    1. [GERMANKING] travel advice
    2. Shirley Milligan
    3. * Dieter Bravo.... Very good advice. We traveled over 2000 miles in Germany and never made a reservation. Sometimes we were still after dark looking for the right place to stay, but not very often.... We were glad we rented a car and were not on a timetable for trains & busses. Our trip was much more relaxing. Even in Berlin, we parked our car at the place we stayed and took, bus to train station, then train to Berlin (about 20 minutes away) We didn't feel confident driving in heavy downtown traffic (like L.A.) but this worked for us. We would do the same thing next time. (no tours or prearranged reservations) Shirley >old and beautiful. Don't waste your time on the wrong places. Firstly >buy a traveller's guide and look for beautiful places along the road. >Then choose traditional and unpretending hotels in the center of >little romantic timberwork towns.

    1. [GERMANKING] Re: Extracted Church records vs. Photocopied
    2. A. John Birkholz
    3. Good afternoon Nancy, Last week while I was on duty at the local genealogy society, a patron found an item she wanted photocopied from a very large book. She was quite upset that we did not have a large color photocopy machine so that she could get an exact replica of the record which was in an old county tax book. Among other things [I wouldn't go find some tools to take the lid off the photocopy machine] she was unhappy that I didn't know of a machine available in the neighbor-hood that would do what she wanted and that I would not let her take the book out of the library. The point: Even in America some organizations cannot afford the machinery that people would like them to have. You are welcome, A. 2. Diane Smith
    3. Dear Peter and list, Diacritical marks on the Mac are easy. The umlaut is made by pressing "option-u" and then the letter. Other diacritical marks are found in Key Caps in the Apple menu. Simple open key caps and press the "option" key and the marks will appear. Diane Düwell Smith

    3. In trying to figure out why I was given an extract from the church book of my 2nd great-grandfather's baptism and not a photocopy I went back and read the letter I sent to the Wollnau Church and verified that I did indeed ask for a photocopy and not an extract if the record was found. Do you think there is some other reason why they would have provided an extract and not a photocopy? Here's the important part of the letter I sent: Sehr geehrter Herr Pfarrer, Ich erforsche meine Vorfahren und benötige Angaben aus Ihren Registern. (I am researching my ancestors and need information from your records.) Vor- und Familienname: Gottlieb Zschau Geburtsdatum: 28 September 1843 Geburtsort: Wellnan (Wollnau) County of Merseburg Vor- und Familienname des Vaters: Gottlieb Zschau Vor- und Mädchenname der Mutter: Rosena ? Auswanderungsdatum: 03 Juli 1869 New York, New York, USA Religion: evangelisch-lutherisch Bitte suchen Sie in Ihren Geburtsregistern von 1842 bis 1844 nach dem Geburtseintrag dieser Person? (Could you please check your birth registers from 1842 to 1844 for the birth or christening record of this person?) Würden Sie mir bitte mitteilen, ob es möglich wäre, Fotokopien von Ihren Urkunden zu erhalten und was sie kosten? (Would you please inform me if it is possible to obtain photocopies from your records and tell me the cost of such copies?) Wenn Sie die notwendigen Unterlagen nicht besitzen, könnten Sie mir die Anschrift der Dienststelle mitteilen, wo sich die betreffenden Unterlagen befinden? (If you do not have the necessary records, could you provide the address of the place where the records can be found?) Bitte teilen Sie mir mit, was ich für Ihre Dienstleistung zu bezahlen habe und wie ich den Betrag überweisen kann. (Please let me know the cost of your help and how I can pay.) Any ideas? 2. On the Macintosh all the marks are built right into the keyboard. No need to do anything but type them. Just hold down the option key and while doing so type the u and then let go of the option key and type the u again to get the ü (u with umlaut). For ä (a with umlaut) do the same but type the a the second time. ö (o with umlaut) is the same but type the o the second time. This works with e and i too, but German does not need those. Option-s will give you the double s (ß). Keycaps in your Apple Menu will show the entire keyboard of whatever font you're working in. Colin

    2. On the Mac just hold the option key down and type u, then let up the option key and type the letter you want to umlaut. Examples: ä ë ö I don't know if they will work on standard e-mail, but we will find out when I send this. Bob in San Diego

Anyone know how I can teach it? Peter Hi Peter, Sure your Mac does this!!! Here's how to teach yourself! On the Mac: hold the option key as you type 'u'; release both, and retype your desired letter to be umlauted, ie. opt + 'u' (release both), then 'u' gives you the umlauted u; opt + 'u', then 'a' gives the umlauted a; same for umlauted o, i, and y. Option + 's' gives an immediate 'ess-tset' (ss). Enjoy, since this is yet one more thing the Mac does easier and quicker than a PC! 3. Easiest way - if you run Windows - find a little program called Character Map. Should be under Accessories, if not, search for charmap.exe. This gives all characters available in the fonts installed on your computer - best to set it to Arial for general usage. You can either use the keyboard combinations indicated in the bottom bar or copy & paste. No need to change your keyboard settings or remember number combinations! HTH Jo Taylor

    3. See... http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/ForeignChar.htm However ... ae for ä oe for ö ue for ü ss for the German character that resembles the letter B (ß) but is used and pronounced like ss, are totally acceptable, in writing letters or using most search engines, or with computers that won't handle the codes. Examples: Bäker or Baeker = a baker Nördlich or Noerdlich = Northerly Für or Fuer = for Groß or Gross = grand, big, tall Remember that the use of ä, ö, and ü (ae, oe, ue), will dramatically alter the pronunciation, use, and meaning of a word. Time to buy that _best_ German dictionary? You can listen to spoken German via the language link in our Table of Links, at the website below, or purchase a tape or CD-ROM at your local "super" computer store. ;~) Don http://go.to/Hessen

    3. E-mail the gentleman below. He will provide you with a phone number for their fax. Then fax them your credit card number. The phone call is a dollar or two. He will charge your credit card for DM 69.80. When I did it the conversion rate was 1.95 and it came to a total of $35.69. Today the conversion is much better so it will be less. I had my Atlas in a week. Armin.Siebert@sby.adac.de Good Luck Roger BTW, TravelGenie is great but I don't think they carry this particular map. If you want to see the little villages, this map is GREAT!!!
