Hello, Paul and good luck on your genealogical searches. It may be difficult for you to get much farther back than 1667. As you probably know, the 30 years war raged through Bohemia from 1618 to 1648. Many records were destroyed (or, at least those few records that existed - prior to that time not many were literate, even among the clergy) and the population was decimated, such that at the end of the war, the Hapsbergs brought in people to settle the area, mostly from either Bavaria or other parts of Austria. So, prior to about 1650 most of our ancestors probably lived elsewhere and there may not be records wherever they did come from. All that said, there were references to Eberls in a book I have about my ancestoral village, Auherzen (Uherce), which is perhaps 5 km east of Saluschen (Zaluzi). An Eberl from Saluschen married Anna Schaffer from #9 in Auherzen sometime in the late 1700s or very early 1800s. I would be interested in knowing whether she moved to Saluschen and what her husband's name was, if you have that information. That Anna was the aunt of my great-great grandfather, who immigrated to Wisconsin. In addition, Andreas Eberl married Maria Schaffer (born June 3, 1825), the sister of my great-great grandfather, on Jan 1, 1845. I will repeat what it says in the book about Andreas Eberl, although I don't entirely understand it. Andr. Eberl, Litt. 7 [Litt. is an abbreviation, although I don't know for what - I cannot find a village that begins Litt in the region on a map I have] (Bauer [farmer] "Tschowitzen?) I assume Tschowitzen is also a village, although I don't know where. So, not much helpful information, but a little. Best wishes. Jack Schaffer ----- Original Message ---- From: Paul Eberl <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 31, 2008 2:31:31 PM Subject: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] EBERL Hello. I am new to this group. I am researching my czech ancestors, surname EBERL, who farmed in the Kotovice-Zaluzi area for over 300 years. The earliest I have is Casparus EBERL who lived in Zaluzi #7 from 1667 to 1754. Can anyone help me? The URL below is to download a PDF that is an index of all the surnames on CDs for the book Handbuch bürgerlicher Familien Save the PDF to file to study later even if you don't think you need it. _http://www.genealogie-service.de/download/DGB/GROSREG.pdf_ (http://www.genealogie-service.de/download/DGB/GROSREG.pdf) There are 64 volumes in the original publication with 8 additional since then. The PDF lets a researcher find names that sound like a family surname as well as the surname itself. It also references the volume and page number on which the surname is found. The reference to a CD is for those inclined to purchase a CD version of the volume(s) they need. These CDs with 10 or so volumes on each can be more than $50 each and in my case I would have to get three of them to cover all of the volumes that had my family surnames. There is a less expensive possibility. There is a Wurttemburg district library at Stuttgart that shows they have thees books. I may be possible to request a lookup once one has the right books and pages per the data in the PDF. First try the Heimat Library at Stuttgart. I have posted contact informatrion for that regional Heimat library many times and now I must ask list members who have that data to please send it back to me. I have a new PC and when I installed my mail server all my old addresses disappeared. Please post the contact info to the list so list members can ask those super friendly librarians to please scan and email the pages needed. The books are shown at the Wurttemberg Regional library and it may be possible to get someone to look up information and scan/Email pages from there, too. _http://wwwneu.wlb-stuttgart.de:8080/Sykas/HLS/Systematik/H/HLS_H_016/HLS_H_01 6_005/HLS_H_016_005_005/hls_titel?sig_sort_ab=HU+02980&sig_sort_bis=HU+03500_ (http://wwwneu.wlb-stuttgart.de:8080/Sykas/HLS/Systematik/H/HLS_H_016/HLS_H_01 6_005/HLS_H_016_005_005/hls_titel?sig_sort_ab=HU+02980&sig_sort_bis=HU+03500) They may NOT have ALL the books. They have an Email contact and question form at: _http://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/die-wlb/ansprechpartner/kontaktformular/_ (http://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/die-wlb/ansprechpartner/kontaktformular/) If you write them make it very simple with one line for each data item following a general question like, "Is it possible fo get scanned copies of the following pages from Handbuch bürgerlicher Familien? We don't want to flood them with requests which would tempt them to say "Forget it!" so if you plan to send a request, please tell the list so others can wait a while to process their requests. These lists do not necessarily include German Bohemians. But they DO include the names of families who may have sent settlera to Bohemia after the Thirty