Hello My name is Tom Fabo and I'm seeking for ancestors who lived in the german colonies of russia exactly in Basel. Hope that sombody can give me access to the missing data of the ancestors. The following information is the only one I got by now: Johannes Horn * April 12, 1920 in Basel Father: Alexander Horn *1889 Mother: Katharina Horn nee. Kaufmann *1891 both parent died in 1940 (execution?) Grandfather: Alexander Horn Grandmother: Katharina Horn nee. Geier Johannes Horn was teacher before he was drafted to the russian army. Thanks in advance Tom
Hi Tom. Here is some information that may be of help---some of it you may already know. I'm not at all an expert on Basel, but since there doesn't seem to be a village coordinator for Basel I'd thought I'd see what I could find for you. Saratov Archive has Basel church records of births 1861-1874, 1891-1917; marriages 1864-1867, 1877-1915; and deaths 1892-1917. Engels Archive has Basel's church records which are included under the Barataevskoye (Bettinger) parish records. Births 1780, 1792-1796, 1798-1799, 1804-1815, 1806-1833; marriages 1831-1861. Reportedly Engels Archive also has a Basel Census for 1850 and some sort of village roster or family list for 1866. Brent Mai at Concordia University has the Basel Census for 1857 [alternatively LDS Film #2373695 in Russian]. AHSGR has the Basel Census for 1798 and 1834. Of course they also have for sale Dr. Pleve's 1768 First Settlers Lists, 1766 Kuhlberg Ship Lists, and Volga Transport Lists. AHSGR Village Files for Basel includes a hand drawn map of village Basel and description of which families lived in the village and on which streets. You might also be interested in AHSGR Journal, Vol. 18, No. 2 (Summer, 1995) for the article "A Journey to Our Ancestral Village, Basel on the Volga," by Edythe F. Robinson. Bill Pickelhaupt mentioned the Memorial website which is a great idea. Try looking in Russian for your surnames of interest and also try Basel or whatever name was used circa 1940: _http://www.memorial.krsk.ru/eng/index.htm_ (http://www.memorial.krsk.ru/eng/index.htm) Finally, here is a link to a couple of photos of Basel: _http://wolgadeutsche.net/kakorin/_Basel.htm_ (http://wolgadeutsche.net/kakorin/_Basel.htm) Good luck with your research! You may be able to find out more about Johannes parents at the website of the organization Memorial. You can do a search by first letter of the surname. The website is in Russian. The birth and marriage records will be with one of the archives along the Volga - Engels, Saratov or Volgograd. Bill P. Is there a drawing or picture of the time of1800s of this church that anyone could email me. My paternal grandmother, Catherine Elizabeth (Balzer) Ruf, was born, and married in Stephan's in 1893. I am a new member too,Ken, and have the genealogy bug! I would greatly appreciate any help on this. Thank you all. I have learned so much so far about my four grandparents from the Volga German villages. This is a great organization! Helen Ruf Hadley
Hello Ken! Welcome to the list! Glad yet another person has shown their interest in genealogy! If your ancestors were from Frank, Russia then I suggest contacting Maggie Hein, the Frank village coordiantor, who supervisors the data accumulated for this settlement. There are more village coordinators and I am sure Maggie will let you know all the details about the others. And if you are interested in the more recent history of Frank, you can ask me. I spent part of my childhood up until the late 1990s there. Could someone tell me if there are any German-heritage stores in the Dakotas or in areas where Volga Germans have settled in great numbers like in Nebraska? There is still a store like this in Calgary called Edelweiss Imports. From what I recall a family from the Odessa area owns the business at 1921 - 20th Ave. NW - www.edelweissimports.com Anyway a German from Russia Christmas is highlighted by German food, customs and goodies at this time of the year. The Bauernkalender (farmer's calendar) for 2013 is very nice and at $19.95 cheaper than ordering it directly from Germany. It has lots of warm folksy story-book scenes from the Romantic period and just perhaps German-speaking and other lands in Europe are going through a 19th century romantic and Biedermeier revival. I have been in recent contact with Bern Deichmann (he used to work for Schulerich - the bell and chime company) who is on the board of the German-American Heritage Foundation and recently stepped down from his position as the president after serving for 10 years. The GAHF would like to "connect" with GR organizations wherever they are located. Horst Gutsche
Hello and a blessed Advent to all! Pastor Enzo Pellini of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Kitchener, Ontario, has sent me a German-language Advent calendar. If you would like a copy sent by email, please send me a note at hwg1923@hotmail.com Horst Gutsche

Does any one know the situation on doing research on those who went through Buedingen on their way to Russia in 1766? I have heard conflicting things.
