The Fence Post August 27, 2007 Roland Everett Werner, age 81, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Greeley, Colo., died July 26, 2007, on his birthday. He was born west of Grover, Colo., to Solomon Jr. and Clara (Skeen) Werner. He attended West Pawnee, Grover, and College High Schools. In 1945-1946, he served in the Army as a medic aboard the hospital ship USS Comfort in the South Pacific. Returning home, he obtained his GED, then attended college for industrial education. On Aug. 24, 1947, he married Evelyn Irene Oster in Greeley. The couple owned a floor covering business in the 1950s and 1960s. Roland was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He worked at Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and Pacific Union College in Anguin, Calif., where he became foreman of maintainance and the carpentry shop. He retired after 30 years of service and moved to Leesburg, Fla. After retirement, he became a licensed auctioneer, was active in his church, and was well-known for his craftsmanship of making pens from exotic wood. There was usually something special about the wood he chose, which included wood from the Holy Land and from a demolished hospital in Eustis, Fla., from which he made 150 pens for former hospital employees. Roland will be remembered as a mentor to young church leaders, deacon, founder of Education First Foundation, Auctioneer-Fundraiser, talented craftsman and storyteller. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Leesburg; one daughter, Sharon Kay Werner of Albemarle, N.C.; a granddaughter, Katrina Jo Taylor and husband Mark of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Arthur Werner and his wife Elaine of Greeley, Reuben Werner and wife Mary of Falls Church, Va.; one sister, Lola Nussbaum and husband Charles of Grover, and several nieces and nephews.