Years War. If you are interested only in German Bohemians and don't care about their ancestors from the German principalities in the 17th Century, you might ask one of the libraries to tell you firrst of all if there are any German Bohemians represented in those books. Is this helpful Karen? I believe this is the Heimat Library in Stuttgart. There is a map of Bavaria and its counties at: _http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/Bavaria_ (http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/Bavaria) The map may be helpful for people who are using the German white pages. I found that using the map may require a login (registration that is free). Once you log in you can use the "community portal". Over a year ago Ed Brant was updating his very comprehensive book on German Genealogy. I submitted some data for him and I believe it included some links to on line databases in Germany that I found at that time. The librarians at the Stuttgart Heimat library should know of any databases that are available through any of the German churches (protestant records are considered public while Catholic ones are sort of "private") or other organizations that collect immigration and vital records for Germany. I no longer recall the organizations that keep them and finding a copy of what I sent for the book will take too long. I did find: _http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/germandata.html_ (http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/germandata.html) and: _http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/germanlinks.html_ (http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/germanlinks.html) I do not see my name on the list of contributors to the book so I don't know if my data was included. If you get a copy of Ed Brandt's German Genealogy via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) make sure that you have the 2007 edfition. A PDF download with all the addresses of various Silesian Heimatsuben / museums in Germany is at: _http://www.schlesisches-museum.de/hst/dateien/Adressen.pdf_ (http://www.schlesisches-museum.de/hst/dateien/Adressen.pdf) Those who are researching GLATZ and any other Kreise or counties or even parish communities in the Reisengebirge, and northern Bohemia/Moravia may find their Heimatstube listed here. There are fourteen pages listing communities of northern Bohemia and where their central contact in Germany is now located. The name of people to contact with their phone numbers and addresses is also given. I suggest you download the entire 14-page PDF and then look for your parish community, county or Kreis or village in the list. It is NOT alphabetical overall. There is a very comprehansive site for list members whose ancestors came from the Riesengebirge area. This covers the area from Reichenberg to Trautenau. _http://www.riesengebirgler.de/_ (http://www.riesengebirgler.de/) Google searches don't work to translate with a Google URL seach, but the home page suggests that you copy and paste the text to Google Translate to get the text in fair English. The links on the left have images of old postcards, some more recent photos and, perhaps most important, lists of GEFALLEN during the World Wars. They are listed by village. If you don't know a Reisengebirge birthplace of an ancestor the list of surnames with villages on that part of the website could be most helpful. There is also a list of Heimat books by an author named Junker. The list covers single books for given places or vicinities rather than for an entire county or Kreis. Even though the links are in German, it is a good idea to click on each one and see the list of possibillities it opens in the same left hand panel. Then click on them to see if there are photos, books, lists of names or other data. There are also pages about forestry and paper making, mining, glassmaking and o ther enterprises that were associated with the area. Under the link for " Kirchen" find "Kirche Wang". Clicking on that shows photos of a rare wooden church that is more Silesian than Bohemian. The text generally emphasizes the Silesian roots of much of the area and how settlers from Germany assimilated and adoped those traditions. The site INDEX gives a very good page with a lot of links that one might miss by just searching the left panel on the home page. Take the time needed to thoroughly search this site. The webmaster of this site sometimes puts up special pages with PDF databases and other information. However these pages are not permanent. **************AOL Search: Your one stop for directions, recipes and all other Holiday needs. Search Now. I don't know enough about immigrants using the inland waterway to know if those coming to MN would have been quarantined on Grosse Ile. Perhaps some Canadian list members can tell us more about that??? This is from Richard Eastmans newsletter: In Quarantine: Life