Erdman-Penifold, Irene, Jan. 20, 1923- Oct. 29, 2012 Scottsbluff Star Herald Scottsbluff, Nebraska 20 Nov 2012 Irene Erdman-Penifold went to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 in Casa Grande, Ariz. following a massive stroke. A memorial service is planned for Jan. 20, 2013. Memorial donations in her honor may be made to Hospice or Community Food Bank. Irene was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Bayard, she is survived by her husband of 66 years, James H. Penifold of Coolidge, Ariz. They were married Jan. 3, 1946 in Denver. She earned her Nurse's Aide Certificate in 1978 after completing her GED Certification and worked in the healthcare field. Irene was a ray of sunshine to all who met her. Survivors include her children, James L. of Phoenix, Ariz.; Sandra Horton of Marana, Ariz.; Betty Latimer of Tampa, Fla.; John D. of Eugene, Ore.; Frederick P. of Oracle, Ariz.; and Dorene Moe of Redwood Falls, Minn., 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include a sister, Esther Williams of Sand Springs, Okla., and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Irene in death were her parents, Henry and Anna Erdman; eight brothers, and four sisters.
Helzer, Marvin LeRoy, Sept. 4, 1933- Nov. 13, 2012 Billings Gazette Billings, Montana 20 Nov 2012 KALISPELL Marvin LeRoy Helzer, 79, of Kalispell, passed away in his home on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, after a long battle with Parkinsons disease. Marvin was born on Sept. 4, 1933, in Billings. He graduated from Park City High School in 1951. As a child, his parents farmed in Harlem until 1949, then moving to Park City, to farm. He farmed with his parents until 1958. Marvin married Catherine Friedt on Nov. 14, 1953. In 1958, Marvin, Cathy and daughter Susan (1955) moved to Billings where Marvin worked for Associated Foods until 1974. Sons Gary (1959) and Steve (1963) were born in Billings. The family moved to Kalispell, in 1974 where Marvin worked for Rosauer's, Semi Tool and Northwest Precision until he retired in 1992. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and grandchildren, gardening and woodworking. Preceding him in death are his parents, Conrad and Marie Helzer, and brother Gerald Helzer. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughter, Susan Gilman (Marty); sons, Gary (Debbie) and Steve Helzer; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and brother Wilbur Helzer of Billings. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Dr. Edward Veldhuizen and Pastor Doug Rupp officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. Valerie was born Jan. 4, 1961, at Scottsbluff, the daughter of Harvey Gene and Shirley Jane Kerbel of Morrill. Valerie was the one in the middle of an older sister and younger brother. Valerie went to school at Morrill Public Schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in the class of 1979. In the fall she went to Chadron State College in Chadron, graduating from there with a double major in Business and Home Economics in 1983. While attending college Valerie worked at the cafeteria food service. After graduation from Chadron she had a position of assistant manager in Marshall, Mo., later taking a position of manager at Midland, Texas. She made a move joining her sister at Thornton, Colo. In 1988, they both moved to Greeley, Colo., where she worked at the University of Northern Colorado and Aims Community College in business areas of employment. Later Valerie started her own business designing and sewing custom western showman shirts for clients, along with supporting Laura Lee as they developed an Alpaca herd and grooming dogs. Valerie was a happy cheerful, caring person helping others along life's way. Valerie's great enjoyment was time spent with family, caring for people along the life's way, cooking for family, helping people, sewing projects, animals, flowers, arts, crafts, drawing, and listening to Christian and Country music. She will be remembered and greatly missed by her sister, Laura Lee; brother, Scott David; mother, Shirley Jane Kerbel; uncles and aunts, Roderick and Connie Hort and cousins in their family, Ernest Eugene and Carol Hort and cousins in their family, Larry and Carol Kerbel and cousins in their family; Don and Becky Kerbel and cousins in their family; close friend, Beverly Martin of Greeley, Colo.; and other friends made during the years and newly acquired cocker spaniel, Zeva. Krug, Richard Lynn "Butch", Nov. 8, 1948- Nov. 13, 2012 Scottsbluff Star Herald Scottsbluff, Nebraska 17 Nov 2012 TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Richard ""Butch"" Lynn Krug, 64, a native of Torrington passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 in Denver. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with Reverend Steven Seng officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Legion Post #5 baseball program in Torrington. Richard was born Nov. 8, 1948 at the West Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Scottsbluff, to Walter and Artyce (Rutter) Krug and was the youngest of three sons. He grew up in Goshen County and graduated from Torrington High School in 1967. He was an accomplished athlete, competing in baseball, basketball, and tennis. Richard won a Wyoming state championship in tennis (No. 1 singles) in 1966. He continued his education at Eastern Wyoming College where he was member of the college's first intercollegiate basketball team in 1968. Richard received an associate's degree from EWC in 1969 and then earned a bachelor's degree from Chadron State College in 1971. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army in the fall of 1971 and served as an avionics mechanic. He was stationed in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky with the 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Brigade and served eighteen months in Vietnam. He reached the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged from the army in the fall of 1974. Richard received the national defense service medal, good conduct medal (1st award) Vietnam service medal, Vietnam campaign medal, Army commendation medal and an M-16 marksman badge. He was formerly employed at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff and for many years worked as a clinical instructor and coordinator of radiology. Known to many as ""Butch,"" he loved coaching baseball and instructed many teams at all levels from Little League to Torrington's American Legion Post #5 team. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and hunting, and was a member of the American Legion. Richard married Judith Cecil of Huntley, Wyo., June 1, 1974 and to this union was born two sons, Daniel and Mark. They later divorced. He married Felecia Juarez of Torrington On Oct. 28, 2000 in Las Vegas, Nev. and to this union was born a son and a daughter, Matthew and Jessica. Survivors include his children; wife; brothers, Toby of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Ken of Rapid City, S.D.; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother Artyce, April 12, 2012; and his father Walter, Sept. 1, 1977.

Ernst, August (Gus), Nov. 22, 1926-Nov. 12, 2012 The Tribune Greeley, Colorado 16 Nov 2012 Residence: Greeley August (Gus) Ernst, 85, of Greeley, died Nov. 12, 2012, at Grace Pointe Assisted Living in Greeley. He was born Nov. 22, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo., to August and Viola (Hoelscher) Ernst. Gus attended UNC earning his degree in education and masters degree in math. He spent his college summers in Glen Haven, Colo., helping his uncle and aunts at their store. During these summers he hiked the surrounding mountains and climbed to the top of Longs Peak. After graduating college he taught in Julesburg. While there he met Betty Fitch. They were married May 29, 1949. They moved to St. Louis, where Gus began his long career in education. He was a high school principal for Bayless School System for 29 years. He retired and moved to Greeley in 1981. He worked in the Greeley School System for two years and then became the senior coordinator for the city of Evans for eight years. After his full retirement, Gus and Betty enjoyed camping, gardening and their family. Gus is survived by his wife, Betty of Milliken; daughters, Leanne Lederer and husband, Don of OFallon, Mo., and Jennifer Ernst of Milliken; sons, Ronald Ernst and wife, Cookie of Olathe, Kan., and Steven Ernst of Loveland; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhea Ernst. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at St. Johns United Church of Christ. Lydia was born May 5, 1917, to Jacob and Katherine Kaiser in Loveland, Colo. On April 1, 1937, Lydia married Byron Dale Freauff in Fort Collins, Colo. They moved to Wiggins, where they farmed for 15 years. In 1978, they moved back to the Greeley area and farmed until retirement. Lydia is survived by two grandsons, Jay D. Glenn and Justin Glenn and wife, Lori; great-granddaughter, Jordyn, all of Roggen. