Stencel, Joseph Joe, Feb. 20, 1926-Aug. 26, 2014 The Tribune Greeley, Colorado 28 Aug 2014 Age: 88 Residence: Eaton Joseph Joe Stencel passed away Aug. 26, 2014, at Life Care, Greeley. He was formerly living at The Greeley Place, Greeley. He was born Feb. 20, 1926, on a farm near Pierce, Colo., with his twin brother, Benjamin, to John and Marie (Schwab) Stencel, who immigrated in 1907 from Hussenbach, Russia of the Volga River Region. They were the eighth and ninth children of the family and were the youngest. Joe married Evelyn M. Lohr in Greeley, on Feb. 10, 1946, and they had four children. They were married for 65 years when Evelyn passed away on Aug. 19, 2011. Joe attended schools in the Pierce and Galeton areas. He and Evelyn farmed in the areas surrounding Greeley from 1946-1970, when they moved to Eaton. He continued working in the agriculture industry, retiring from the Road & Bridge Department of Weld County in 1990. Joe was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Eaton since 1970. He was a 4-H leader for eight years and coached many of his childrens 4-H basketball, volleyball and softball teams. He was an enthusiastic spectator and supporter of all his grandchildrens and great-grandchildrens school and summer activities. The most cherished memories of his grandchildren are seeing Grandpa and Grandma cheering them on at all of their activities and the many summer camping trips eating fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy after a day of fishing with Grandpa. He enjoyed watching the Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies and especially the Eaton Reds teams. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Weld County, and enjoyed bowling and playing pool with his many friends at the Greeley Senior Center. After retiring, Joe was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and travelled to many of the world tournaments, where he placed in the top 10 several times. He was inducted into the Colorado Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame in 2003. He also won several medals participating in the Senior Olympics. Joe is survived by his sons, Terry (Dana) Stencel, Greeley, and Steve (Kelly) Stencel, Loveland; daughters, Cindy (Chuck) Cluster, Centennial, and Gwen (Russ) Leffler, Eaton; twin brother, Ben (Ilene) Stencel, Loveland; grandchildren, Craig Bruce, Christa Sanchez, Jennifer McCraw, Lindy Jones, Jody Schlim, Shelly Garcia, Jeromy Stencel, Sarah Zamora, Luke Leffler, Natalie Leffler, Andrew Leffler, Josh Florence and Kiele Florence; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, and his parents; brothers, Henry, John Jr., Fred, and Reuben; sisters, Irene Miller, Lydia Pappenheim and Esther Foos; and great-grandson, Antonio Zamora. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at the Allnutt Macy Chapel. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at Faith Lutheran Church in Eaton.
