Seeking Gottfried (Godfrey, Godfred) HEINIG (1835-1916) who emigrated to United States around 1861 departing from Bremen and, according to notes my grandmother made, was shipwrecked on "Sandy Island." (Sanday Isle in Northern Scotland?) Godfrey eventually arrived Baltimore (not clear whether on the same ship) in summer 1861. In September 1861 he enlisted for three-year service in the Civil War (private, F Company, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry) and earned citizenship. Settled near Millersburg, Ohio after the war but originally went to New Philadelphia, Ohio. The family lived in Langenleuba-Niederhain (then Saxony now Thuringia) east of Altenburg, near Leibzig. Gottfrieds father Christoph Heinig died there 1872. Gottfrieds mother was Sophia BERGER. From ship passenger lists I have found a few other Heinigs (sometimes HEINICK) from this area and also the name KRATZSCH. Gottfried married Ernestine Kratzsch, apparently after the war. They do not appear to have emigrated together, but much is unclear. Ernestines father was A. Kratzsch. Ernestine had a brother Bernhard captured at the Battle of Gettysburg and taken to Andersonville prison, where he died. I am trying to find anything at all about this group of people called Kratzsch, Heinig, and Berger. Many thanks. Colin Talcroft ([email protected])
Dear Curt, I have an indirect connection with PRÜSSNER from Hagen, are they possibly related to your PRUSZNER? I also have DREYER who are connected with the WEHRMANN family of Almena. My own family is from Bavenhausen and Rentorf, related to one of the RIEKE families there. Bob KLUCKHOHN Vancouver, WA.
Seeking information about ancestors and descendants of Johann Gustav Hentshel, "b. 20 Feb 1848 in Gnaschwitz (alternatively recorded in family records as Graschwitz and Gnauschwitz) near Bautzen, Saxony". Another family member says he might have been born in Goerlitz. Part of the confusion could be due to handwriting. Johann Gustav's father was Johann Carl Gottlieb Hentschel. His wife was Johanna Augusta Schuster-Boehme Hentschel, daughter of Fredericke Charlotte Schuster and adopted by her husband Mr. Boehme. --Mary Ann
Thanks to everyone who sent me help to find Funfbronn. I was in Germany last year for a short visit and was actually south of it, but I can see the countryside in my mind! Kathleen
[Deutsche Fassung steht unten] My great-grandfather, Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Fürchtenicht (b. 29 December 1869 in Seesen/Harz), emigrated to the U.S. in 1889. According to the story, he sailed as a member of the ship's crew, not as a passenger, as he was a "Schlosser." The ship is said to have sailed from Bremerhaven to New York. I also have a letter addressed to him in Bremerhaven in Spring 1889 and several addressed to him in New York State (northeast of Albany) in late summer/early Fall 1889. Would one expect to find a crew member on a passenger list? If not, where would one look to find out what ship he sailed on and when it arrived, etc.? Are there any sort of immigration records that I could look at? If so, what sort of records are there and where are they? I assume he was an apprentice in Seesen, but know that he worked in Hannover for several months after completing his apprenticeship. He may have spent some time in Braunschweig. In some of the letters before his departure, his sisters write of attempting to obtain some sort of "Schein" in order to be exempted from military service, but it couldn't be issued by authorities in Seesen, as he was no longer a resident of the city. What sort of document would this have been? It is also possible he may have emigrated secretly, or wihout permission. I'm uncertain, if he originally intended to stay in the U.S. permanently. In some letters, his sisters write about him returning to Germany (just to visit?). After several years in New York State (near Hoosick Falls), he purchased land in northern Wisconsin and farmed there. He never returned to Germany. Would he have been a criminal upon return to Germany? Thank you. Vielen Dank Alan Furchtenicht
