Billings Gazette Billings, MT 31 Dec 2006 Rosalia Wilhelmina Krum Jan. 29, 1907 - Dec. 29, 2006 (One month short of her 100th birthday.) The eldest of six children, Rose was born on the homestead at what was then Krem, N.D., near Zap and Beulah. Her parents, Matilda (Heine) and John Kunz were Germans-from-Russia and had immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1890s. When she was a teen, the family came to Fromberg by train through the recruitment efforts of the sugar beet industry. Rose married Henry Krum Jan. 1, 1927. They farmed near Bridger with his parents and brother and sister-in-law, all living under the same roof for several years, both having large families. Eventually her family bought a farm southeast of Belfry in the early 1940s. Life without many conveniences kept Rose busy fulfilling the needs of her family, but she never complained about the back-breaking work. Henry died in 1962 when she was only 55 years old. She lived and worked in Billings for a few years before returning to Belfry where she was active in church and senior citizens and enjoyed visiting her children and crocheting. In 1991, she moved to Prairie Tower in Billings. As her health declined, she was transferred to St. John's Lutheran Home in 1998 and was able to tend to her own needs for several more years well into her 90s. Her family greatly appreciates the dedicated care she was given those eight years. Preceding her in death were all five of her siblings: Hilda Holthues, Arthur Kunz, Emma Sawyer, Olga Christman and Herbert Kunz. Rose's youngest son, Jacob, died of a heart attack in 1998. Henry Jr., the second oldest, died of cancer in 2005. She is survived by children and spouses, Herman and Hope Krum of St. George, Utah, and their six children; Martin and Cynthia Krum of Belfry and his three children; Samuel and Maxine Krum of Belfry and his two sons; Selma and Harold Matson of Billings and their two sons; Jacob's three children of Seattle; and daughter-in-law, Louise Krum of Pasco, Wash., and her three children. In addition to the 19 grandchildren, there are over 50 great-grandchildren and as many great-great-grandchildren, plus nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belfry with burial at the Bridger Cemetery following. The Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements, but viewing will be at the funeral only. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran CHURCH of Belfry.
