This is a very good list, thank you, but something is very strange here. It might have happened in recent transcription, because you must realize that the passenger list for this ship by the name of "Ems" is dated 1886. They show Galicia, which is correct, as it was part of Austria Hungary, but at the same time, they show Bohemia and Moravia under "Czech Republic". At that time the Czech Republic did not exist, Bohemia and Moravia were provinces of Austria-Hungary. Czechoslovakia was created in 1918 and the Czech Republic was created 1993. I can easily see the confusion this creates among the descendants of Austrian Hungarian citizens to establish their ethnicity. Equally, on this list are a few "Romanians" from Temeswar which was also Austria Hungary, i.e. the Austrian Crown colony Banat, which was predominantly settled by Germans from the Imperium. If they captured American immigrants according to such interpretations, a lot of ethnic Germans arrived here under the label as being Poles, Hungarians, Romanians, Russians, Czechs, Serbs, Croats and Slovenians.... and perhaps others. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that the researcher identifies his ancestry using old letters or documents to establish their ethnic background. If they used the same system in the census here later, one might guess that there were far more "German" immigrants in this country than what the demography shows. Thanks for that correction/clarification, Aida.
