    3. Scottsbluff Star-Herald Scottsbluff, NE 10 May 2--7 BAYARD - Frieda G. Hoffmann went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2007, at the age of 104. She passed away in her home at the Chimney Rock Villa Assisted Living in Bayard. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 11, at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Bayard with Pastor Dan Zitterkopf officiating. She lived there until her marriage to Fritz Hoffmann and then moved to Insterburg, Germany, and later to Berlin. Frieda experienced many interesting and historical events during her long life; she even preformed at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games! She lived in Berlin during World War II, and then immigrated to the United States in 1954, living initially in Tampa, Fla. She taught herself English as she took care of her younger daughter and her family. Her daughter had suffered a stroke shortly after the birth of her second child. The next year Frieda and the family moved to Columbus, Ga. where she received employment at a country club. In 1964, she and the family moved to McGrew, Neb., and five years later they relocated to Bayard and eventually to Scottsbluff. Due to Frieda's strong German accent she couldn't find secretarial work and instead worked in food preparation in various places including the Elks Club and Hiram Scott College. Several years later she moved with her daughter to Jacksonville, Fla. where she was a member of the Murray Hill Presbyterian Church. In 2002, she moved back to Bayard and into assisted living. Frieda loved company and enjoyed seeing her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved singing hymns, playing cards, knitting, and telling stories of her youth and her life in Germany. Survivors include her daughter, Elfriede Martin of Gering; grandchildren, Elaine (Steve) Barber of Jacksonville, Fla., Mike (Cleo) Wooten of Lincoln, Carla (Gary) Gregg of Ainsworth, Kelly Martin of Wichita, Kan., Allen (Maria) Martin of Albuquerque, N.M. and Marci (Marvin) Howard of McGrew; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; her younger daughter, Irmgard Wooten; two brothers; and six sisters. Frieda's determination, sense of humor, and zeal for life kept her happy and active throughout her life. Frieda will be missed by those who knew her. She was an inspiration to us all.
