A general comment to list members. Having just purchased the 2006, latest edition of "Family Tree Maker" ( 15th). It includes a 90 day FREE Subscription to Ancestry.com. - On attempting to register for the FREE Subscription, a Credit Card number is required !!! Why would a Credit Card number be requiered if it is FREE. I refused the offer as I was not willing to provide a Credit Card Number. Aida, I'm curious of what "all sorts of problems" you found using FTM. Maybe I'm missing something and if so, would like to know about it. I've looked at PAF couple times in the past, and it didn't measure up to FTM, other than being adapted to LDS input, if need be. PAF may have improved in the past few years. Think you can put in more generations now, and printout of trees is now supported. Nice to access other genealogist data, but I would not accept it as 'gospel', for many people do not check out their data or provide documentation. If you do not check it out and circulate the incorrect data, spreads the incorrect information further. You do not have to be a member of the Mormon Church to access their archives. Since they have a base inventory of 21 Million ancestors from all over the world, I was able to connect to some older branches of my family which were already on file and were researched by someone else who had also deposited their information at the LDS archives. If everyone would use this source, we could combine all our efforts and avoid a lot of duplicate work. In some cases I was able to continue back to 1616. In other words, it is a depository for all our research to be shared by everyone for very little expense. Here's one I have not been able to find. My g-g-grandmother Catherine Klug (b. 1836 - d. 1916). I find her in the 1880 and 1900 census living with my g-g-grandfather on their farm in Sherman Twp, Huron County. My g-g-grandfather died in 1901. Family records say that after Catherine's husband died she went to live with her oldest son, Henry, with his family also in Sherman Twp. I find Henry in the 1910 census but I don't see his mother Catherine listed as living there. I checked the families of the other children of Catherine too and I don't find her there. I've looked for all Catherine's and all Katie's in the county born around when she was born.....and still don't find her. I notice that often the Name "Klug" was transcribed as "King" by the people at MyFamily.com. So I did find some of my relatives by looking at "King" I am not sure where Catherine was in 1910 though. >From: KarenHob@aol.com >Reply-To: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com >To: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] New Census Database on line --- Is this new >? >Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2006 20:46:50 EDT > >In a message dated 6/22/2006 5:04:49 PM Mountain Standard Time, >netkitty@hotmail.com writes: >I think some people are just not noted. For certain people that I couldn't find I did try all last name spellings and then I would omit the last name entirely and look for all people with that first name born within a ten year period of the birth year and place. I would keep widening the criteria and would scroll and scroll through lists. Sometimes I would omit the first name and look for everyone with a similar last name. Then some times I would omit both the first and last name and just look for everyone born in Germany or Bohemia in a give year range. etc. I think some people are just not noted. It's understandable given that some people lived on farms in remote areas. Maybe some were in a hospital at the time....etc. >From: KarenHob@aol.com >Reply-To: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com >To: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] New Census Database on line --- Is this new >? >Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2006 18:54:02 EDT > >In a message dated 6/22/2006 2:17:28 PM Mountain Standard Time, >netkitty@hotmail.com writes: > It is great for what it is.......it's not guranteed to find everyone of >course. > > >Be sure to try alternate spellings of your family name without relying on >their index to find sound alikes. > >One list member reported that Ancestry has his Baumgartner name spelled >"Baumgardner" and it does not show up on any search of their database >unless you >use that wrong spelling. OK, I see. I don't know what is new about it. Maybe they have been gradually adding more and more entries and now are just marketting this again to attract subscribtions. I don't find anything new to the period of 1860 - 1930, for my ancestors. From Prague Post: Ambitious Brno gains on Prague Companies tout educated work force as main attraction By S. Adam Cardais Staff Writer, The Prague Post June 21, 2006 A few miles off the D1 highway in Brno, south Moravia, just past the rows of blue and gray prefabricated housing that sits on the outskirts of this city as a reminder of the communist past, is the Spielberk Office Centre. Spielberk, which celebrated its first anniversary June 16 with an all-day event, is one of Brno's few class-A office parks, with marble floors, flat-screen televisions and rooftop terraces in its buildings. Surrounded by yellow cranes and steel skeletons, Spielberk is still under construction but is already home to multinational companies such as GE. By 2008, when the 2.8 billion Kč ($124.2 million) park will be complete, it