received by Pacific Rim recipients. When I was still working for a large corporation, I often had to purchase such things. Though spendy, a big favorite among the Japanese were big myrtle wood salad bowls. Myrtle wood grows only in the Pacific Northwest and is quite beautiful. Japanese visitors always wanted to know where to buy expensive perfumes, usually Joy, to take home to their wives. It always seemed strange to me, but they also wanted to know where to buy cheap American cameras. One European visitor, bought all the green bananas she could carry before leaving this country. There are wonderful selections of products available in places like "Made in Oregon" stores. Canned smoked Pacific salmon is to die for. There must be similar places retailing items native to many other states. Many visitors to the Northwest take home coffee table books about the Mount Saint Helens eruption in Washington State. I'll bet a call to a few gift shops would bring forth some good ideas, because when people are shopping, they often talk about who they're buying for. I'd love to have your challenge! Wish I were going along with you! Carlyine "C. Lisa" wrote: > > The problem is that there is nothing that is "American" anymore -- I ran > into the same problem when I wanted to get gifts for relatives and gene > assistance in Switzerland -- I ended up bringing sheets of stamps and flags > and scarfs. 1. [GERMAN-LIFE] Trans. services?
    2. Hello, list, Wonder if any of you have found someone who will do translations at a reasonable price? The list has been WONDERFUL at helping me with the odd, short translations, but can't impose on them forever, and I will need to do 3 or 4 letters, and hope to get 3 or 4 replies, which I will need trans. from English to German, and German to English. If anyone has found a reasonably priced place, would love to hear about it. Thanks so much. Judy

    1. Re: [GERMAN-LIFE] Christmas Gifts to Germany
    2. Peanut butter is a GREAT favorite, and we've found that Indian art (southwestern US) is a winner. Many Germans are taken with the "old west", and the artifacts of the Southwest (pottery, sand paintings and the like) have been pleasers. We've also, on our last trip, taken artistic wind chimes, the kind that can be packed in flat condition (butterfly motifs, flower motifs, etc.). Picture books of your locale (available from Tourist Bureau or in book sotres) have already been mentioned, but they're good ideas. Dave Ross Denver

    2. I always take peanut butter to Germany with me as a former exchange student from there that lived with me loves it and so does his family. The peanut butter they have there is the natural kind and only at the army bases could they buy our kind. I also take spicy salsa as they haven't been able to get that except in the big cities.
