    3. >From what I have read, GRAMPS is unlike GENI.COM in that the database is stored locally on your PC harddrive, not on the internet. Once installed, no access to the internet is required. Storage for data is relatively inexpensive these days, but of course you are responsible for having backups of the data either on another external drive, and/or a remote storage unit/server as well for extra insurance. It will import/export in GEDCOM format. I had never heard of it before. http://gramps-project.org/ Gramps is a free downloadable genealogy program that has all the features used by professionals. It also has a simple, intuitive interface to make it easy enough for hobbyists. Store names, dates, events and photos, and Gramps will index and organize it all into a visual family tree. You can even browse your data geographically using the map feature. It started out like Gramps many years ago and is easy to work with. You do not burden your own computer's memory bank, you have it stored for posterity at the GENI site. Now there are 44 Million entries available and when family matches are made, they send notification, so you can tie into the banks of already researched family lines. Here is an explanation how to get started. The individual profile site has permanent storage for pictures, clippings, events, copies of documents which are archived permanently and your descendants can follow.
