My ancestor Jean-Adam Thofft was born about 1758 in Thuringia, Germany. He came to Canada with the British Army during the Revolutionary war. When his regiment left Canada, he deserted and remained in Quebec province. He married Josephte St.-Louis in Nicolet, Quebec on February 14, 1791. They later changed their name to Dufft and then to Duff. Jean-Adam Thofft died in Becancour, Quebec ion November 7, 1826. Who were his parents? Did he have any brothers and sisters. Are there other descendents of his parents in Germany or elsewhere in the world. Any information will be appreciated? Thanks Adele Duff

Hello Charles, I don't have any specific information, but your surname NAUNDORF is similar to my friends maiden name NONDORF. She said her family came from Holland and were considered 'black Dutch' because of their coloring of black hair and dark eyes. Hope this is helpful. Palintines does refere to a region of Germany but our mostly English imigration officers/boat captains decided if you came from Germany you where probably Palentine. I recommend anyone interested to do a search on " The Great Palatine Migration" very good and also the book "The Lutherans in North America" Edited by E. Clifford Nelson it gives a good account of what our ancestors went through. My suggestion would be to go to http://users.rootsweb.com/~deuhes/Hessen/towns.htm and choose Site #1. For the town name, choose Eisenach, then for the country, Germany. Scroll down to where you have a choice between Daitch-Mokotof soundex and precise spelling, and choose the latter. Note the coordinates of Eisenach. Now look up the word Breis, but this time choose soundex. Look for coordinates that are similar to those of Eisenach. Perhaps you will find a small town near there that resembles "Beirheis." This is in response to a much earlier message from Kay Haltmach re: the name "Beyreis". One branch of my family is from Saxe-Weimer-Eisenach but I have not been able to find their town of origin or the original spelling of the name. Currently "Beirise" is used but earliers documents include such spellings as Beihreis, Beireis, Berrice, Byreis and some others. The original ancestor in my line was John Christopher Beihreis who emigrated in May 1861 and settled in Darke county Ohio. Robert August DIETZ emigrated to U.S. 1882 from Bockwa bei Zwickau, Saxony leaving behind parents August Dietz, Maria BAUER, brother Ernst, unknown sister. Lutheran Pfarrer at Zwickau-Dom has graciously informed me there are no records of my family there. My question is how to find the Parish that might have served Bockwa in 1800 and would the parish records now be held at the Dom and already searched by the Pfarrer. I know that LDS has filmed in Zwickau, but it will be quite some time before I am able to access their films so am just looking for information on the most likely 1800 Parish for Bockwa ( which is now a part of Zwickau.) I have Kirchner ancestors but do not know where they are form. Is that a very common name? I have an August Kirchner who came to Michigan in about 1850. He was an engineer of some sort.
