Pam, you did a very nice job on your website! Congratulations. Be careful, however, that you have no living person mother's maiden-name retrievable from your family page, because identity theft is a real threat and family pages provide the sources. Often the mother's maiden name is used for a personal ID on bank account, etc. Therefore, it is wise to make arrangements with the bank not to use your mother's or grandmother's maiden name, but invent some other word for security. If a website gives you choices for an ID word, pick your favorite pet's name, the name of a city or some other option, but never EVER use your immediate family's names. If you have used these names in the past, go back to the originator for another option and make a change, immediately. You would be surprised to know how many unscrupulous people these days are using their computers and time to trace the IDs of others for personal and quite illegal gain. Hi, All, I am a relatively new member of the listserv, and am enjoying it so much! Thank you all for your contributions and excellent questions. I am thinking that the long-time members already know about these maps, but I offer them anyway. I have really enjoyed these beautiful maps, and confirmed the names of towns for 2 ggrandparents. See the Ravenstein Map (1883) online at: http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/home.html An older map collection is on the UCLA website. See the Blaeu collection (drawn in the 1600s) at: http://www.library.ucla.edu/yrl/reference/maps/blaeu/index.htm Enjoy! Barbara in Texas
To Barbara: If you go about your genealogy as you go after maps --- and this is the right way to start, my dear --- you are going to be very successful. Thanks for sharing, you found a few beauties. You can supplement these maps with very detailed maps used by the Austrian Hungarian Military which you can find at: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/nepek.gif Thanks for sharing, Aida ------------------------------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: <barbarasrelatives@sbcglobal.net> To: <GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 8:12 PM Subject: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] maps > Hi, All, > I am a relatively new member of the listserv, and am enjoying it so much! > Thank you all for your contributions and excellent questions. Thank you Rose The most detailed maps that even show buildings are in sections. Each has only certain latitudes and longitures -- not an entire country. If you are interested in a certain part of Bohemia, go o Shtetlseeker search page and enter the name of a place. All of the possibilities for latitude and longitude that are in the database will display. Click on any one of them to get the mapquest view. Use the latitude and longitude for the area you want to ask Univ. of WI for the maps you want. Specify black and white or color (color copies are more expensive). Karen
With (e.g.) Family Tree Maker you need three steps: Fist export the data into GEDCOM format, second import the data into FTM (use another name) with field selection and omitt the notes-field. Third export the data again in GEDCOM format. There are old genealogy books for Germany on CD at: http://www.genealogical.com/countries/Germany.html I don't know if they include Austria. Karen
Start with the books: Germans to America and see if you find them there. You can also look at immigration ships lists at the NARA website (including Castle Garden before Ellis Island opened). If you live in a city where there is a NARA regional center you can look at the US census index to find where someone with that family settled. That index may also be on line at ProQuest and Ancestry.com. Public libraries usually give free acess to one or both of them. Go o familysearch.org and search with the surname Grossbach with the search offered on the home page. The hits will tell you where some families with that name lived in Germany, Bohemia and Austria. Understand that some people who identified themselves as Austrian could have been from Bohemia. Likewise, some people who are identified as German could have been from Austria. Karen
There are some interesting old books available on CD at: http://www.archivecdbooksusa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT Explore to see what is included so far. The site is worth searching from time to time to see what is new. There are a number of old city directories and other data for Canadian provinces and for US states. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas are not yet included. If you click on Geography as a category and then on World there is an 1844 immigration atlas. Karen
I am searching for Grossbach family members that lived in Hortau, Germany. Please reply if you know of any of my family that went to your church or you know lived in a certain area...This would help me discover my ancestors. With kind regards, Karen Grossbach Kautz
Canadian vital records on line are listed at: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm Read the entire article and click on the links within the text. Vital records on line are at: http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazgw/gazgw-0087.htm Additional Canadian searchable database links are at: http://globalgenealogy.com/links/canada-bc.htm Karen
The URL below is a website that finds locations of US places. If you can't find a map with your ancestor's home area on it, try this website. I tested it with the Minnesota place name where I went to High School and it worked well, providing a map and latitude and longitude. I then tried other place names like Severance (a township in Sibley County), St. George, Sibley County and West Newton, Brown County. I got no result on any of those searches. I am guessing that it works only with names of cities, towns and villages found in a current US Atlas or Gazetteer.` http://www.goldbug.com/map/sitefinder.html
I found this in Ancestry and I thought that people who search cemeteries would find this a very good tool. For whatever it is worth, try it! I guess it will only work at places where they have the technology installed. --- Aida Ancestry Quick Tip Another Mapping Tool Charlie Hathaway Some time ago, I read about Google Earth for locating cemeteries and it is a very nice tool, but I just learned about another mapping tool that works great for genealogists who search cemeteries, it's called "Windows Local Live Beta." It is not live as the name implies, but maybe it will be someday. Currently the photos appear to be about two years old. It is amazing what it does, especially if you are looking in a region where they have what they call a "Birds eye view" which allows you to look at a building or other objects like cemeteries from North, South, East, or West in 3d, plus from above in an Arial view or a road map view. It also gives you driving instructions from one point on the map to another. This is what they say about themselves: "Windows Live Local combines mapping and local search to put the answers to your search questions in a geographical context. To do this, Windows Live Local combines MSN Search with the latest in mapping to create a new Web application built on Microsoft technology." Windows local live will allow you to print out the layout of the cemetery before you go, so you will know in advance what you are going to be exploring and may help you to cover it completely even if you have to do it in several visits. One More Map Tool ADN Editor's Note: On the subject of mapping tools, I also received the following tip from Richard Danca: Have you seen this? It's still in beta (only 100 new users a month), but looks like a really clever use of Google mapping technology. Richard Danca Newton, Massachusetts Thanks to Charlie and Richard for today's Quick Tips! If you have a tip you would like to share with researchers, you can send it to: ADNeditor@ancestry.com.
