    1. [GERMANKING] Rauch's in Thuringia
    2. Rick & Lori
    3. Can anyone tell me how to do research of finding my great grandfather and his parents that supposedly were from Sonderhausen? I have found other family members from the 1800's on the Internet and they are in the area's of Gotha, Sonderhausen and Menteroda. It was only ever said that our family was from Sonderhausen. I am told his name was August Karl Rauch and that his parents names were Louise Kleemann and a Fredrick Rauch. Karl was said to have deserted the German Army at age 21, he was maybe born in 1864. I was also told he did receive a pardon from Kaiser Wilhelm. I just don't know where to go, I thought I was on a roll finding my Rauch's and Fritsch's, but it just stops with him. He married in the United States, but her parents were found in Germany with their first two children. Karl's wife's name was Martha Mathilda Fritsch. I am enjoying learning about Germany, can anyone make my enjoyment any greater?

    3. Hi Mary Lou, you're right, there are two places Starkow in Mecklenburg; one is part of 18469 Altenhagen and the other one is part of 18195 Thelkow (numbers are German zip codes). In search for your ancestors, you'd better ask the church parishes for records. Try to write a basic English, it surely would be understood. The next churches and parishes are Velgast and Tessin: Evangelisches Pfarramt Velgast Ernst-Thälmann-Strasse D-18469 Velgast Tel +49 38324-358 Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchgemeinden Tessin, Vilz, Thelkow Pfarramt Rostocker Strasse 5 D-18195 Tessin Tel +49 38205-13243 Did you already try the Mecklenburg-L? Had been working for ten weeks, writing to Trinity Lutheran Church in Indianapolis (where Grandpa and Grandma had been married), a cousin on the Lutheran Cemetery Board in Indianapolis, and many hours on the net to several different genealogy organizations, all trying to accomplish what you did for me in a day. I only got on the net in January and admitedly had much to learn and was very slow. I am 77 years old and practiced my early professional life, as a structural engineer, with a slide rule and hand-cranked adding machine. So computers were a bit scary at first. Thanks for answering all my questions! I was amazed at how many people tried to help me. Some gave useful suggestions but I was still miles from the answers. I only have one area that is not totally clear to me. I think I know the answer but if I'm wrong, please let me know: The emigration index which covers Grandpa says "House #38, son of Kolon Schakel". I interpret that to mean "House #38 in son-of- Kolon Schakel village" because several paragraphs later, it gives Schakel, Carl Friedrich as Grandpa's father living at #38 Kolon. My great grandfather was Carl Friedrich, right? I have extensive information and "Tree" on Dad's side, the Brandts of Cammer - - going all the way back to 1640+/-. Got it from a DISTANT cousin. I was quite surprised to learn that Grandpa Schakel also was from the church in Frille. All my gggg-grandfather Brandts were baptized there. I had the privilege of attending church there in 1994. We stayed in Weitersheim about 2 1/2 miles east of Frille and walked to church on Sunday morning. Weitersheim, Papinghausen, Cammer, and Aminghausen are all villages in a 2 mile radius of Frille and all attended the church in Frille. Frille is roughly northeast of Minden. According to my great uncle Louis C. Brandt (in an interview I had with him in 1957 - - he was born in 1869), Cammer was a 1 1/2 hour walk from Minden and a 2/12 hour walk from Bueckeburg. I'm reasonably certain that Bueckeburg is south of Frille and east of Minden. I'm also sure he was correct on that distance, since he courted and married a young lady from Bueckeburg. He also told me that in the War of 1866, half of the congregation lived in and fought for Prussia and the other half of the congregation lived in and fought for Schaumburg-Lippe. I hope to be able to share what I have about the Cammer-Frille area and my branch of the Brandts with anyone interested. I've made one attempt at doing this with LDS but haven't had the ability to get through their red tape. I plan to share this note with several net-friends who have been helpful in my search, by sending copies to them. Again many, many thanks for your wonderful help.
