Here is a link to see types of signatures and handwriting by farmers in Europe in 1750. Some of the signatures are sure-handed and we can be sure that they could read and write. Some farmers signed only with the letters of their names or a sign, and some have other persons write down their name and make a cross above it. This was the legal way in signing official documents. Here are the links: http://www.suetterlinschrift.de/Lese/Sutterlin7.htm
Richard Eastman's Newsletter reports that Family Search announces new digital records releases: 1875 Norway Census In the first week of December, we will start indexing the 1875 Norway Census. This will be a large segment of the census for rural areas of Norway, but not the entire census. FamilySearch’s Historical Family Reconstitution unit has joined forces with the University of Tromsø in Norway to complete this project. The university is indexing the census records for the urban areas of Norway. Pass the word along that anyone interested in Norwegian genealogical research is encouraged to help by volunteering as a FamilySearch indexer. Karen, I know I have not been very active lately this is because I have been very busy and been traveling a lot job wise. I know well what you will be facing with shoulder surgery. I had my right shoulder operated on and you are correct it will drive you nuts. However after the healing and therapy is complete you will feel like a new person. I wish you the best and a speedy and no complications recovery. I would also like to thank you for all of your assistance with locating my grandfather's birth place. The information you gave me plus what I already had I have handed over to Jakub Smid to see what he can do with it as I just don't have the time and I was running into to many dead ends. Again, thank you and get well soon. I would like to thank everybody for their explanations of 'infantile convulsions'. As to the location of Zaluzi-Kotovice, (one must be specific as there several towns named 'Zaluzi') the one I am referring to is located approx.10km southwest of Pilsen. Paul Eberl
To me, infantile convulsions would sound like febrile seizures (from a fever), except that you mention quite a few of your relatives died of this. Febrile seizures in infants are not so uncommon and not usually fatal, even without some Tylenol or aspirin. Even without some drugs, parents of those times would usually be able to cool a baby down, too, to reduce fever. Those cold compresses really do help! So I wondering if it is not some seizure disorder that's genetic. Linda Pediatric RN
www.Antiquus Morbus.com suggests that Kinderkrampfe (eclampsia infantum) might have been a type of Eclampsia/Eclampsy. "Sometimes applied to a form of puerperal convulsions resembling epilepsy in severity." It certainly was very common. When mother's were giving birth almost every year it is hard to imagine how their bodies could recover. Even in US modern times, 1860-1900, cemetery records will have pages of tiny babies & stillborns. Sometimes almost every child in a family was stillborn or died after a few days. Maybe the RH factor played a roll before we knew what it was. My great grandfather was the eldest of 9 children of his father's second wife. Only he and sibling number 7 survived. 4 died of Infant convulsions including twins. 3 were stillborn. I find Krampfe listed on various sides of my family. LaVerne
Hi Claudia, St.Catherines was a village near Rosshaupt, between Rosshaupt and Primda/Pfraumberg on the main road to Pilsen. >From Aida: This is how infantile convulsion is described if it is not epileptic: INFANTILE CONVULSIONS. DEFINITION.—An infantile convulsion corresponds to a chill in an adult, and is the most common brain affection among children. CAUSES.—Anything that irritates the nervous system may cause convulsions in the child, as teething, indigestible food, worms, dropsy of the brain, hereditary constitution, or they may be the accompanying symptom in nearly all the acute diseases of children, or when the eruption is suppressed in eruptive diseases. -------------------------------------------- On Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 3:18 AM, Paul Eberl <[email protected]> wrote: > I believe the Andreas Eberl (from Zaluzi (Salluschen) #7, Striboro, > Bohemia) > you are referring to is an ancestor of mine (!769-1844). Paul: Are those towns near Rosshaupt? Rosshaupt (Rovdavov) is now about 1 Km from he German border. The church records seem to be St Catherines, unless that is the name of another town. Infantile convulsions could have been the result of a bacterial or viral infection. I know children, especially infants, are susceptible to having convulsions with a high fever. They would not have had Aspirin or Tylenol which is used today. A lot of people died from infections that are easily treated with antibiotics now. Claudia Sperl **************One site has it all. I believe the Andreas Eberl (from Zaluzi (Salluschen) #7, Striboro, Bohemia) you are referring to is an ancestor of mine (!769-1844). According to my records, his wife, Anna Schaffer, gave birth to a girl, Barbara, on July 9, 1821. Unfortunately, Barbara died of 'infantile convulsions' on July 22 of that year. Incidently, does any one know what 'infantile convulsions' are? Quite a few of my ancestors died of this. Paul Eberl
To all Do not know if this will be of any help, but just this morning I was at the LDS Church researching records from Rosshaupt, Bohemia. I came up on the name Eberl written in conformation records circa 1821. There were a few names one of which was Andreas. This was in the LDS film, St .Catherine/Rosshaupt. There are a lot of Church but difficult to read because of the style of writing and the penmanship. GS#0835448, I then remembered the inquiries and decided to pass on the information. Can someone tell me if the surname Posa is truly German? I can find no leads on my maternal GGmother Maria Posa Hoffman. She apparently lived in the Red Rock area of Bastrop County Texas and married my GGfather Jacob Hoffman in Bastrop County Texas. They both imigrated there, lived their lives and died there. She passed away in 1935 but I cannot find out where she is buried. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Aida! I have visited the websites you mentioned and did the instant translation. I thought maybe the "Consumption" was an eating establishment of some sort, since Consumption is from the word to Consume or to eat. My family ran a Saloon here in Illinois after they arrived. But a grocery where they sell food for consumption makes sense too. Once when I had it translated it was actually translated as "Tuberculosis"! Both my immigrant grandfathers were Josef Schieberl, father and son. I believe they were from the Mirschikau area because I have old photos with a Bischofteinits address on the back and then I found the Schieberls mentioned in Mirschikau. Also Josef the younger married a girl from Neudorf so this is all in the same general area. Angie Wright Meyer
