Dear Colleagues and Fellow G-R Researchers: Just wanted you to know about a new publication that has hit bookstores and newsstands in Germany and other parts of Europe and abroad. It is a special issue of the well-known German news magazine, DER SPIEGEL. The entire issue is devoted to articles and maps and pictures dealing with "DIE DEUTSCHEN IM OSTEN" (The Germans in the East). There is a historical map on pages 16-17 that clearly shows areas of former ethnic German settlement in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and other countries in "the East." Of special interest is a beautifully-illustrated article about the Germans in Russia on pages 54-59. A few of the photos are ones I have not seen published previously. There is also a portrait gallery (pp. 138-139) that profiles several well-known German citizens who have ethnic roots "in the East." These include Bessarabian German Horst Koehler, Nobel Prize winner Reinhard Selten, and the famous movie actor Armin Mueller-Stahl. This entire issue runs 146 pages and sells for 7.50 Euro.
