I have a painting of my grandfather which was done prior to his coming to America at age 21 in 1901. He is wearing a uniform which consists of a tunic style coat with brass buttons up the front. Epaulets on the shoulders with a vertical stripe section down the sleeve with fringe on the bottom of that, the fringe ending about halfway between the elbow and the shoulder. He has a light colored topcoat draped over one shoulder with epaulets. The cuffs have 3 buttons on white stripes and he is carrying white gloves. His hat is very round with a pointed spike on the top. Does anyone have any knowledge of German uniforms in the late 19th century? I would be happy to send anyone a photo of the painting if they thought they could help identify the type of uniform he is wearing. Thanks Roger Stange
