Hi, A lot of time when, the people immigrated ,the immigration officer just wrote down the name he though how it was spelled. A lot of people could not correct him because they didn't spoke the language Also at the time of war, a lot of German Immigrants changed there name to a different spelling .So no one could tell they came from Germany. Karl or Carl is german That name means -(Mann, Ehemann ,freier Mann) (man ,husband, free mann). In english Charles came from Carolus and Charlie is the nickname for Charles. All the names started from the latin language maybe some one knows latin and can let us know more about it.