and Death on Grosse Ile, 1832-1937 The following announcement was written by Library and Archives Canada: Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the launch of In Quarantine: Life and Death on Grosse Île, 1832-1937, a project funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online Program. Featuring a variety of documents preserved and digitized by LAC, such as lists of births and deaths at sea, hospital registers, journals, letters, photographs and maps, this virtual exhibition tells the story not only of the quarantine station, but also of the individuals who experienced life on the island. Immigrants at Grosse Île, a database containing thousands of digitized documents related to individuals who lived on Grosse Île, is now available through this website. You are invited to visit the site at: _www.collectionscanada.ca/grosse-ile_ (http://www.collectionscanada.ca/grosse-ile) . The contributions of many LAC staff were instrumental in the success of this project, and their efforts are much appreciated. Published by Richard Eastman at his Genealogy Newsletter website: Marshfield, Wisconsin Public Library Wins an Award for its Genealogy Database By examining newspapers of the 1800s era through the present, volunteers and Marshfield, Wisconsin Public Library staff have created an award-winning archive that contains more than 234,000 records of people who live and have lived in the community. "Old newspapers are full of information, but there isn't an index for them," said Don Schnitzler, an archive volunteer and member of the Marshfield Genealogy Group that first proposed the project to the library in 1982. "Usually, you need to look at a lot of newspapers to find a piece of information you need," he said. "But this online index of births, marriages and deaths makes family research a lot simpler." The library recently won the Wisconsin Governor's Archival Achievement Award. The work of the library and local residents was commended "as a wonderful example of how a community can keep recording its own history in new ways," Gottlieb said Sunday. You can read more about the database and the award in an article by Liz Welter in the Marshfield News-Herald at _http://www.marshfieldnewsherald.com/article/20081104/MNH0101/811040406/1980_ (http://www.marshfieldnewsherald.com/article/20081104/MNH0101/811040406/1980) . The database is accessible at _http://engagedpatrons.org/database/MPLGenealogy_ (http://engagedpatrons.org/database/MPLGenealogy) . ----- Historical Records Of 600,000 Canadian WWI Heroes Now Online The following announcement was written by The Generations Network, the parent company of Ancestry.ca: 600,000 records of our World War One heroes, including famous Canadians - John McCrae, Tommy Douglas and Frederick Banting (Toronto, ON – November 5, 2008) Between 1914-1918, more than 600,000 Canadian men, most untrained civilians, braved foreign soil to join the Allied Forces in an effort to restore peace and freedom to the world, with more than 60,000 making the ultimate sacrifice. Ancestry.ca, Canada’s leading online family history website, honours those men with the Soldiers of the First World War, 1914 - 1918, which contains the original records, fully searchable, of more than 598,000 Attestation Papers of enlisted soldiers. An Attestation Paper was the first document a soldier signed before entering the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). In many cases, these may be the only surviving record of the enlistment of many Canadian soldiers who fought in World War One. Attestation Papers provide a range of details about the enlistee including place of birth, age, physical description and next of kin. Some also include valuable information about their lives before the war, such as their occupation, marital status and residence. Karen Peterson, Marketing Director, Ancestry.ca, comments: “Military records are invaluable to any family history enthusiast wishing to trace the military career of their ancestors and what makes this collection particularly significant is its sheer size, and also the rich personal details to be found in individual records. “With Remembrance Day approaching, this collection reminds us of the sacrifices and incredible hardships all Canadians endured during The Great War.” The struggle of World War One involved virtually the whole country and made enormous demands on the Canadian people, whether they were involved in the actual fighting or remained on the home front to work in industry or farming to support the war effort. **************AOL Search: Your one stop for directions, recipes and all other Holiday needs. And here is the list for Pilsen. I have to explain the word "Bory," this place is synonymous with concentration camps, only worse, because it was not a camp, but a high security jail. Like about Alcatrez or Sing Sing. While the list for Mies gives the cause of their