    3. Dear Nancy: It would appear that Gottlob Zschau was born illegitimate. I have seen a lot of original baptismal registries from German churches (Lutheran or Evangelical) and it is common that there will be no information on the father if the parents are not married. Sometimes you find a later addition "legitimizing" the child, if the father married the mother later. The entry on the front of the excerpt reads: Baptized: Zschau, Gottlob Born: 28. Sept. 1843 in: Wöllnau Baptized: 1 Oct. 1843 Father: not named in the Registry Mother: Joh. (prob. Johanne or Johanna) Rosine Zschau, no further data Back of the Excerpt: On the left: Other Information relevant to the genealogy of the baptized In the box on the right: for example, information about the father of an illegitimate child, about Godparents who are recognizable as relatives of the baptized, and so on Schubert, Gottlieb, Laborer in Wöllnau Haghaus (?) Carl Christoph Municipal employee in Wöllnau Spinster Christiane, Gottlieb (I suspect that her last name is Gottlieb, her fist name Christiane and that this is a transcription error.)
