Am I the last to know that Microsoft will not send updates for Windows XP after April 8, 2014? As I have complained to this list several times over the past few months, my computer crashed October 11, 2013. I really didn't know what I could or should do about it, until my son in law gave me the name and number of a computer geek, whom I called, and since I was anticipating a move to a different location, decided to wait until I was in my new apartment to have it repaired, and my files restored. This computer has been a major headache ever since, but I won't go in to it all here. To make a long story short, I paid this computer guy $90 to fix my computer. Today, I was trying to install the latest updates for my Windows XP, and received the message from Microsoft, that April 8, 2014, they will no longer send updates, and from that date forward, my computer will be vulnerable to attacks, viruses, malware, and everything computer users dread, including the fact that none of my files will be safe, including my "secure" sites, such as banking info. What did they suggest? Either move on to a newer computer, or put everything on flash drives, which I can then take with me to a different computer that doesn't use Windows XP or Vista. They said that they have offered free service and support to Windows XP users for 12 years, and it is time to move on! This really puts me in a quandary! I live on a limited income, as I'm sure many readers do, and just don't have an extra $1000 or more to buy a new computer! I'm quite upset over this. Maybe Microsoft sent out warnings while I was off line, I don't know, and maybe the rest of you already know about this, but I thought I would share this piece of news with you, just in case you haven't heard about it.
