    1. [GV] 38th Annual Symposium of The Society for German-American Studies
    2. Horst Gutsche
    3. I thought that I would make you aware of this. It will be interesting for those who live near Milwaukee. Horst We missed you in New Orleans. Make plans now for 2014. The thirty-eighth annual symposium of the Society for German-American Studies will be held in Milwaukee from April 10th to 13th, 2014. As with New Orleans, the meeting will mark the first time the Society has met in the host city, and the first time in a long time that we’ve met in Wisconsin. A block of rooms has already been reserved at the Hampton Inn Downtown. Mark your calendar. Additional details will appear here as they become available. Annual Meeting and Symposium German Milwaukee Milwaukee’s first German settlers arrived in 1839, just four years after the region’s first public land sale. By 1860, they formed a majority of the city’s population, and Milwaukee became the most German large city west of Berlin. Although they lived in all sections of town, the immigrants’ particular stronghold was the area west of the Milwaukee River. North Third Street was their “downtown,” and some merchants reportedly put signs in their windows to reassure non-Germans that they could find “English Spoken Here.” The German community’s key quality was its internal diversity. The newcomers ranged across a broad spectrum of economic, religious, and political backgrounds. Perhaps the most colorful sub-group was the Forty-Eighters, who had fled the homeland after a failed revolt against royal rule in 1848. Well-educated, idealistic, and decidedly liberal, the Forty-Eighters organized musical societies, arts and theater groups, Turner clubs, and other cultural institutions that made Milwaukee the “German Athens of America.” The Germans maintained their distance from the dominant Yankees at first, but in time they exercised a dominance of their own in culture, politics, and industry. The roster of Milwaukee’s leading employers was filled with Teutonic names: Harnischfeger, Falk, and Heil in manufacturing; Pfister, Vogel, and Gallun in tanning; and Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller in brewing. It was the prevalence of German-owned breweries that made Milwaukee the “beer capital of the world.” The wave of anti-German hysteria that crested during World War I nearly washed away the German cultural establishment, and the slow process of assimilation moved the community still further from its roots, but its Germanic heritage continues to shape Milwaukee’s character. In 2000, nearly thirty-eight percent of the population of Milwaukee claimed at least some German ancestry—still the highest proportion in urban America.

    1. [GV] Fw: Caucasus Church Records Posted by Maggie Hein; Omsk Area Census Records
    2. David Schmidt
    3. Maggie Hein posted the following message about online church records from the Caucasus (see below). My comments: Maggie, those records are amazing and thanks for posting them. What I especially appreciate is that you actually posted links, thus enabling fellow researchers to quickly check out the records and use them in their research. Too often in the past, records have been mentioned without adequate links or information, thus teasing and frustrating researchers. Thanks for showing the right way to do it! In glancing quickly through the 1879 and 1885 records, I noticed reference to colonists from Riebensdorf and some Bergseite villages. I didn't see any references to Wiesenseite villages. Time permitting, I hope to continue looking through the records to see if I can find some Wiesenseite villages mentioned. Will try to jot down the names of the villages I see and report them to the group on this list. I suggest that others do the same, so we can start to get an idea of the number of Volga colonists who relocated to the Caucasus and the villages from which they came. As many Volga researchers probably are aware, Volga colonists in the 1890s relocated to the Omsk area of Siberia and founded daughter colonies there. By going to familysearch.org and searching the Catalog under "Places," entering "Russia," and then clicking on "Russia - Census- 1897," I previously have located 1897 census records for Tobolsk guberniya, the province where Omsk appears to have been located. However, I have been unable so far to tell whether the records cover the daughter colonies founded by Volga emigrants. My reason for mentioning this is to alert other researchers to this possibility, with the hope that someone else may be able to locate the pertinent census records for the Omsk-area colonies and post the film numbers or links here. David F. Schmidt VC for Boaro, Caesarsfeld & Stahl am Karaman Email: schmidtdavidf@yahoo.com A Village of Frank descendant that I was recently helping alerted me to the fact that he had found numerous settlers from Frank in the Lutheran Church records of Taganrog for the years 1879-1885.  Taganrog is on the Sea of Azov, near Rostov-on-Don.  The fact that Frank people had immigrated to this area was somewhat of a surprise to me.  We had some indications on Pleve charts that Frank people had immigrated to "The Caucasus" and one chart indicates that a family had immigrated to the "Stavropol Region", but I had no exact locations or any idea if any records existed.  The 1879-1885 church records have been posted on the internet here:  https://disk.yandex.com/public/?hash=IEZ3T4hQDvJDWhSEtCxl8l2voD1LR4ir4qca4J5BaoE%3D&locale=ru I have looked through a few pages of the 1879 and 1885 records and have found numerous Walter and Frank people.  The entries clearly indicate the village of origin for the colonists.  Some further searching, with a lot of help from Bill Doos, yielded the following LDS film collection: Metrical books, 1834-1885 Authors: Evangelical Lutheran Church. Taganrog (Rostov-na-Donu) (Main Author)  Format: Manuscript/Manuscript on Film  Language: German  Publication: Salt Lake City, Utah : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1993  Physical: on 30 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.  https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/1408144?availability=Family%20History%20Library I would need to get the 1879-1885 films to know for certain, but I believe based on the number of pages listed that these are the same records that are posted on the web site mentioned above.  My takeaway from this is (1) there is a lot of stuff out there on the internet that we just don't know about and (2) there is a lot of stuff in the LDS microfilm collection that we just don't know about.  Maggie Hein Village of Frank David F. 3. A possible reprint of the book "the "Settlement of immigrants of German Origin in southern Alberta from the 1980's to the 1910's"‏ Manfred Prokop (mprokop@ualberta.ca) Add to contacts 12:21 PM From: Manfred Prokop (mprokop@ualberta.ca) Sent: January-30-14 12:21:06 PM To: Manfred.Prokop@ualberta.ca Dear all (this is the last time you will hear from me about the “Germans” in Alberta; I am sure you are sick of hearing about ye olde Germans in ye olde Alberta J), I have now had not only about 25 expressions of interest in a reprint of the volume on the settlement of immigrants of German origin in NORTHERN Alberta, I have also received a number of queries whether the compendium volume on SOUTHERN Alberta (2011) could also be reprinted. So here I go again, testing the waters. Please keep in mind that I am doing this as a public/professional service to persons interested in German-Albertan history; I am not making any money here. I checked with my printer, and she tells me that the per-volume price for a minimum of 25 copies would be $30. For a minimum of 40 copies printed the price would drop to $25, for a minimum of 5o copies the price would be $23. It also has a CD with the names of immigrants of German origin taken from the Canadian censuses between 1881 and 1911. It has about 70 pages more thahn the other book, i.e., ca. 300 pages. Postage would be a bit higher, I would guess ca. $14 per volume, including the mailer etc., for Alberta. So, please let me know if you or your friends or family would like to order a copy/copies of the SOUTHERN ALBERTA volume by MARCH 15. When I have a chance to review my records after returning to Okotoks I’ll send out an e-mail to anyone I might have missed with this mail. At the end of March I will notify all those who have expressed a “pre-order” interest how many copies have been ordered and whether or not the SOUTHERN ALBERTA volume will be reprinted. Very best wishes, Manfred Prokop

