    3. I have an Epson Stylus printer and it prints umlauts ok if I use Alt..... to create the Umlauts in my document. I wonder if it has something to do with the rest of the settings. I sometimes change the keyboard to Deutsch, but it takes a lot more concentration to type, I actually learned the 10 Finger system on a German keyboard. I usually use Times New Roman, if that helps any. 3. Easiest way - if you run Windows - find a little program called Character Map. Should be under Accessories, if not, search for charmap.exe. This gives all characters available in the fonts installed on your computer - best to set it to Arial for general usage. You can either use the keyboard combinations indicated in the bottom bar or copy & paste. No need to change your keyboard settings or remember number combinations! HTH Jo Taylor

    3. See... http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/ForeignChar.htm However ... ae for ä oe for ö ue for ü ss for the German character that resembles the letter B (ß) but is used and pronounced like ss, are totally acceptable, in writing letters or using most search engines, or with computers that won't handle the codes. Examples: Bäker or Baeker = a baker Nördlich or Noerdlich = Northerly Für or Fuer = for Groß or Gross = grand, big, tall Remember that the use of ä, ö, and ü (ae, oe, ue), will dramatically alter the pronunciation, use, and meaning of a word.
