Have you been to an LDS Family History Center yet? Some of the Lippe-Detmold church registers are on film in their library. You can probably find indexes to your own locality using FamilySearch's library search engine. Find it at LDS. Good hunting! Bob RKluckhohn@aol.com

Norm, You might begin with Don Watson's web site http://goto.hessen and select the LINKS. He has about everything you might need for your search. If you have any idea of the port or year he landed, you might do a surname search at cimorelli http://208.249.158.172/safe/shipmenu.htm which will give you the NARA index films to search for ship passenger lists. . Or you might find him with a surname search in the volumes at http://istg.rootsweb.com the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild. Norm My first suggestion would be to change your spelling. I find 16 families in the German telephone directory under the name of Hellwig, but none under Helwig. I know a family here in America that went by the name of Helwig and I believe it was changed from Hellwig when they came to this country for obvious reasons. Good luck Roger Stange
Hi, I am new to this list, so if I violate any protocol, pardons in advance.... I am researching the Helwig family. The earliest I have is August J. Helwig, b. Sept. 1839, who apparently emigrated to America from Lippe-Detmold. Can anyone point me in the appropriate direction to find more information on him? Thanks in advance, Norm Le Blanc _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
Gloria After a little further searching I have found a Jörg Sander at Feldstr. 22 in Detmold. I'd give him a try. I'll bet it is the same one!! Gloria This is really far fetched but I don't know how desperate you are to find your person. 23 years ago I had a cousin living in Pivitsheide. We visited them and they had employed a young teacher from Bad Salzuflen to spend the day with us and be our interpreter. His name was Jorg Sander. I have checked the directory and don't find him there today but do find a Gerald Sander. I would be willing to bet he is related to Jorg and could tell you his whereabouts.......most likely just in a neighboring village. Anyway, considering Jorg taught in that area I would think he would be very likely to know the whereabouts of your Mr. Strehlau. I realize this is a thin lead, but in genealogy often times the thinnest of threads leads us to the pot of gold!!! Hello everyone, Many years ago my cousin hired a man named Helmuth (or Helmut) Strehlau to do some Stammfolge of our ancestors in Schale & Sonneborn. After the works were completed my cousin & Mr. Strehlau corresponded off & on, but nothing has been heard from him in quite a while. My cousin is wondering if the gentleman has passed away. Would anyone happen to know of Mr. Strehlau? Besides doing genealogy research, he was a teacher at a math/science school at Bielefeld & then lived at Bad Salzuflen. If he is still alive he would be quite elderly. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I have checked the German phone book site at http://www.teleauskunft.de There are several Helmut Strehau's listed, but none in Bad Salzuflen. Gloria (Landwer) Scott
To Rootsweb. I was wondering why I'm not getting the usual e-mail that come across the lines. Where everyone is looking for information about there relatives and getting answers from different people. Thanks Lynne ldholtz@aol.com
Hallo Jerry, unfortunately this is a mobile phone number belonging to the D1 mobile phone net. The user can sit anywhere in Germany. The easiest thing to reach him will be ... to phone him. You have his number. Having just completed a search using the German online directory I came up with a name and phone number but no address. I searched the directory using the surname HUCKENSTEIN as the only search input. I was returned only one name: HUCKENSTEIN, Joachim phone number:01 71 27 46 47 2 Can anyone get me the address that goes with this phone number? HUCKENSTEIN is the surname of my great great grandmother who emigrated to the US in 1857 with my great grandmother. As I searched the whole of Germany and only one listing was found this Joachim just might be a related to my ancestors. Thanks for any help you may be able to give in locating the address or how to contact him, other than by phone. That is an impossibility with me being deaf. Jerry Dittman Boonsboro, MD

I must have missed your original query but I am very interested because i just discovered that my great grandfather was from Sondershausen. Also just found a wonderful website for Sondershausen. If you will e-mail me I will give you the address. I have it bookmarked and dont have it handy. My family name from Sondershausen and nearby Rossla is FROEHLICH. Betty in Wisconsin
Thank you all so much for your help. I am reading about the history behind Thuringia now and it is helping me to see things better. To get a picture in your mind of where an ancestor came from is just wonderful. I am new to this and really appreciate all the responses I get. I didn't even think about there being an encyclopedia on-line. I've even received an address for the right church in Sondershausen! I hope I did not take too much time from important e-mails, just am really thankful for you all. Sincerely, Lori

I am searching in the Radevormwald and Huckeswagon areas for any relatives of Ewald or Julius Ebbinghaus. Ewald (my grandfather) married Amelia Huckenbeck in 1876. They emigrated to Canada in about 1888. Glenna May Pfahler Langford.
Hello Frank My name is Kevin and I was born and raised in Philadelphia. If they lived in the city, and you can't get any other leads from Immigration records and such, you might want to try the City Directory. It was a listing of people and addresses much like a phone book, only in the days before there were phones. It was published every year and goes back well into the 1700's with virtually everyone listed (in alphabetical order.) If you look up the name Hummel you'll find anyone by that name living within the city limits. The listing will include their usually include their occupations. Often, immigrants who were related would settle in the same area (you may even find them at the same address,) and using maps of the city from that era you can determine whether any of the Hummels that you find are listed in that same area. This will give you a place to start. If you then trace them forward and backward in time you can discover when they entered the book and when they exited the book. Their entry may correspond to an immigration date (within a few years), and their exit may correspond to a death record. From this gathering of information you can check city archives for birth, marriage, and death records to see what other names show up. You may get a match at any point in this process with the names you already know. The Directories are available on microfilm at the Main Library on Logan Square in Philadelphia along with census records. I found over 80% of my ancestors with this method because I found one person, and their corresponding death record and I literally hit paydirt. It turns out there were 28 relatives buried in the same grave site with him, as was the custom of the time. Hope I haven't bored you and I hope this helps. Kevin M. Still looking for the Bernhardt KOEPPE family who came (from Germany) to Wisconsin in the late 1860's. Bernhardt had his wife, Dorathea, and a son, Bernhardt, Jr., and then a daughter Hedwig (Hattie), and a son William were born in this country, and last but far from least, my husband's Grandfather, Louis Arthur Koeppe, who was born in August 1870. Does anyone have these people in their ancestry? Thank you............June D. Koeppe
On 18 Sept. 1832 the marriage of Petrus WEGENER/WAGNER, son of Andrice WEGENER/WAGNER and Mariae Kiefer took place at Kirf, Germany. His bride was Joannetha Weber, daughter of Antonii Weber and Margaretha Elends. Does anyone have further information on this family? Please write to Patti Laessig at anaquea@dwave.net