Regina, First you will find that Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach means a town in Saxony somewhere between Weimar and Eisenach. My grandfather's town is Schlossvippach. Many people from that area left from Bremen and arrived in Baltimore. Mine did in 1864. A cousin of mine found the family name in Schlossvippach listed in the LDS files. It was a kind of census. Also the passenger list of his ship found in Germans to America. They are listed by dates, and their Vol. 2 (ISBN 0-8420-2316-X) covers ships from May 24, 1851 - June 5, 1852. (Vol. 3, ISBN-8420-2317-8 covers June 5, 1852 - Sept. 21, 1852. Vol. 4, ISBN-8420-2318-6 Sept. 22, 1852 - May 28, 1853.) Remember they often Anglesized their names, like Karl to Charles. If you run across a Franz or Karl Schubert in your search of the area, I'd like to hear from you. This is as far as I've traced mine. >Hello! > >I have been searching for the ship my ggg grandfather Gotlieb Wittekind, his >wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters came over on. I am trying to find anything that I can about my ggGrandfather. His name was Fred Wille, and he married Emily Werner in Hanover, Germany. I need everything because all I have is the names. I think they settled in Crystal Lake, IL. Appreciate any help I can get. Wayne Wille
Hello , I just subscribed and don't know if I'm in the right place or not. I am researching Jakob Grabowski , father of Florentina Grabowski (b. 6 Jan 1842). Florentina married 20 June 1860 to Friedrich Moritz (b. 19 June 1841, Reichenberg,Ger.). This line is said to have noble connections. They immigrated to NYC Aug 1875 and settled in the mid-west. Jakob might or might not be the same Jakob Grabowski who was awarded the Polish Order of the Virtuti Militari. Anything look familiar ? Thank you, Malinda Jones
Will the party that previoulsly e-mailed me about the name Zileke please get in touch with me again. I found a number of ZILEKEs on LDS films 1125246 and 1180434 which are computer listings. 112546 had listings under the Dorotheen, Berlin, and the Sankt Salvator,Danzig churches. 1180434 had listings under the Dortoheen, Berlin and the Kolmar, Posen churches. These computer listings are hard to use as they are not strictly alphabetical. But once you get into the "Z's" I would suggest you just scroll along as I did looking for my ZAELKEs. I would be glad to look at my notes about birthdates, christenings, and parents names if you care to e-mail me privately. Hope this might be of some help to you. John
Hello, My gr grandmother was born in Unter Glottertahl, Amt Waldkirch, Baden Germany. Given this location, and the fact that she was a Catholic, where would I begin to search for the church/village records of her birth, baptism, etc.? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Rosemary <[email protected]>
Try http://istg.rootsweb.com/ You may have to spend some time searching, but it will be worth the effort. I was able to find ancestors listed on a ship's manifest, leaving Glasgow for Nova Scotia. Hello! I have been searching for the ship my ggg grandfather Gotlieb Wittekind, his wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters came over on. They were from Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Germany. They put an ad in the local newspaper in March of 1852 stating their intent to come to U.S. I have searched and searched. I believe they arrived June 1852. Any suggestions on where to look or write would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Regina Wittekind Potaracke
Barbara, supper can wait!! Here is what I found in the Strassburger book------ page 492, 493, 494 List 187 C At the courthouse in Philadelphia, Wednesday, the 4th of October 1752. Present: Joshua Maddox, Esquire The Foreigners whose Names are underwritten, Imported in the Ship Neptune, Capt John Mason, from Rotterdam and last from Cowes in England, did this day take and subscribe the Oaths and Affirmations to the Government in the usual Form. No. 169. (the whole ships list is then shown, including the following of interest to you) Henry (X) Lipps As I understand it, the X means that's how he signed his name. If you would like a copy of the 3 pages, just send me your mail address and I will make copies of the pages and send them to you. Also in the same book, on pages 84, 86, 87 there is a listing for "Hendrich Lips, age 25" on the ship Adventure, 23rd Sept 1732. If either of these are of interest to you, just let me know and I will send them off to you. Good luck! I found ancestors on the 1920 census and the parents were listed as coming from "German Poland" and the native language was "Polish". Any ideas as to what this would mean? They would be from the mid to late 1800's. Thanks Judy C.
Could anyone help me locate the town of Fuenfbronn which was in Wuertenburg, Germany in the Black Forest region until at least the 1860's? My ggrandmother was born there. I have not been able to locate it and suspect it was incorporated into another city or maybe just disappeared. But I would like to know it's location. I have visited various map locations which I've seen on this site and I've had no luck. I can't be positive of the spelling but that is how my ggrandmother spelled it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Kathleen