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Marilyn; three sisters; and six brothers. Weber, Florence, August 25, 1922- Nov. 10, 2012 Scottsbluff Star Herald Scottsbluff, Nebraska 14 Nov 2012 Florence Weber, 90, of Scottsbluff, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Federated Church in Mitchell with Dr. Charles Richardson officiating. The daughter of Conrad and Mollie Libsack, Florence was born in Minatare on August 25, 1922, and lived all but three years in this valley, where she raised her family. In 1941, she married Henry Heilbrun Jr. and moved to Kent, Washington. After two years they returned to the family and valley they loved and missed. Florence was married to Harry Weber in 1964 and enjoyed life on the farm until retiring and moving to town in 1983. Growing up on a farm as the oldest of six children brought many responsibilities early in her life. Those years were challenging, yet the source of great memories. Recalling those memories with her brothers was a favorite pastime and always led to peals of laughter. Florence was a talented seamstress and cook. She loved to travel and was as comfortable at her quilting frame as she was at a black jack table. She loved waltzes, bull-riding, and cheered for the Rockies. She delighted everyone with her wonderful sense of humor. There were few days we didn't hear her laughter. She loved the changing seasons and watching the fields from planting through harvest. Florence's enduring faith supported her through life's many challenges and was a continuing source of comfort and peace in her later years. Romer, Betty Lee (Hoffman), Sept. 11, 1933- Nov. 5, 2012 The Coloradoan Fort Collins, Colorado 13 Nov 2012 Betty Lee (Hoffman) Romer, 79, peacefully passed away on Nov. 5, 2012 surrounded by her loved ones after recently being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Born to Samuel and Irma Hoffman on Sept. 11, 1933 in Fort Collins, Colo., where she was raised and graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1951. She worked part-time jobs to support herself and her children. She started working full-time at Colorado State University. She worked for the Housing Department and was the secretary for Pingree Park. She retired in May of 1997 after 30 years of service. She continued to work at CSU for an additional 10 years part-time. Finally deciding to retire for good, she kept busy going fishing, camping, working in her yard, spending time with her friends, traveling, and being with her family. She never met a stranger and loved talking to them. She loved babies, little children and animals. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always made us laugh. She leaves behind her son, Kevin Romer and his wife, Jana and grandchildren; Kacey, Zackery and Lyndsey; daughter, Kelly Meyer and her husband, Marvin, grandchildren, Sarah and Wade all of Fort Collins; son, Rodney Romer, and his wife, Hollie of Cheyenne, Wyo. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Willbanks; nephew, Rick Willbanks; and nieces, Sherrie Johnson, Melody Eustrom and their families. Special friends, Judy, Terry and Doris, and her most precious love, her little dog Abby, a gift from her son, Randy. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Randy Romer; and brother-in-law, William Willbanks. Mom has reunited with those that have gone before her and we can be assured that she is being taken care of. Life will not be the same without her and she will be so deeply missed. She was taken from our lives much too soon. Our family would like to thank the numerous nurses, respiratory therapists, Oncology staff and doctors at MCR and PVH that took such loving care of our mother and grandmother during her short stay. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Timberline Church, South Auditorium, 2908 S. Timberline Road. Private burial at a later date. In 1997, they retired and moved to Torrington. Martha loved to garden and can her produce. She was famous for her pickles. Martha was a good wife, mother and homemaker. She helped raise her grandson Thaddeus and she was especially close to her twin sister Marie. She was a member of the First Congregational Church. Little, 91, of Scottsbluff, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Scottsbluff. Upon graduation from business school she went to work and Panhandle Co-Op. On April 6, 1946, Elsie married Donald Little in Scottsbluff. To this union their children Dennis Little and