I am researching the family of Johann Heinrich Muff, who was born on 27 June 1829 in Hildburghausen - Saxony. His wife, Caroline Schmidt or Deiner/Diener was born 11 Sep 1833 in Weimar - Saxony. Her father was was Adam. They first settled in and around Sheboygan, Wisconsin with many other immigrants from Saxony. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding spelling derivations for the surname Muff? Can't seem to find a clue to narrow my search in Saxony.I believe I have exhausted all obvious American sources and I wonder where to proceed, so I'm looking for new clues. Hi Jim, Sorry to tell you this, but you're in the wrong place. Hildburghausen was not in the Kingdom of Saxony, but rather was one of the Saxon duchies in Thuringia (Thuringen). The dynastic history of the duchies is rather complicated, but the duke of Saxe (or Sachsen)-Hildburghausen exchanged Hildburghausen for Altenburg in 1826 with the duke of Saxe-Meiningen. So, by the time of the baptism you're looking for, the town of Hildburghausen was part of Saxe-Meiningen. Most records, including those you would look for in the Family History Library Catalog, are listed under Thuringen or Thuringia. A problem in looking for parish records is that most in Thuringen have not been microfilmed are usually still with the parish and/or priest/minister. Hope this helps a bit.
