Harriet E. Rasnick I think you will find a lot of information about the Hessians if you will click on the the site below. Lou _http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Hessian.html_ (http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Hessian.html)
He stayed in American after the war, married, had children, Anglicized his name to Rasnick, etc. I was hoping that, if I could find someone in Germany with that same surname, they might be able to help with the genealogy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laurence Krupnak" <Lkrupnak@erols.com> To: <GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 5:57 PM Subject: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] Surname Rührschneck > > >> From: "Harriet E. Yes, he was a Hessian soldier. We have information once he arrived in America, but the European connection is lost. Can you give me some clues as to where I should look? The German phone directory http://www.dastelefonbuch.de/ lists 34 entries (businesses and residences) containing that name, concentrated in the northern half of Bavaria (Nuremberg etc.). Either the name originated in that area or someone moved there from elsewhere and had descendants. The phone directory lets you plot the results on a map! Harriet, In the Tutwiler Collection at the Birmingham Public Library I find the following: In Mercenaries from Ansbach & Bayreuth, Germany, who remained in America after the Revolution by Clifford Neal Smith, 1979, Code 6-625 (arranged by Soundex code), "RUEHRSCHNECK, Johann, Private, A/1. Last mentioned in muster Roll of June 1783." In Brunswick (Braunsweig) Deserter-Immigrants of the American Revolution by Clifford Neal Smith, 1973, pl 36: Ruehr, Johann, birthplace Lutter am Barenberge age 23/00 E (=whereabouts unknown) According to The Dictionary of American Surnames, vol 3, by Patrick Hanks, 2003, Ruehrschneck would be German for "Ruhr Snail" or a slow-moving person from the Ruhr Valley region. I cannot print an umlaut on Yahoo. Hope this gives you somewhere to start. Anthony Hubka Birmingham, AL = "Harriet E. Rasnick" <herasnick@comcast.net> wrote: I am a newbie in genealogy. I cannot find anything on Rasnick or Rührschneck in my Name Lexicon. Try Hungary (there is would be pronounced Rashnig, but written with just an s which is SH) you may also try to get a Name lexicon from the Library or as Interlibrary loan for Polish names, or Austrian Names (Galicia perhaps?) I even tried Reschnig - but nothing... Have you tried to put the various spellings into a Google URL, sometimes you will get Family trees of various names that way. In general, I like Ancestry, but before ou make a special trip to the library......... In regards to the tDraft Registration cards....great data BUT BUT BUT please note the "will be able to" some have been available for months.....many states are still only partially available, and a bunch of others are entirely in the "Coming SOON" status, as they have been for months. Coming SOON! Coming soon......
Soon might mean something at this point. Just this week, they let me sign up for "first notice" by e-mail. Not offered till now.
