I am searching for Charles Bull supposedly from Mecklenburg, Germany. - (born 1832 & immigrated before 1865 to Zilwaukee, Saginaw County, Michigan.) Is "Charles" the anglicized version of a German name? If it is, what would be the original German name? Shirley Sampson mailto:[email protected]

There are a number of books on this topic and German emigration in general at http://users.rootsweb.com/~deuhes/Hessen/ships.htm ;~) Don
Everything you ever wanted to know about writing German letters is found at http://users.rootsweb.com/~deuhes/Hessen/payforit.htm and at http://users.rootsweb.com/~deuhes/Hessen/archives.htm Your letter needs to be in the German language for best results. Before 1871 (generally) it goes to the church archives, thereafter to the municipal archives. You can find all the addresses at the web site. Problems? Just email me. ;~) Don ----- Original Message ----- From: Neva & Donna Muehlenbein <[email protected]> I don't know a thing about writing to a foreign country. Can I write in English or do I have to send it in German?
Thanks so much for your help in finding where Reelkirchen is. Now I would like to know how I go about writing a letter to get information about my gggrandfather Frederick Muehlenbein. I don't know a thing about writing to a foreign country. Can I write in English or do I have to send it in German? Do I write to the mayor or a County clerk? I know they are called something else in German. Any help would be appreciated. Neva Muehlenbein.
I, too, have had no luck with Nat. papers from Ohio, as it only states that my John Hoffman born 1854 in Germany renounces his allegiance to the Emperor of Germany in 1883. In that time period, what area was William I Emperor of - all of Germany? Thanks for your help. Lee Smith [email protected]
I answered the original query and my answer went directly to that person; however, thought this might be of interest to the list. -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: PATRICIA S. SMITH, 104120,515 To: INTERNET:[email protected], INTERNET:[email protected] Date: 09/17/1999 3:57 PM RE: [GERMANKING] [Fwd: CIMBRIA] Re pix of ships; Try the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic Ct. It has a lot of pix and information . It charges, depending on the amount of research required. Address: 75 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic, 06355. Phone: 860-572-071. E-mail, http://www.mysticseaport.org. I got a picture of a painting of a our Charlotte Reed from the Bath Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine, which owned a painting of the ship. I don't have its address readily available, but I found the place via telephone information. Pix was abt. $10. Both museums were most helpful. Nearly all sailing ships were painted. I've been astounded at the amount of information is available abt. shippings, their sailings, and so. The Charlotte Reed, which had sailed with my ancestors from Bremen in 1848, had been built in Bath, Maine. The museum had the surviving (after a fire, naturally) records of the shipbuilder. Unfortunately the logs of the Charlotte Reed did not survive, although some logs of other ships do. Another source of maritime information is the Maritime Museum in Newport News, Va. Not sure what it might have, but it's worth a try. It's a very large and wonderful museum. pat smith

I have the Declaration of Intent on my great-grandfather, done in Flint, Michigan in 1860, and the only information on it was that he was forswearing allegiance to the Prince of Schwarzburg Sondershausen of whom he had been a subject. I think the content depends on the state and who took it. Some required more information than others. I guess my next step is to request the actual naturalization papers from NARA at Chicago. I hope they have them! Patricia LeBeau, stonewalled again

Good Evening everyone, I think I've missed out on something somewhere. I have a copy of my great-great-grandfather's naturalization papers, but it says nothing about port of arrival. What is a Declaration of Intent, what type of information does it have, and how do I go about finding one on my great-great-grandfather? Thank you. This list has been a fountain of knowledge for me. Eden Kuhlenschmidt > >Hello, > >On his Declaration of Intent, one of my ancestors has the Port of Detroit >listed as the port of entry to the US from Prussia in June of 1853.

Still looking for information on Zacharias Ulbricht and John, his brother , both came from Loma on der Lina Saxony Altenburg in 1851 or 1854. His father was Michael Ulbricht & mothers name was Justina Hoefler. When in Germany in 94, I saw some Ulbrichts listed in the Nuremburg telephone directory, but could not get any reply from them by mail and didn't have time to call at that time. Also a Ulbricht has a factory making nutcrackers, but no help from them. Kind of a surly bunch. Also a long distant relative named Emerick came to America in 1774 from the only place we have listed, Hesse Castle. Any information about either? I know Walter Ulbricht has a bad name, but far as I know, nothing to do with me. I served in the Navy and Army both in w/w 2, but never got to Germany. Maybe some money was coming to my Grandfather and no one there wants to admit any relative here in the U.S. ?????? [email protected]
