    1. Sudetenland book
    2. I found an interesting book at the local bookstore today titled "Bilder aus dem Sudetenland" Its a compilation of life in the Sudeten areas with pictures dating from the late 1800 to the early 1930s. It was written by Alois Harsko who was born in 1936 in Brettern in the Boehmerwald. There are about 500 photos which identify some people and villages but its main value is simply a depiction of what life was like in the area. The bookstore had about 10 copies on sale for 11 euros (about $13). If anyone is interested write me and I could tell you more or pick you up a copy. Tim jachowski

    2. Amazon.de has the book mentioned plus another about Christmas in the Sudetenland, sold together for EU 23.859. Amazon.de accepts US Credit Cards, makes the purchase easy and gives the best exchange rate. Used copies are available at: http://www.geosmile.de/index.asp?pid=93049 but I could not tell if they accept credit cards. To order at the EU 10.43 price for the "Bilder" only, you may have to FAX a question about credit cards before ordering. Or go through the order process and see if a credit card option comes up. There is a line on the left of the page that says Zahlung per Kreditkarte, indicating that is a choice. There may be other sites with the book if you search using the title. 3. Bill, At www.newspaperarchive.com there were tons of hits for Thoendel in Chicago, I pulled the ones for the Jewelry store and placed them temporarily on a webpage. I could not find any though for the 1940's but there were many very interesting ones for earlier years. There is also sorta a bio in one, which I saved. Go to the link below to view them. Let me know when you have right-clicked and saved them all, so I can delete them. http://www.lifesadance.net/pend/Thoendel/ Enjoy, Jody ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill's Mail" <willthon@msn.com> To: <GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2005 11:56 PM Subject: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] Thoendel Jewelry Store - Chicago > > I am searching for information about the Thoendel family that owned a > Chicago jewelry store in the 1940's. 3. Susie, I suspect you are talking about "Caroline Huble" - after reading your posting, I looked at Ancestry and found her in the 1930 census. Was Jacob her spouse? In the 1920 census he is 70 & she is 49, says she immigrated in 1879 from Germany (can't depend on how Ancestry records information). I suppose her maiden name was Frieda. In the Family Trees at Ancestry.com, there is a "Carrie (Turner) Shelton" also researching this same family, do you know her? She reports a Caroline FRIEDA was born 26 MAY 1870 in Mehrin, Austria - married 3 JAN 1889 in Lavaca Co., Texas to Herman Oscar HUBLE b: 22 MAR 1908 in Beeville, Bee Co., Texas. Is this your couple? You may want to contact her and ask her source for the place of birth Mehrin, Austria. Hope this helps, Jody ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susie Perkins" <susieperkins@msn.com> To: <GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 26, 2005 11:37 AM Subject: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] Where is Magyarorszag, Austria ? >I recently found my grandmother on the 1930 Texas census. 2. Linda Therkelsen
    3. Actually, I usually do quite well finding folks in the census using lots of tricks and some patience. In this case, it was partly a matter of time utility. It would be insanity to use Soundex for a name like Bauer -- there is only one consonant after the "B", so it would get far too many hits. Plus the problem, as mentioned, that there were 650 people named Bauer in the 1920 census just in Cook County-- with the name spelled correctly, before even doing variant spellings. So, since it really wasn't necessary for the purpose-- to find descendants--and the approximate year of birth was already established with other, I dropped it. I had been using Ferdinand as the easiest name to turn up in the family group. Linda

    2. I know that both of these names are found in Texas. Although Mueller and variations of this name are somewhat common, Biedermann is far less common. Perhaps, you could consult the online telephone directory for Texas and learn more about just how many of each of these families might be found in Texas. Carroll Warschak Waco, Texas

    3. Hi Cathy, No secret, but a word of advice. Never rely on what the search boxes return to you. In my primary line alone, only once did the search return what I was looking for. I tediously viewed every census page for the counties I knew they resided in, and ultimately found them all. Even with all of the name variations you can think of, there are always others no one would think of. Even Soundex is reliant on what the enumerators wrote and what the transcribers read. Good Luck! 3. Dear Linda and Cathy, Census takers weren't keen on getting the spelling of names correct, particularly in cross cultural situations. You can try to find the locations where they lived in 1900 and 1920 in the 1910 census, but the enumeration districts are likely not consistent between census'. My family never had the same name in any US census. I just plowed through the census records looking in the S's, in the City where they lived, looking for a family with the correct makeup and familiar first names. Found them in one census under the Z's. Looking at all of the Soundex options also works sometimes. 3. Thank you very much for the many answers to my "Search for relatives in Chicago". It's great, I got a lot of informations. Now I know that the name of Katharina's husband is Joseph and not George. Unfortunalely four of Katharina's five children had no descendants. May be that son George had children. Linda Therkelsen (thank you) gave me the following informations about George: He lived in Huffman, Harris County, Texas. Huffman is a little north of Houston. George E. Bauer b. ~1906 Ill. d. 03 Aug. 1983 Harris County, Texas (occ. 1930 machinist, printing press) +Edith Harriett ____ d. 03 May 1979 Harris County, Texas Perhaps someone in Texas can help me by looking for their obituaries. Or someone knows an other way to find descendants of George Bauer. Thank you and a happy new year to all who are reading and writing in this German-Bohemian list. My ancestors lived in the Bohemian village Neudorf (near Pfraumberg and Tachau). My parents told me much about Neudorf and I often visit this area. I have to drive by car only 30 minutes. 3. The Chicago Tribune web site is free, but the one I usually use is a pay site. This is part of NewsBank America in the subscription to Godfrey.org. This may be a part of HeritageQuest, I'm not sure. HeritageQuest is part of many libraries in their databases. However, it is mostly going to cover major newspapers, and only some go back very far. As you saw, the Houston Chronicle online only went back to 1985. When I need smaller or older newspapers, I either go to the Minnesota Historical Society for all those in my state, or order appropriate newspapers on microfilm at a county library. If you have a few simple requests, I can try looking for them. The subscription to Godrey Library online is very reasonable, like $30 a year.
