Land Regions of Germany Hannover is in the northern plains. Almost the entire plain lies less then 300 feet above sea level. The wide river valleys,as well as the land along the seacoast,have soft and, fertile soil.Between the valleys are large areas coverd with sand and gravel. These areas are called 'heathlands'. The sand and gravel where deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago. South of Hannover starts the Central Highlands.Two of them -the Harz Mountains and the Thueringer Forest.
