And in Macintosh go to Key Caps and try: ö = option(alt) + u then o ü = option(alt) + u then u ä = option(alt) + u then a the first u is to set the umlaut. Hi everyone I noticed some talk about typing German characters. For those of you who use Macintoshes it's even easier. No need for ASCI codes and the like. To get u with an umlaut type u with the option key held down, then let go and type u again. The other letters work the same way. For an a with an umlaut type u with the option key held down, then let go and type a. For o with an umlaut type u with the option key held down, then let go and type o. Option and s will give you the German double s. Remember, however, that sending by e-mail on any platform will sometimes garble these. On Web pages you can ungarble accented characters in many cases in Netscape by going to the character encoding choice in (I think) the Options Menu and being sure that it is set to Western (or something like that)--usually the first choice. Hope this helps. Colin Talcroft (researching HEINIG and KRATZSCH from around Langenleuba-Niederhain (near Chemnitz and Altenburg) and MOLDENHAUER and STEHLING (from Berlin). Anybody know anything about a ship called the "President Smidt"? Ancestors (Kratzsch) arrived on this ship from Bremen in New York in July 1854. Also, anybody know anything general about ship ROUTES? I have a HEINIG that left Bremen 1861 and arrived in Baltimore in the same year but is supposed to have been shipwrecked on "Sandy Island" Only thing that makes sense is Sanday Isle in northern Scotland, but would boats have gone to America NORTH of the British Isles? Any thoughts appreciated.

Neva - If you're using Windows, look for the little program Character Map - should be somewhere under 'Accessories'. This will give you the numeric keypad codes for all the various characters in all the fonts on your system. All the best Jo > Can anyone tell me how to write the German Alphabet with my keyboard? Hello Everyone! Had to share this information on umlates with everyone. I sure that I'm not the only one using umlates for the first time. I asked my computer club list about umlates too! In response I received a informative site that gave much more information Umlates codes. If you print the site, there are 17 pages of ASCII-ISO codes. What ever the language, I think you'll find the Umlate code here. Keep a short list printout by my keyboard now for quick reference. Add characters you need to your 'short list'. The complete list is at <http://www.bbsinc.com/iso8859.html> Use the 3-digit decimal reference number as xxx in the ALT-0xxx format. Enjoy Linda [email protected]
Hello list members, I am going to unsubscribe from this list for about 10 days while I go on a trip for business. I won't be checking messages, so if any of you send me any personal e:mail, I will see it when I get back and answer you then. Keep me in mind if you discuss WITT, KRUEGER, SCHMIDT, MARTENS, FINZ, OEHMICH/OEHMIG surnames and/or the towns of Gross Buetzin, Hohen Luckow, Danneborth, Axelhof ... while I'm gone! I enjoy this list very much. Good luck to all of you with your researching. See you again when I get back! debbie in california, usa [email protected]
Here's how, As you hold down the Alt key, type on your numeric keypad the decimal code for the character (this is in Wordperfect and Netscape) ä= 132 Ä= 142 ö= 148 Ö= 153 ü= 129 Ü= 154 ß= 225 and £= 156 (The English Pound Sterling symbol) If it doesn't work I've got the ANSI number code that'll do the same thing. Johannes Froebel-Parker wrote: > this is a wonderful site..very informative. Didnt the grand dukes of Weimar > have a castle in Altenburg? I think, it was the castle of the dukes of Sachsen-Altenburg. These dukes had all their own palaces. About two dozen towns in Thurigia had been princely residencies. Therefore there are loads of castles and belvederes in Thuringia and even in smaller cities you can see still today noble opera houses. > I remember from our family history that they > hosted a childrens fold festival there in the 19th century for F. well,i went to that website-jargon junkies shouldn't write for the masses-came away with strong desire to search a few films and no idea how to choose and order one for my family name of mummelthei. but i will check the lds catalog on my next visit and see if its any clearer on there.
this is a wonderful site..very informative. Didnt the grand dukes of Weimar have a castle in Altenburg? I remember from our family history that they hosted a childrens fold festival there in the 19th century for F. Froebel and kindergarten groups from the neighboring villages. Hello List! If your like me with German heritage and no knowledge of the language or history, you might want to take a look at this site. And, if you have a polish background too then go to the authors home page and find information on Poland. http://www3.adnc.com/~lynnd/vuword.html Enjoy!
