    3. Excellent suggestion, Theola. I have 3 of Diana Krall's CD's, and she is one of my favorites. I like the "When I Look in Your Eyes" CD--mostly older Jazz classics. We always laughed at a Tom & Jerry cartoon my son has, in which Tom (for those of you not familiar, Tom is a cat, Jerry is a mouse) sings an old, old Blues song, "Is you is, or is you ain't my baby", with a hilarious raspy voice. I was delighted to find the very same song on another one of Dianna's CD's--sung quite differently from Tom's version, of course! Check it out. 3. I had trouble finding my grandmother on the Ellis Island page. But after trying the alternative search engine (below) I found her. The Ellis Island web page has her indexed under an incorrect spelling of her first name. This search engine found her because it didn't require a complete first name (only first initial). Also be careful about checking a box for nationality. I checked Danish and my grandfather didn't show up because it says "Dane" on the list. 3. That makes three of us in Deutschland in the month of May, except, of course, those with the privilege of living there. My own trip was from 3 May to 14 May und from Stuttgart to Spaichingen to Konstanz to Chur, Schweiz to Basel, Schweiz to Strassbourg, Frankreich to Heidelberg to Burbach,NRW to Amsterdam und back to Minneapolis. Quite a bit of travelling, but I tried to see everything, with the idea that I will not make it back. Probably could have stayed another five days und taken in Essex, Scotland und Ireland. Now I will have to make another trip to the British Isles. If I go again, I would like to be able to get a bicycle, und probably concentrate on jiust Württemberg. I must have walked 50 k, sometimes because I wanted to. Still I should have left my laptop at home und brought some rollerblades. My favorite place, although I liked Spaichingen, Konstanz, und Chur, was the village of Seitingen-Oberflacht. Church very high on a hill there, with a two meter wall. Reminded me of times when towns were not safe from marauding armies. Cemetery there with many familiar names. The hill gives a good view of the villages. In Oberflacht, there is a memorial with a statue of St. Michael holding up a sword. It is dedicated to the fallen of the two world wars. Again many familiar names, probably every one was a distant relative of my mom. I wanted to get back for a Saturday night or Sunday mass, but did not have the transportation. I am not sure if I could have rented a car. Would I need a special license to drive in Europe? Language und diet were also problematic, but I solved some of the latter by bringing my own food. If all of us were to think alike and follow the same path life would be a very boring replica of Orwell's '1984'. Luckily it's a free country and we can say what we think. From my side I've been quiet because my laptop won't boot and my whole life is on that sucker. So, I'm desparately trying to get off what I can but it looks like I'll have to use it as a second drive somewhere and then grab whatver directories I can and then start over. In the meantime I bought a new laptop with al the latest goodies but there I can't get my USB printer to work. It simply refuses to recognize the sucker. Of course Gateway says it must be the printer. HP is ouit for the weekend and so it goes in lala land. Fred

    3. Hello everyone, I had tried to get info from the Ellis Island site a few times but it was always busy. However, yesterday I decided to try again. I found my Dad who emigrated in 1922 and several other folks from the same town who had emigrated about the same time. I was really pleased I was able to find so much. One thing to keep aware of is the inaccuracy of some of the information on the site. My father was listed as being 3 years old when he was actually 23. The town he was born in has an extra-long name and only the first part of the name was listed as his hometown. I found other misspellings for other people. And of course, as many folks have mentioned, there are many people who are not listed when they should be. I was pleased though, that I found as much as I did. Not once was I kicked off and only my own time constraints were the reason I had to leave the site. Mary Ann > Well, if everyone is bored let us start a new topic... 2. I think all are listed. I found some of my cousins who were American citizens who entered after a visit?? to Switzerland. I also was very lucky to find my Grandmother and father and his brothers who entered in 1905. Now I have to find my grandfather Konrad Engweiler who came over a year earlier. Always a mystery out there to be solved. fun isn't it. Gloria Engweiler Wood

You know in this computer world with all the technology I had wanted my kids and grandkids to see the information on the site and I was in shock when there was nothing but I sat here and cried when Fran sent me the info. My grandfather is the only one in ALL my family that immigrated that came thru Ellis Island. When I say ALL, I am 100% of German heritage... so my mother's side came into earlier ports.. 3. Judy, what was so strange for me was the his ship left Liverpool and the web site didn't even list the name of the ship that left Liverpool in 1909. I was beginning to think my grandfather was a liar but he told the truth all the way and everything that I have checks right on the button on what Fran found in SLC on the film. The film even mentioned his contact in NY and I have the post cards that were sent to my grandfather by this man in NY while he was in detention. At least all the information that I have was correct but it still would have been nice to see it on the web site. Gail