Sharon (Little) Rahmig were born. Elsie quit working until the children were of school age. She then returned to work starting at Resler Trucking, then moved to Prucka Transportation, Western Nebraska Express (WNX), Dr. Ted Riddell, Dr. Allan Landers and Lockwood Corporation. After her husband Donald passed suddenly on April 1, 1969, Elsie went to work at Woodmen Accident and Life as a sales representative. She was a member of the Life Underwriters and Life Underwriters Training Council for 25 years, when she finally decided to retire. After retiring Elsie wanted to stay involved with people so she sold Avon for a little while and started volunteering at the Panhandle Co-Op/ Main Street Market gathering food for shut- ins. Elsie was well known for her homemade pies and brought smiles to anyone who received one. She also loved gardening, working in her flower gardens, having coffee with the girls, and spending her spare time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she adored. She is survived by her son Dennis Little of Minatare, her daughter Sharon (Little) and Dick Rahmig of Gering: her grandchildren Dana (Little) Miller and her fiancée Aric Hubbard of Morrill, Chad Rahmig and fiancée Dianna Propp of Gering, Stephanie (Rahmig) and Marvin Lockman of Rapid City, S.D., and Robert and Amber (DeWitt) Rahmig of Gering. She is also survived by great-grandchildren R.J. She was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Bogue, Kan., to William and Gertrude (Burns) Serena. She moved to Colorado at the age of 7 and attended school in Franktown and Elizabeth, Colo., before moving to Deer Trail, Colo., in 1936, where she graduated from high school in 1946. Mary went on to receive her teaching certificate and taught at rural schools for three years. On June 13, 1949, she married Milton Reifschneider at St. Pauls Congregational Church in Greeley. They were married for 60 years. Mary worked in Greeley at Rays Locker Plant and Consumer Oil Co. She started working for Greeley-Evans School District 6 Food Service in 1966, at Greeley Central High School, where she was employed for 31 years before retiring in 1997. After retirement, Mary and Milton moved to Loveland, to be closer to family. She loved cooking and baking for her family, especially krautburgers, turtles and cinnamon chews. She enjoyed the outdoors, baseball, flowers and gardening. Her family was everything to her and she loved all of them. Mary is survived by her sons, Steve Reifschneider and his wife Kim of Castle Rock, and Stan Reifschneider and his wife Renee of Loveland; five grandchildren, Tiffany Reifschneider-Smith and husband Mark Smith of Fort Collins, Taylor Reifschneider of Castle Rock, Seth, Nicolas and Mitchell Reifschneider, all of Loveland; sister-in-law, Mary Allmer of Greeley; and numerous family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; parents; and brother, Charles Serena. Viewing will be from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, followed by funeral service at 10 a.m., at Adamson Chapel. Interment will be at Linn Grove Cemetery. Kathy Ann Helzer 57 passed away at home on November 2, 2012. She was born in Greeley, Colorado, to Ben and Aubrey Helzer. Kathy loved her cats; they were her pride and joy. She also, had a pet rabbit and frog that she had names for both of them. Kathy and Randy fed the squirrels and birds every day. She would sit in the house and watch the birds and squirrels eat. Kathy is survived by Randy Shockley. They had been together 24 years. Also, her dad, Ben; sister, Lynette (Floyd); and brothers, Doug of Fort Collins, Colorado, Lenny ( Mary) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Randy's sister, Cheryl Alps (Gary and son, Cody) of Yoder, Wyoming; Jody Severs (niece) of Loveland, Colorado; 2 nieces, Cristie and Aubrey; 2 nephews, Arron and Adam; and numerous aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother, Aubrey and one son, Sonny. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins, Colorado. Has a church book ever been found? My relative was Jacob Ruf and Ranemus Ruf coming from what country in 1774. My grandfather as Jacob Ruf, born in Dittel in 1873. My grandmother was Catherine Balzer, born in Stephan Colony in 1874. Previous relative known then in 1800s was Jacob Ruf and Sopie Flohr. Then Jacob Ruf and Christina Ellenberger born 1833 and 1834. My grandparents were married in Stephan 9-12-1893. Thanks very much, Helen Ruf Hadley. I am trying to locate country of origin.
