Hello.. I recently received some Mennonite Church records which indicated that my g.g.grandfather Friedrich J. Moritz was born in Reichenburg 14 Apr.1862 . He was the son of Friedrich Moritz and Florentina Grabowski and was not baptized into the Mennonite Brethren Church until 30 Mar 1878 . He married Florentina (b.6 Jan 1842 ; daughter of Jakob Grabowski) on 20 June 1860. I would like to know where Reichenburg is and also if anyone recognizes this family ...........any connections ? There are several Reichenburg "towns". 1. In the state of Saxony - north of Dresden 2. Czech Republic - now called Liberec - north of Prague 3. Rheinland Pfalz - south of Koblenz 4. Brandenburg - northwest of Berlin near the Polish border 5. three in Bavaria; a. southwest of Wurzburg b. near the Czech border towards Austria - south of Deggensdorf c. near the Czech border - a few miles north of Deggensdorf 6. Baden - Wuert. - a little southeast of Heibronn , north of Stuttgart I found the above information on: http://www.expediamaps.com/ Of the above, I would probably pick the those in the Rheinland or Bavaria. Although, I don't think you should any of them out. Supposedly, Mennonites originated in Zurich (1523) -- then through Germany and Netherlands. Of this original group, a few survived in isolated parts of Switzerland, Frisia and in the Palatinate. Also, in the 18th century the Swiss Brethern went to the Rhineland. In the first half of the 19th century, Mennonites from Switzerland and southern Germany (probably Bavaria ?) went to Ohio and to the west into Missouri. I am not a Mennonite researcher; so perhaps some other researcher in the group could shed more light on your problem. Marilyn

Thanks to all those that responded. Particlularly to Dr. M. Plamer who wrote about it becoming a suburb of Berlin in 1677. He refered to the Dorotheenst"adtische Kirche and the subsequent mergers of the church. The original church was used both by the Lutherans and the reformed Lutherans. In 1831 it was merged into the Evangelishe Kirch der Union. Karen Whitmer pinpointed the area as now the center of Berlin. So much for being out in the suburbs in 1677. In checking the LDS Library catalog under German, PreuBen, Brandenburg, Berlin, Church Records, I found a vast number of microfilms for the original and subsequent churches. So a real happy hit and I thank all who took the trouble to give inputs. John

It is a recreation of old German script which they say you can use to learn to read pre-WWII German handwriting. When I did a search engine search using the single word "Dorotheen" almost all the hits were in German indicating some significance to the name.
