All this talk about archives led me to the B-W list, where I found this history of B-W at the following address: http://www.pantel-web.de/bw_mirror/history/history_e.htm Very nice. I will search for something similar on Westphalia or Nassau. It included many maps including a map of concentration/work camps in B-W and mentioned some resistance to Hitler. It did not mention Julius Streicher. Since I found the Streicher name in Durchhausen, I have some curiosity about where that infamous person was from. Also it did not say anything about a post-Napoleonic slump. On Tuesday, I will try to document some of that from the church records - the increase in illigitimacy and infant mortality that I observed in the 1820s. Hello With the all changes to the Rootsweb Homepage, the "other communities" have been relegated to 1 line. German-Life was set up originally as one of the "Cultures" lists, separate from all the genealogy lists. New members, esp. if they subscribed directly, probably never knew and older listers might have forgotten. Maybe some re-organization to add German-Life (and German-Food) to the list of German mailing-lists (or a reference there to the Cultures lists) might be in order. B.G. Moin, When these lists were set up the German-Life list and the German-Food list it was for the sole purpose of having a mail list that did not just pertain to genealogy and gave a broader area for conversation about Germany now and before and things that had to do with our culture and not necessarily all genealogy even tho the two go hand in hand. It is listed in the Communities, mail lists that are non-genealogy related. I also set up the Sicilian mail lists, but I no longer have them. Those people are still fighting and they fight over anything or just need to see who can yell the loudest, that was my husband's line. Gail
I have to correct my response -- Gail was correct with the subscribe to German food as being [email protected] I also have to apologize on the transmittal of the link to browse the list -- it was all highlighted when I sent it and deteriorated upon reaching the list -- but you can copy and paste into the URL on your browser. It is hard to find. Index of Germany lists does not provide you with either the German Food or German Life -- you only get "area" in Germany. But if you select the "Threaded Archives" and enter the list name as either "German-Food" or "German-Life" (don't forget the hyphen) then you can browse all the mail by subject and replies to that subject -- month by month. Hi Nancy, I posted some already, did you not get them. The one from last year : Advents, Knecht Ruprecht, Christmas in the Saxony. Weihnachten. I can send them to you privately. You are right. I just joined this list for that very reason! << I'd like to see them also. I think there may be several new list members who joined specifically to hear about Christmas traditions in Germany. We tried to get this discussion going in the Baden Wuerttemberg discussion list, and were referred here. Sorry if we are getting here late, but we are really interested in the information! >>
I too just subscribed to this list from the B-W list and would appreciate a public posting.