should house 100 companies and 6,000 people, or slightly more than 1 percent of Brno's population. Brno is a city embracing transformation. Long known best among business people for having the country's largest fairgrounds, the city is emerging as a magnet for foreign investment and a center for international commerce. "Brno has been doing well in the past couple of years," says René Samek of state inbound investment agency CzechInvest. "It had a slow start because companies that were interested in coming to the Czech Republic were interested in Prague." The country's second-largest city has stepped out of Prague's shadow. It has attracted the eyes of IBM, Lufthansa and Symbol Technologies. This year, it won fDi Magazine's European Cities and Regions of the Future 2006/07 award for Eastern Europe/Visegrad. CzechInvest is also in the middle of mediating several deals with electronics and precision engineering companies interested in Brno. "It's really happening here at the moment," says Remon Vos, managing director of CTP Invest, the development company behind Spielberk. "There's really a lot going on." 'You have to create' There's a host of reasons that come up in any recent discussion about setting up shop in Brno. The city government, which didn't respond to calls for comment on this story, has done its part, allocating land and spending money on infrastructure to attract investment. And it's benefited from the influx of multinationals, seeing gross domestic product increase 14 percent last year. But there's more to it than that. In terms of investment appeal in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Brno has always had assets. It's centrally located, has two top-rated universities — the Czech Technical University and Masaryk University — high unemployment and low labor costs. But for many years it had two things working against it. Prague was the first. For much of the '90s, investors focused on Prague because there was still plenty of room to build office parks and many skilled, educated people without jobs. Now space is limited and unemployment is below 3 percent. Infrastructure was the second major problem. The Brno airport didn't have any direct flights to other European cities until last year, and the city has suffered from a dearth of office space, which is one reason CTP Invest became interested in it. CTP Invest has been in the Czech Republic since 1998 and started developing in Brno in 2001. Vos says his company realized the city's potential — primarily its population of more than 60,000 students — and took a risk building two business parks on the bet that companies would see the opportunity to tap into a young, educated work force as well. "You have to create," Vos says. "You have to make sure there's accommodation to give the companies a chance." The gamble paid off. Executives mention the student population first when talking about why they chose Brno over other CEE cities, including Prague. Ratnesh Mathur, vice president and center head of Progeon, the daughter of an IT services firm with its headquarters in India, says this was the deciding factor in choosing where to locate its new European service center two years ago. Progeon employs 120 people in Brno and wants to create 300 more jobs this year. It will eventually occupy an entire building at Spielberk. Mathur says he's seen Brno change dramatically in the past two years and, like many companies, thinks the town is living up to the potential Progeon noticed from the start. "We're very happy to be here because we saw this coming," he says.

He said he found Baumgartner spelled correctly at the Hertage Quest website through a library. Karen
Opps. I forgot to turn off the Advanced Text Feature the first time. I've been a long time subscriber to Ancestry.com and as far as I know the 1790 - 1930 Census database has been available for years. I've always been able to access up to 1930. So what is new ? There are still some records that can't be found in the case of mistakes in the transcription or because the records were too faded. Can you explain why they advertising this as if it is something new? The notification I received said that with the now completed every name index for 1910, the collection was complete. Previously, 1910 had not been fully indexed. ----- Original Message ----- From: KarenHob@aol.com<mailto:KarenHob@aol.com> To: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2006 11:38 AM Subject: Re: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] New Census Database on line --- Is this new ? Ancestry.com announced that they now have US Census database from 1790-1930 on line at their website. I assume it is indexed but have not visited the site to find out as yet. Other genealogy database indexes generally offer a choice to find exact names or sound-alike names along with exact names. When that choice is offered it is a good idea to use it. As an example, my Bregel surname also appears in US Census spelled Brigel or Briegal....for the same family. Since the announcement was in morning newspapers it may be best to wait a week or so to try to use the database if you subscribe to Ancestry.com or access their websites via a public library or LDS FHC. The website may be overloaded for a while so all you might get when you visit it is a message to try again later. Ancestry says they are the only source for that particular database on line. Karen
