    3. It depends on the generation of the family and whether they married Russians. We visited Emanuel Lell from Pfeifer, Russia when he came to Germany in the late 1990s. His adult children had a beautiful colored professional photobook on the coffee table of beautiful scenery in Kazakastan, and the younger ones talked of going back to visit what was familiar to them. At that point I realized that for that generation the idea of Germany was totally foreign to them, but an economic opportunity. The idea of the "old country" belonged to the grandparents and was totally foreign to them, in culture as well as language. But they did see it as improved opprtunity. However subsequent news reports over the year show that they also underwent the same trials as other migrants as other immigrants at the bottom strata in a society.
