Short summary: http://www.staremapy.cz/ is a great site for old maps of the now Czech Republic. I followed the link Bill supplied below, but it just made me all jealous because it appears to have maps only for a region of Moravia (correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm interested in western Bohemia. So I decided to look around. First I thought I would try the Plzen state archives site, which you can find at: http://www.soaplzen.cz/ (let your browser/google translate from Czech to English on all these.) No nice maps there that I could see though. At the lowerright, there's a map where you can select a particular regional archive. Selecting Tachov (Tachau) in my case, I come to State District Archives Tachov at http://www.soaplzen.cz/cs/soka-tc Again, no maps that I could see, but it does have some useful tools, such as town names (to help find Czech-German equivalents) and lists of which records it does hold. But, If you go to the main Plzen site and follow the "For Genealogists" link, then on the left there are selections including: For the public -> Links -> Digital Maps and Mapping Applications. From there, following Old and Historic Maps of Bohemia Moravia and Silesia which takes you to: ta da! http://www.staremapy.cz/ If you like old maps, that is a really cool site that I want to explore more. I followed the Collections of old maps in CZ link which leads to another page and here, I followed the I. Military Survey link. which explains the history of these maps from the 1700s. There if you click on the Bohemia/Cechy link, you are presented with a big grid-covered map of Bohemia. From here, just click on the particlar area you are interested in, grid #136 is my case, near Tachov and Plan. From there pan and zoom away! The II Military maps are from the early 1800s and the III Military are from the late 1800s. The earlier maps are at a scale of 1:28800, or a little better than 5 inches to the mile. It won't tell you which field belonged to your ancestor, but the individual houses (unnumbered) are drawn on there. Pretty cool! Enjoy!
