She was born in Mullen, Neb. to Ephriam and Florence (Teachworth) Hampton on June 19, 1924. Her childhood was spent on a ranch in Cherry County, Neb., where she attended a country school. In the mid 1930s the family moved to Curtis, Neb., and the following year to Bolivar, Missouri where Jean graduated from high school in 1941. That fall she started classes at Kearney College. She commenced training as a nurse at the Nebraska School of Nursing, Omaha in February 1943. She married Edwin John Loeffel of Lincoln on March 10, 1945. On the completion of Dr. Loeffel’s medical training, the family settled in Mitchell, Neb. In 1970, Jean returned to nursing, earning an RN from the School of Nursing at West Nebraska School of Nursing in 1971, and her BSN from the University of Nebraska in 1975. After the death of Dr. Loeffel, she married Richard Charles Reinhardt on Oct. 10, 1975. She lived in Scottsbluff until 2010, when she moved to Hastings to be near her daughter, Susan. Jean was a compassionate and caring nurse. She rejoiced in being a mom, a stepmom, and grandmother. She was active in toastmistress and the Scottsbluff Community Theater and volunteered with Birthright and the Scottsbluff Art Council. Jean was an ingenious seamstress and particularly enjoyed crafting beautiful costumes for her children and grandchildren. She loved her Lord, and spent many hours studying the Bible. She entertained often, delighting numerous friends and all her family, for the food was superb! Birthdays and special holidays were all honored with special gifts of baked treats and homemade candies. Her artisanal sweet rolls will be remembered by all fortunate enough to have tasted them. She loved being outdoors and taking hikes and long walks. In her later years, her company was a succession of three, very lucky, poodles. Her one great frustration was never being able to overcome her fear of water and learn to swim, although she tried hard many times. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother; three sisters; and both of her husbands. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Jane & David Landen – Mebane, NC; Ed & Geraldine Loeffel – Salida, CO; Susan Loeffel – Juniata, NE; and James & Nancy Loeffel – Lincoln, NE, her grandsons Hunter Landen and Timothy Landen, her granddaughters Heidi Loeffel and Josie Strauffer, two great grandsons and two great granddaughters. She is also survived by her Second Step-Family Children and their spouses, Rick & Pam Reinhardt – Roca, NE; Doug & Mary Reinhardt – Ridgeway, CO, and Terri & Tom Furmanski – Parker, CO, four grandsons and two great granddaughters.