It is likely that this was arranged through letters carried back and forth from Russia and Germany. http://www.volgagermans.net/norka/norka_organs.html Steve Schreiber

    3. Works by Lorraine Dreger Yackulic Lorraine Dreger Yackulic, of her own inspiration and with her husband George at her side supporting her all the way has another very particular genius using her innumerable gifts for the production of three volumes (two of which have already been printed and are still available for purchase with only a couple of dozen left) on the German-speaking immigrant history in the province of Alberta. 1. 1. “Step Back in Time! - Volume I - Northern Alberta - An Historical Travel Guide for Albertans of German Heritage” - 2012 - 525 pages in a large format; with numerous excellent photographs and tables etc - ISBN 978 0 9880119 0 8 - It covers everything north or (and including) White Whale Lake, Stony Plain, Edmonton/Strathcona and Beaver Lake to the border with the Northwest Territories. This book is excellent for taking trips to historical sites both of German and other heritage (from the time of the native peoples and trappers) throughout Alberta. German family names are listed for each community except, of course, for large cities. This is the only tour guide solely for people of German heritage, who wish to seek out their ancestral roots within the province of Alberta. The book documents the German heritage footprint in Alberta. With this guide you will be able to trace the path of your German ancestors throughout the North West Territories and into the Province of Alberta (founded in 1905) in its first years of existence. The guide will assist people in researching their German family heritage in our province, will be helpful for those wishing to tour Alberta’s historical (and current) German settlement areas. This book is available from Mrs. Yackulic by phoning 780 973 5036 or emailing lyackulic@shaw.ca - The book is $70.00 plus shipping costs. 2. Step Back in Time! Volume II - Central Alberta - An Historical Travel Guide for Albertans of German Heritage by Lorraine Dreger Yackulic - 2013 - 414 pages in a large format - ISBN 978 0 9880119 1 5 - with numerous excellent photographs and tables covers the area directly south of (but not including) White Whale Lake, Stony Plain, and Edmonton/Strathcona, Beaver Lake down to just north of Calgary in a straight line from the British Columbia to Saskatchewan border. It is in all aspects just as valuable as a guide and for research just as the above Volume I is for Northern Alberta and includes a DVD entitled “The Stalwart Peasants in Sheepskin Coats (from Galicia, Poland and Volhynia). This DVD has the title sections: Founding Families of Alberta Chronicles of Germans from Galicia, Poland and Volhynia 1885 - August 31, 1905 - Tillers and Builders First Families of Alberta - Chronicles of Germans from Galicia, Poland and Volhynia September 1, 1905 - 1915 - The table of contents lists: Prologue: Introduction, Table of Contents; Setting the Scene: Historical Background & Extensive Timeline (Timeline - a printed copy in Volume I. DVD copy enclosed for Volumes II & III); Travel: Long Ago Trailways, Waterways and Railways; Place Names: German Place Names, German Settlements, German Trailblazers, Heritage Data, Tourist Information; Addenda: Miscellaneous Items of Interest; Bibliography: Colour-coded List of Resources; Directory: Sample of 411 German names; Index: Cross-references to Sections; Publications: Current Works in Progress - Plus: Historical Postcards, Current Photographs, Maps, Poems, Trivia, and much, much more! This book is also available from Mrs. Yackulic by phoning 780 973 5036 or emailing lyackulic@shaw.ca - The book is $70.00 plus shipping costs. I am of the firm conviction that such volumes on other provinces and states would be of great benefit in emphasizing German heritage sites and settlements and would encourage people to cherish their roots. The Lord created each one of us as we are and this is part of keeping the fourth commandment. “You shall honor your father and your mother that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” What does this mean? “We should fear and love God that we do not despise nor anger our parents or superiors; but we should honor, serve, and obey them, and give them love and respect.” - Horst Gutsche