demise, here their profession is given(and you can see that they are from the upper class). In most cases the day of their annihilation is listed, but not the cause. It must be explained that academically schooled persons were immediately captured for the reason that they were NSDAP members. But in reality, they had no choice than to become a party member because after Hitler's occupation of the Sudetenland they could not remain doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc....and it was automatic to convert their old Czech diplomas to a new German license in 1938 . The Czechs, however, considered the acceptance of their new German license in order to continue their professions and making a living under the NAZI regim high treason. They considered the Sudetengermans Czech citizens, a status to which they had never agreed. At the time of their demise in 1945 they were not allowed legal representation and they were convicted by a junta. Considering that it took more than 60 years to honor their deaths, we should bow our heads in recognition. Hello. I am new to this group. I am researching my czech ancestors, surname EBERL, who farmed in the Kotovice-Zaluzi area for over 300 years. The earliest I have is Casparus EBERL who lived in Zaluzi #7 from 1667 to 1754. Can anyone help me? Paul Eberl
I have contacted you off the list, because I attached maps and research material which I cannot attach to this format. I also found the address of Wilhelm Eberl of Salluschen, who might be a relative of yours and is living in Germany. He seems to be in charge of information of the former Salluschen village having had about 380 inhabitants. Salluschen was administered from Mies (now Stribro) and the church registers from this area can be found at the archives of Pilsen (Plzen). Watch for my email to your inbox with more personal detailed information. Aida -------------------------------------- On Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:31 PM, Paul Eberl <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello. Hi Mario, I think the records from Hohenstadt are now in the archive in Olomouc and beginn there in 1650 or so. I had never to do with this archive, so I can you not say, how it the procedure. Write simply and ask: http://www.archives.cz/zao/olomouc/home/kontakty/index.html good luck in your search Lars Germany ----- Original Message ----- From: "Aida Kraus" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2008 6:56 PM Subject: Re: [GERMAN-BOHEMIAN] Mario Fromml, family tree Dear Mario. I guess you are the translator of scripts, right? I don't know how much I can help you , but just from the top of my head, the name Frömmel is known to me from a Pastry Shop (Konditorei) at Vienna, and that name is also connected to a famous architect of a tower in Vienna which was erected there in the late 1800. The Vienna connection to Moravia has always been strong, and in the old days they moved freely among the Austrian Hungarian countries for over 400 years. The name Frömmel (German) is also found quite frequently in the Erzgebirge-Sachsen area in North German Bohemia. In Czech the name is spelled Friml who was a famous composer. The town you mention is Hohenstadt in Moravia and background information can be found on this web page, it is written in English: http://thorin.adnc.com/~lynnd/gfaqf.html The Czech name for Hohenstadt is Zábřeh, so I suggest that you go to www.mapy.cz and key in "Zábřeh" and click "hledej" then a map will come up which you can enlarge. On the top you click on "dalsi" where you will pull down a menu. Choose "Historicka" and enlarge the map a little and "Hohenstadt" will come up. This is merely to help you with your preliminary search. It would be wise to try to find a Heimatbrief or Heimatstube connection in Germany on Hohenstadt. Our German Bohemian list covers mainly the Bohemian part, but we are happy to help out. However, you would be more expertly served if you joined the Moravian list on rootsweb, because there you would connect with people who were expelled from their homeland and resettled in Germany and who would have more exact information. I am posting here a link to the Moravian List Archives which you should read, perhaps you will to find there a connection to either the name or the city. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/MORAVIA Good luck! Hello Mario - Hohenstadt is my hometown. (*32) If you go to www.schoenhengstgau.eu/verein you will be able to read - in German - about the largest German "Sprachinsel" (linguistic island) in Czecho- to which Hohenstadt belonged. I have a few copies of the periodical 'Schònhengster Heimat'. However there is no reference to the name Fròmmelin the Hohenstadt column. As Aida suggested the name was widespread in the Sudetenland. If you need someone to research the archives for you, I can recommend Jiri Osanec who lives nearby in Olomouc (Olmütz).
