Ernst, August (Gus), Nov. 22, 1926-Nov. 12, 2012 The Tribune Greeley, Colorado 16 Nov 2012 Residence: Greeley August (Gus) Ernst, 85, of Greeley, died Nov. 12, 2012, at Grace Pointe Assisted Living in Greeley. He was born Nov. 22, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo., to August and Viola (Hoelscher) Ernst. Gus attended UNC earning his degree in education and masters degree in math. He spent his college summers in Glen Haven, Colo., helping his uncle and aunts at their store. During these summers he hiked the surrounding mountains and climbed to the top of Longs Peak. After graduating college he taught in Julesburg. While there he met Betty Fitch. They were married May 29, 1949. They moved to St. Louis, where Gus began his long career in education. He was a high school principal for Bayless School System for 29 years. He retired and moved to Greeley in 1981. He worked in the Greeley School System for two years and then became the senior coordinator for the city of Evans for eight years. After his full retirement, Gus and Betty enjoyed camping, gardening and their family. Gus is survived by his wife, Betty of Milliken; daughters, Leanne Lederer and husband, Don of OFallon, Mo., and Jennifer Ernst of Milliken; sons, Ronald Ernst and wife, Cookie of Olathe, Kan., and Steven Ernst of Loveland; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhea Ernst. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at St. Johns United Church of Christ. Gus requested in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to St. Johns United Church of Christ in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 28th St., Greeley, CO, 80634.
