Hello list and a happy new year to my favorite group of researchers! To respond to those wonderful people who have already helped Mr. Reichl, and to Mr. Reichl himself, I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and can tell you that McHenry, Illinois is two counties west from Cook County (where Chicago is). McHenry is in McHenry County which, even now, is a good hour and a half, maybe more, from Chicago. (A county is like a "Kreis" in Germany.) (I have learned the hard way that not all towns are in the county of the same name.) If I were looking into the Censuses, I would focus on Cook, Lake, and McHenry Counties in Illinois. To get from Cook to McHenry County, you have to go through Lake County. It may be that people stopped off along the way. I have ancestry.com and can do a look up if needed. For the film, it's a long shot, but I would suggest checking with the Library of Congress. The way to register a copyright for a work was to fill out a form and send it along with a copy of the work to the Library. They have an on-line search function that could be useful. The University of Illinois Library also has HUGE holdings, an on-line card catalog, and a searchable image base. I would also try the Newberry Library in Chicago, which also has a searchable card catalog. Finally, I would suggest the Google images database. By the way, I have just discovered Google Earth. What an amazing tool for researchers! It was more fun that any of the Christmas presents I got, and the basic service is free. I flew around Mount Everest last night!
