No, in Russia there was no kidnapping for the army, because there was a national conscription or military service for which every able-bodied man was eligible, unless he was the only son or the main breadwinner in the family. It lasted about 4-5 years (depending on intake). Not all were taken in, but some were placed in reserves or on standby. I think Russia still has a national service (military call up). In SA it was discontinued in 1994-ish, in the UK in the late 1950s. Vera Beljakova-Miller
